Wow.

"In today's world, your inalienable rights are consumer credit, unlimited telecom and personal security. In your home, in your place of work, you can count on Security Systems. Security Systems... wherever you go, there we are."

"Credit fraud... that's worse than murder."

"An off switch..." / "She'll get years for that."

"Have you any idea how successful censorship is on TV?  Don't know the answer?  Hmm.  Successful, isn't it?"

Even blipverts are real now.  The technology of Data Rescan was used in the movie Contact back in the 90s so that a computer-generated President Clinton could perform a speaking part in a movie without having the real President have to do it.  The Chinese are widely suspected of using their prisons as Body Banks for organ harvesting, and how can you have a war without good ratings?  That's on top of the episodes around extreme fighting sports, Captain Midnight's zipping of HBO, and the subsequent zipping of WGN-TV in 1987 (and the Blank who did it in 1987 got away with it), the perils of electronic voting, computer viruses, hacking-for-profit, identity theft, and Blanks (aka Anonymous).  In short, Max Headroom predicted almost every technology-driven sociopolitical change that has happened in the 25 years since the show's release.

There are reasons why a show that was 20 minutes into the future took 25 years to be released on DVD.  Perhaps it's appropriate that the first serious look at the show's promise came in the form of an essay written more than 20 years ago.

When this comes out, I not only owe someone a box set, but I owe them a beer.  I never thought it would ever be released in any form other than the .torrents that have floated around the 'net, and placed my bets accordingly.  I've never been so glad to be wrong.

And all this time I thought Max Headroom was just a glorified Coke commercial...

Bravo.  I'm still reading the essay...

I forgot one!

Max Headroom: Lessons.  (Specifically, "During a raid of a nearby home, a Metrocop arrested a man for showing pirated educational programs to children.")

In 1987, that was prespammersitely dystopian.  In 1997, it was a realistic enough prospect that the founder of the Free Software Foundation could write science fiction to illustrate the point, and have it published in a reputable academic journal.  By 2007 (OK, 2008), it was in the Boston Globe.

If you watch no other series, watch Max Headroom.  The original episodes could air today, and while a child of the 90s or 00s might laugh at the bulky video cameras, they'd probably recognize just about every issue raised as something current.
