Subject: Roller derby

I heard it's coming back...

What were the pop culture references?  American Gladiators?

Seems in the 80s I saw a derby movie or show that was like the “ultimate rink.” It had ramps like some kind of twisted Matchbox like track, roller gals were constantly flying over rails, special effects type studio lighting and thrills and spills not for the faint of heart.

Ring any bells?

I remember two movies in the 70's...both movies had bodies flying over barriers etc while competing while skating...

Roller Ball ...with James Caan
Kansas City Bomber ...with Raquel Welch

I remember back in the early to mid 90s, there was a show called "Blade Warriors". It was an "American Gadiators"-style game show, where the contestants had to participate in various physical challenges while on in-line skates.

I found a clip of it:

I remember Blade Warriors.  I loved that show!

Probably the best seen of Roller Derby in the 80s was the show RollerGames that ran for 1 season (1989-1990).  It featured contestants on roller skates competing in a roller derby.  It was popular enough to launch a soundtrack, a Pinbball machine as well as a video game for the NES, which still ranks to me among the 5 greatest games for the NES.
