Subject: Help finding a song from 1982!

Written By: 80sfan on 06/09/11 at 6:39 pm

The lyrics go...

'Don't stop, don't you know, I'll never let you go, no no....'

All I know is the song is from 1982. I love the song, please help.

Yazoo: Don't Go

Thank you so much! I've been trying to find this song for the past 5 years or so. I liked it the first time I heard it!

The music aged better than that video!

All Yazoo is great...but their ouevre is small.  Two LP's and a few singles in their brief career (1981-1983).  They were marketed as "Yaz" in North America in deference to a U.S. group already using the name "Yazoo."  I recommend both "Upstairs at Eric's" and "You and Me Both."  They're worth hearing as albums from start to finish.  The remixes from the eighties are pretty good.  The compilations released in 1999 and 2008 add only a few worthwhile tracks previously rare in the U.S. and Canada:  The songs "The Other Side of Love"* and "Tuesday," and "Only You (1999 Version)"  The House music DJ remixes of Yazoo's work throw lackluster 4/4 beats over otherwise great dance pop.  It's hard to improve on perfection, but the 1999 version of "Only You" comes close; it amplifies the melody with sweet electronic orchestra sounds.

That would explain why I hear 2 different names for the band. Yaz and Yazoo.  ::)

Yaz sadly never had a Top 40 hit in the US.  They did have two chart enteries in Billboard but Don't Go was not one of them.  Both Only You and Situation fell outsode of the Top 40.  Here in the Greath White North, Yaz were one hit wonders with Situation which was a Top 40 hit.

I thought their best track was Nobody's Diary from their 1983 album 'You and Me Both'

Oddly enough, the most successful Yaz track was not one performed by Yaz.  The British acapella group The Flying Pickets did a cover of Only You in 1983 that topped the UK chart for 5 consecutive weeks, and even became a Top 20 hit in Canada.  It was completely ignored in the US, which I always found strange.  When good music goes unnoticed ...

True... although in the Netherlands it was a different song by a different artist that topped the charts for 5 consecutive weeks... ::)

Here's the original Yaz/Yazoo version:

And this is what Dutch singer René Klijn made of it:

FYI: he's lying on a couch because he's dying of AIDS. He died on September 5, 1993, just three days before his 31st birthday, and shortly after this performance.

Yaz is the name given in the US for the British group Yazoo.

There was already a US-based group known as Yazoo apparently.  Though I don't recall any songs by them

A lot of people made that mistake.  Alison Moyet is a big lady with a big contralto voice.  Yazoo was big on the U.S. dance charts.  Even funk stations played them.  However, they didn't get the same kind of press bigger Top 40 acts got.  They didn't print pictures of themselves on the record jackets and they credited themselves simply as:

Vocals: Moyet
Noises: Clarke

So they were kind of an enigma.  Some people even thought they were Black!

No offense to overweight people (I'm overweight myself), but if the singer lost like 80 pounds she'll be a lot prettier! She's actually kinda pretty.

Yes.  However, they're universally Yazoo since their reunion in 2008.

It almost sounds like "Wazoo" if they had put a W next to their name.  :D

Clarke named his band after Yazoo Records (an American roots music label), which was named after the Yazoo River in Mississippi, which, in turn, comes from the now extinct Yazoo tribe that lived in the area when Europeans arrived.  I don't know the etymology of the word itself.  Clarke wanted to combine a roots blues sound with a high-tech synth-pop sound.  That's how Alison Moyet found him.  Clarke advertised for a "rootsy blues singer" for his band.  However, Moyet didn't want to stay in a synthesizer band despite the phenomenal success of Yazoo, so the band was finished after barely two years.  Moyet has a successful career as a soul singer (not so much roots blues).  Clarke started another synth pop duo with singer Andy Bell called Erasure in 1985, and the rest is history!

I love Alison Moyet, especially the hits from her 1984 album "Alf": All Cried Out, Love Resurrection and Invisible.
