Subject: Muscle shirts

Written By: Ryan112390 on 06/29/10 at 1:48 pm

Were Muscle shirts (aka sleeveless circle neck T-shirts, not wife beater t-shirts) popular in the 80s?

I mean like this:

There were big my neck of the woods. When I was about 9 or 10, it seemed most guys had 'em. I had two myself, but usually wore an unbuttoned short sleeve shirt over them to express my version of "cool".  :D At school, were allowed to wear them without another shirt over them. Silly.

Nowadays they do too often call it a "wifebeater."  I think this is owing to the popularity of the "Cops" shows over the past 20 years and the fact that a high preponderance of men busted for battering their wives/girlfriends were arrested wearing the attire you might call a "muscle shirt."

This is an unfortunate moniker because they're quite comfortable.

Now shut up biotch and fix me my turkey pot pie!

However, I must admit that it was a surprise when the dude was wearing any shirt of any kind.  An undershirt?  You, sir, are gentleman and a scholar!

One time the dude had the standard issue "wifebeater" on, but nothing else, just the "wifebeater"!  "Cops," television's voice for the working class!

Fixed that for you.

(I don't wear a wifebeater while drinking beer and watching COPS, because that's just asking Father Darwin for trouble.)

I don't drink at home.  When I do, I get extremely negative when I'm alone.  I'll watch TV and say crap like, "Shoot him, and the rest of the crooks on Capitol Hill.  It's a totally negative experience for me!

But that's only if I belt back Jim Beam shots one after another!

I just find it funny, that 8 out of 10, criminals on the show, are intoxicated and wear muscle shirts.

;D

They usually wear no shirt at all and live in trailers.  So many of those episodes were filmed down South in the sticks where the Mobile home is a dominant structure! Usually they guy emerges with no shirt hollering about his wife being psycho and it's all her fault!

And sometimes they don't even wear pants.

So I suppose this mousepad should probably stay home, then, but at least it explains why I watch COPS when there aren't any riots going on :)

You could simply argue, "But I'm not one of those men."  The rest of the guys in the forced labor camp yard will get a kick out of that.

Do you want to set the world on fire,or do you simply want to watch it burn?  Passivity concerns me less than malice!
:o

My own P.O.V. is that the world is burning and you and I are watching it.  It's just not quite what we envisaged in the Cold War.

And that's just it.  You start a thread on muscle shirts and by the end of the page, we're destroying the planet.  This is kind of Al Bundy level irony!

Strip-mining's not that clean an industry, but ever since Chernobyl nuked the idea of a carbon-free stopgap, the end's probably going to be more oily than irony.

If I had the power to make it burn, I'd also have the power to try and make it better.  But given the track record of people who end up with that kind of power (100,000,000 dead in the 20th century alone), I'm content to just watch it burn rather than to try and do something about it.  At least when it goes it won't be my fault, and if we muddle through, the future'll be pretty cool.

Yeah, it's kinda why (in all seriousness) I miss the Cold War.  You'd live a perfectly good life, and then the way the morning broke would be Quite Unusual...

To stick with nukes but (since Belgian dudes in suits don't count), to get us back onto American dudes in muscle shirts, I'll play the Def Leppard card: "It's better to burn out / than fade away".

No Comment/Official Version, Front 242's peak period!
http://www.inthe00s.com/smile/15/thumbsup.gif

100,000,000 dead and yet world population quadrupled in the 20th century!

Multi-millions still unfed...

We are not immune to a Malthusian catastrophe!

Am I supposed to say something about muscle shirts?
