Subject: the 80's: sleazy?

Written By: Ryan112390 on 05/26/09 at 3:28 pm

I've noticied that in a lot of 80s movies, photos, etc, there's a very sleazy sort of feeel. I don't know how to describe it, but a certain gritty, sleazy atmosphere in the early-mid 80s.

I agree, there's some movies with an almost ahem ahem, pornographic feel to it. And plus, the way girls dressed in the 80's was sorta sleazy, like you said.

If you watch some of the Friday The 13th films, there's that atmosphere to it sometimes. But then again, there's sex scenes in almost every Friday the 13th film! LMAO.

Not any sleazier than the 70's.    Can't get much sleazier than 70's exploitation films.

You have kind of a point there. The 80's, in a way, were very sleazy. Overindulgence, the fast and quick wealth of the drug trade, mostly run by criminals and lowlife.
Its just that in the 80's, sleaze dressed in Armani suits, and Docksiders sans socks. Sleaze dressed better, or at least knew what to wear. But anyway you cut it sleaze is sleaze, no matter how its dressed.

Especially the Miami Vice "look". The more this style of dress turned up, the more it seemed like more of a update of '70's disco wear for the 80's.

No where more than the video game Grand Theft Auto Vice City did they capitalize on the theme of the sleazy 80's.  The clothing set the stage...

One of the most revealing lessons of youth was when dishonest people switched from "friends you don't need," according to one's parents to, "people you need to be on the good side of..."

The difference, apparently, is that the sleazy person happens to sign one's paycheck...

You definitely saw a lot of black fishnet stockings and red high heels in 80s movies. Women definitely had the trashy look with their spiky jet black hair and bright red lipstick. Sorta like a toned down Elvira.  :D

The hair metal scene, Prince, Madonna, Samantha Fox, 2 Live Crew...

Though some are tame by today's standards

I blame bands like Vanity 6 Apollonia 6/Mary Jane Girls. And Madonna. They made that whole underwear as outerwear thing a huge trend.

Ironically, I like the music from all of them...and I know damn well if this was 1985, I'd be a mini-Vanity. Though I CAN sing and act.  :)
