Subject: I can feel St. Elmo's Fire burning in me!

Written By: wsmith4 on 07/07/11 at 12:20 pm

Who else just simply loves and adores this movie to pieces??

To me, it epitomizes what the 80's was all about.  It also gives me a "cozy" feeling when I watch it, like the kind of movie you'd love to fall asleep while watching.  I love the music, the characters, the stars, the scenery.  EVERYTHING.  One of the best 80's movies.

It reminds me of all the swell "problems" I could have had if only I'd made it to prep school and on to Georgetown!

I liked this movie.  It also had a very good soundtrack.

The famous track 'St. Elmo's Fire (Man in Motion)' by John Parr was originally written by David Foster as a tribute to Canadian paralympian Rick Hansen, who at the time was on his 'Man in Motion' tour across Canada to raise money for Cancer research.

The initial release of the music video for Canadian audiences incorporated images of Hansen, but that version has appeared to have been long since deleted.  Finding it is like trying to find the humour in a Woody Allen film lol

“I do my best thinking on the bus.”

There's a lattice over cosmic coincidences over everything...

Anyway, I feel the same way about The Big Chill as I do St. Elmo's Fire, but The Big Chill is precious to baby-boomers.
"Hey, man, it's a movie about us; our generation."

Yeah, it's always about you and yer goddam generation:  Woodstock, The Beatles, Civil Rights, the Vietnam War, good pot, Whole Earth, Maoist collectives, sexual liberation, Human Growth Potential, wheat germ and yeast, home computing, open marriages, and I heard it through the grapevine.  It's all about the Boomers and ain't we all swell.  So of course you hadda reach into 1982 for one more campy flick about you and your generation.  Couldn't shut up about yourselves for more 'n about ten minutes anyway!
(Nothing personal, just how I saw it as a disaffected Gen-X kid!)

I didn't see it when it came out, but that "St. Elmo's Fire (Man In Motion)" song got a lot of play on the radio in Aug.&Sep.1985.

I enjoyed the movie and the songs as well. Very "80s". Rob Lowe was a stud back then.

Much like 'The Breakfast Club', this was one of those movies that didn't quite translate to British audiences...

They both worked well in Canada. (We are America junior. ;D)

There is only 1 thing wrong with that picture. Elmo isn't IN the fire. ;)

What didn't translate about the Breakfast Club?  Themes seemed relatively universal to Western adolescence.  I guess the vernacular was too American.

Not sure why they never really gripped the British imagination whereas a lot of other 80s flicks went TransAtlantic...perhaps they were too 'American' in their aspect, but I don't think that was the exclusive reason...

It wasn't through lack of effort either, as I quite vividly remember both films getting a fair amount of promotion here...

Apart from 'Man in Motion' by John Parr and 'Love Theme ...' by David Foster, the soundtrack had a 3rd hit in Canada with 'If I Turn You Away' by Vikki Moss.

"Man in Motion" summons St. Elmo's Fire, the atmospheric phenomenon, as an inspiring image.

St. Elmo's Fire in the movie refers to St. Emo's Bar and Restaurant in Georgetown (well la-di-da!) where the gang used to gather.

We used to hang out at the Friendly's.  If they made a move about us, they'd call it...Friendly Fire?

I still think it's one of the better films that represents the 80s, along with the breakfast club, and other Molly Ringwald films. 80s kids doin their thing.
