Subject: Anyone remember these 80s hits?

Written By: whistledog on 06/12/09 at 2:11 am

In my ongoing chart musings, I have collected this list over the years:  Artists who are NOT from Canada, but had popular hits in Canada that didn't chart in the USA or the UK.  To put my mind at ease, does anyone remember any of these songs?  I know some of them were hits in other countries overseas

Cutting Crew - Everything But My Pride
In Canada, you don't need to be in the Top 40 to be on the radio.  Oh I remember this song very well!

Mostly only ones I knew were with an obvious Aussie connection...

Mental As Anything, Tim Finn, Billy Thorpe......I also know the Hall and Oates tune as well as 10CC's song.

Me neither. I am familiar with some of the artists, but not the songs. :-\\

I know the Pete Shelley song and recognize a few other artists, but not the songs. :P

I'd probably know more of them if I actually lived in Canada in the 80s :D

Ah! Hold on...this seems familiar! (Though not in this version!)

In the hands of the St. Winifred's School Choir, this became the #1 record in Britain over the Christmas of 1980!

The sentimental value was obvious, but there are some people who say it shouldn't have been a chart-topper (something to do with the way the chart returns were calculated over that holiday period) and that the recently-murdered John Lennon should have claimed it with 'Happy Xmas (War Is Over)'

I knew alot of these wouldn't be recognizable ;D

In all honesty, there are a few of these I don't even remember, just wondered if anyone did LOL
There's about two dozen more Top 40s I could have put in here that were minor hits in the USA (and some in the UK as well), but I stuck with the uncharted ones just to see what kind of response I'd get :D

The song in general is somewhat odd to be a chart hit, let alone a #1 single, but stranger things did happen in the charts during the 80s.  The Chicken Song was a UK #1; The always dreadful Surfin' Bird became a Canadian Top 40 hit for Pee Wee Herman and the Chicago Bears took their Super Bowl win into the US chart ;D ;D

Most of the artist names are familiar but the songs are not.

"Jon and Vangelis - The Friends of Mr. Cairo" is the only one I heard before.
A good obscure one from the '80s.
And I do believe its melody was used in the 1987 movie "The Untouchables".

Out of the rest, these (to me) are the best...

Joan Jett and the Blackhearts - The French Song
The A's - A Woman's Got the Power
Lords of the New Church - Open Your Eyes

One might expect this was a hit in his homeland Holland - but no. It never even made bubbling under section.
Wouldn't be surprised if it was a hit in Germany, though.

Tim Finn - Through the Years
I know this one was a smash in Australia

Ah yes, I remember this one. The follow up to "Fraction Too Much Friction" (a #2 hit in Holland). Sadly, this didn't fare as well and only made #34 in our Top 40.

Yeah. I remember Pete Shelley's Homosapien and LOTNC's Open your eyes. I've always liked those songs. How about Combo Audio - Romanticide or The Plimsouls - A Million Miles Away? Great songs too.
