The 'Times Square' soundtrack was excellent, and what many do not know was it produced 3 hit singles:  'Same Old Scene' by Roxy Music, 'Rock Hard' by Suzi Quatro and 'Help Me' by Robin Gibb and Marcy Levy.  The former two were debatable, but they were released as singles after the film was released.

I've been trying to track this little obscurity now for at least five years.

What's the early 80s synthesizer track being played behind these samples of Bush I?  The track with the Bush samples dates back to 1990 - and judging from how the music and the Bush samples are synchronized, the producers of the Bush speech sampled the same track.  Con$olidated sampled the campaign ad in 1991, which is why the music is lined up with Bush's words, and skips around forward/back as they sample from different parts of the speech.

But I'm actually looking for the original track.  I know I heard it on the radio at least once, some around 1983/4, so it has to be older than that.

The original had freaky loopy little bits of Morse code sound effects in it and everything, and was an excellent example of early electronic/new age/space music.  Might have even been some harpsichordish and/or flute-like effects in there, sorta like a cross between Mannheim Steamroller's Fresh Aire stuff and Vangelis.  Unfortunately, because the track was an instrumental, there's no easy way to google for it, and the Con$olidated samples are very short and don't give music recognition samples much to work with.  Con$olidated didn't know who sampled it, because they were sampling a Bush campaign ad, and I doubt that anyone behind the campaign ad has ever cared whose music they use as a backdrop.

Yep, that's the Consolidated album that sampled it.  I'm after the "it".  Don't feel bad, I know damn well how obscure this is - I only heard it once - and had convinced myself I'd never hear it again until I heard Consolidated sampling a campaign video that sampled it.

I have the "Times Square" soundtrack.  It also has a great early Cure track on it, "Grinding Halt."  The Sleaze Sisters performances are awesome too.
BTW, the "Paper Chase" was intended for the "Countercultural Films" thread.  I corrected the error!

Again, restricted to 1977-1982 releases:

Front 242: Operating Tracks (1982)

US JCGE 7" featured b-side Torah! Torah! Torah!  Any Second Now (Voices) was essentially the same instrumental on
the Speak & Spell LP.  The UK CD of Speak & Spell includes a bonus version of ASK(V) with lyrics, which is the first DM track
with Martin Gore singing.

Always loved this scene in the movie "Risky business" - The song is "Love on a real train" by Tangerine Dream

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dk30-AtiB4M&feature=related

TD did a marvelous job with that soundtrack.  There music makes the atmosphere of the movie.  I prefer the titles:
"No Future Get Off the Babysitter" and "Guido the Killer Pimp"!

A new version of "No Future" appears on TD's 1984 album "Exit" as the title cut:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AK9zKafP-TA

S'more:

Donna Summer/Giorgio Moroder: I Feel Love (1977)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06a_Xi1AU9s

Giorgio Moroder: Chase (Theme from Midnight Express) (1978)

Richard Pinhas: Rhizosphere Seqent/Towards Belfast (1977)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NW9sX1LGXA&playnext=1&list=PL9660D3F6FF6DFE7E
Mistakenly credited with earlier release dates, these were both released on the 1977 album Rhizosphere.

Brian Eno: By This River (1977)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SrZYP8SzlN8
Co-written by Roedlius and Moebius (aka. Cluster)

Cluster: Manchmal (1979)

Silicon Teens: Chip 'N' Roll (1979)

B-side of Judy in Disguise.  Chip is one of a few originals Daniel Miller wrote under the name
Silicon Teens.

"Enjoy the Silence" is the masterpiece fashioned from ten years of great synthesizer song-writing practice by Depeche Mode -- who would go on to disappoint me with dreary crap such as "Condemnation" and "Precious" -- and/but/though -- btw, there's nothing wrong with skanky beards and white guitars, but that's what ZZ Top is for!

When did he break away from Kajagoogoo? ???

It was after Too Shy was released in 1985 I think and Limahl didn't break away from Kajagoogoo.  Acording to him the rest of the band fired him because they felt that he was holding them back from being taken seriously as musicians.  I think that was a crap way to go because after they fired Limahl they never had another number 1 again.
Did anyone see the Kajagoogo Bands Reunited show?

"Too Shy" was 1983.  I still love that song.  Kajagoogoo rivaled Duran Duran as bubblegum celebs for about four months in 1983.  Nick Rhodes produced the album "White Feathers," which seems to be its secret ingredient.  The band was driving at a quirky sophisti-pop style, and they did some interesting work with the Chapman Stick, but it all came out kind of half-baked.  I think Limahl was right.  I liked his "Don't Suppose" album WAY better than Kaja's "Islands," and "Crazy People's Right To Speak" was so bad I couldn't sit through it!  Nick Beggs is still a good guitarist.  I think he serves himself better a session man with other folks in the driver's seat.

For me, the best Kajagoogoo album was 'Islands', which was the first one without Limahl that had those awesome songs Big Apple and The Lion's Mouth.  Though Limahl's Don't Suppose album was the best of them all.

When it comes to Limahl as a solo act, I thought his best was the 1985 track Love in Your Eyes from his follow-up album Colour All My Days that sadly went nowhere.  The single though did reach #80 in the UK, and is a really great new wave ballad.

That's What I Get for letting myself grow old without noticing.

Here's another from 22 years ago: Clock DVA, The Hacker, ca. 1988, with video produced a year or so later (probably on an Amiga from the looks of it):

ENISCG2a15g

(Warning: Not Safe For Epileptics)

The dedication to "Karl Koch aka;Hagbard Celine Hacked 23/5/89 Aged 23" is a reference to Karl Koch, the black-hat hacker tracked down by white-hat hacker Cliff Stoll in The Cuckoo's Egg and the NOVA documentary The KGB, the Computer and Me.

The ironic bit is that Cliff Stoll had no idea that the guy he was tracking down was working for the KGB; he was just curious as to who the other hacker was.  And Koch had no idea that it was 9 seconds of CPU time, valued at $0.75, that prompted Stoll to wonder "hey, who was that guy, and what was he up to?"  The US bureaucracy was uninterested, and it was only through Stoll's inisitently-diligent badgering that there really was more to the story than met the eye, that Koch was finally caught.

I believe one of the first ones I can recall is Gary Numan's song "Cars" which was in 1979 or 1980. Although I wasn't a fan of that one, I enjoyed the synthesizer genre all through the 80s.
