OVERplayed.  OVERhyped.  OVERrequested.  OVERrated.  As I've stated before on this board, when I held a 5-year 80s night DJ residency a few years back, I did everything from breaking CDs to giving them away so people could listen to the freakin' song in their car to running a scam with my ex-wife to give me a large sum of money not to play it on those nights.  I think I averaged playing it once every 6 months, and it probably got played maybe 2 or three times on the 6 years of Retro Dance Party.    8-P

I didn't mind the track much myself, but (at least in North America) it was overplayed.  The first wave of 'retro' as a cultural fad took place in the mid-90s, and it was played at least once every night at every such club.  Unlike something like Tainted Love, it's just not danceable enough to tolerate that sort of abuse :)

Yup. C'Mon Eileen is not quiet a danceable song. Tainted love is a better dance song.  Yes, I do remember it was overplayed as well, but I still like it. Lots of good danceable songs from the early's 80s when New Wave was starting out. Some unknown ones were really quite good. Don't know if you remember a song by Visage called, I think it was called "fade to grey". Nice dance song.

I will forever associate 'Come On Eileen' with dodgy British nightclubs.  You know the sort - where the ratio of male to female is about 100/1, and where one hundred pissed chavs have scared the last remaining females off the dance floor by linking arms with each other, sloshing copious amounts of Carlsberg beer all over the place in time to their over-aggressive high kicking in the process.

Tainted love is a better dance song.

Well....that depends on which version you hear.  The original version of 'Tainted Love' is obviously a classic, but sometime in the late 1980's/early 90's Marc Almond re-recorded a new version and video for release on his 'Soft Cell/Memorabillia Greatest Hits' album, and it's not a patch on the original IMHO; It's weak, lacks cutting edge and is just boring. Sadly, this version is the one that is used on VH1 now.

Love Visage.  However, I wouldn't say that 'Fade To Grey' is very danceable....I've seen people contort their bodies into positions I never thought possible whilst dancing to this!  :o

Final point to note was that I think the diversity of the early 80's was never better demonstrated by 'Fade To Grey' and 'Come On Eileen', which represented complete opposite ends of the spectrum.

If you mix Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" with Visage's "Frequency 7", it becomes more dance-able :D

A-ha was good and has much better songs than "Take On Me" but thats a good choice!!!!
When I was a kid I had Lionel Ritchie's "Can't Slow Down" on cassette and listened to it all the time!!! I loved that album.
Fast Times At Ridgemont High is a "cool" soundtrack and yes, Jackson Browne's song rocks!!
