Subject: Were remixes invented in the 80s?

Written By: youngerderek on 04/19/11 at 8:14 pm

The '80s, particulary, New Wave songs, seem to be the first songs that are remixed. Were there any remixes from the '70s or earlier?

Maybe.
Here's a Madonna's remix album from 1987.

Actually sometime in the early '60s, maybe even earlier. But by the mid-70s as disco boomed, remixing became important as I see the '70s, not the '80s as when remixes came of age (but they did continue to grow more popular in the '80s and '90s). Certain 12" singles as a result are collector's items nowadays.

A Billboard article from 1964 states that producer Burt Bacharach was to "do maybe 24 takes in the studio, listen to the playbacks, remix and listen to the acetates".

Initially, remixing was likely used to simply get the best quality cut before providing "alternative versions", which is probably what the original poster was referring to. These were initially referred to as "special remixes", first often for a single version as opposed to an album version, this began sometime in the late '60s.

I can see by the mid 70's the disco and funk era had loads of remixes.
