Okay, I'm a huge 80's fan and interested in the fashion of the 80's era (yes, this includes the early 90's, 90-93). I always thought that 1988 was the year that hair was biggest. Am I wrong? But I've also heard on this board that hair was biggest in 1984, is this true? I like learning about 80's fashion, but hair is my biggest interest.

Or, was hair the biggest in the early 90's?

I'm young and didn't grow up at the time, so please enlighten me.

Definitely not 1984. I say 1988 had the biggest hair from my memories.

It was the biggest from 1987 - 1989, maybe 1990 too. But 1988 I think it was at its peak.

The hair styles go in and out.  Right now I would say Amy Winehouse is the big hair girl.  As a fad I think the late 80's glam rockers would have it.

The Ronettes had 'tall' hair. And whilst it was big, it was neat - unlike the 80s big which was a permed mess.  :)

But on a serious note, what exactly is 80s hair?  It really cannot be pinpointed to one year in the 80s because in some form or another, lots of bands/singers rocked that look all through the 80s

At the peak of Van Halen's popularity in 1984, David Lee Roth had big hair.  Late 80s "All sounding the same" metal bands like Poison and Warrant all had big hair.  The cross-dressing singers like Boy George, Marilyn and Pete Burns (Dead or Alive) all wore big hair in the early - mid 80s.  In the early 80s, members of rock groups like REO Speedwagon had big hair

At the peak of Van Halen's popularity in 1984, David Lee Roth had big hair.  Late 80s "All sounding the same" metal bands like Poison and Warrant all had big hair.

But I really do think hair was the biggest in 1988. The whole big hair thing for everyone started around, 1983 I'd say. As the 80's went on, more people had it and it got more elaborate. 1988 I think it was at its peak. Or maybe if you go by school years which can sometimes be easier when it comes to pop culture, the 1987 - 1988 school year. I think in 1986 is when everyone's hair looked like a perm mess and it completely dominated culture. I don't remember much of big hair, if any in 1993 at all. There was big hair, but it was a big difference from the 80's big hair.

I really am not too smart on the 80's, since I was only a child during that span. But I remember things dating back to 1982 or 1983.

I also have had many looks at my oldest sister's high school yearbooks, she started high school in 1983 and graduated in 1987. I looked at her freshman 1983 - 1984 yearbook. In the homecoming/prom queen sections, along with princesses, honorable mentions, and nominees. All of these girls though have big hair. But looking at the senior photos, not everyone has it yet, just some girls, and not too many guys. So I'd say it started around that time - 1983 and worked its way up.

My oldest brother however, started high school in 1986 and graduated in 1990. All 4 of his years were totally big-haired. His sophomore 1987 - 1988 yearbook has some rockin' hair. Looking at the senior photos, there is a lot of it, but the photos were taken in summer of 1987 I think. I remember ten years later I had my senior photo taken in summer of 1997 so I'm sure it wasn't any different. In the other pictures, which in fact were taken sometime in 1988. (We used to have the candid yearbook photos during the mid-point of the school year) the hair is pretty big too.

His Junior yearbook, 1988 - 1989 have the senior photos taken in 1988, and I think they win the award for biggest hair.
