???
Ya mean BIG HAIR like this:

A typical look for girls in my high school, who I noted looked like Pete Burns of Dead Or Alive:

Though the girls were more likely to be fans of Poison:
http://www.hhhsclassof1990.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/poison.jpg

As the layered, feathered, and other styles of the 1970s subsided a "teased" style was among the emergent 1980s hairstyles for women, which became know as "big hair."  I contend "big hair" was biggest in the suburbs of Boston, but girls from the Jersey Shore tell a taller tale!  Big hair got big starting in about 1982 and bigger until reaching its biggest 1988.  That's how I remember it.

Of course, teased hair was nothing new in the 1980s.  Teased has been a hairstyle among both men and women through the ages.

Here is Louis XIV in 1701:

Yeah, I noticed when I look at pictures in the 80s and early 90s, the hair from '87 and '88 are the biggest!

Nothing really is completely new, we've been repackaging and recycling fashion for centuries, I always knew the '80s was heavily inspired by that time period(the 1980s that is).

Yeah, the early 80's. Probably around 1982-83. Though even in the 70s there was some, but I tend to think of the earliest eighties as mostly lacking the real poofy stuff.

a better question might be when it ended. i would say it peaked in 1987-88 based on the films/TV/yearbooks I've seen but probably didn't completely die until 1993/94 when the 'Rachel' haircut and similar styles really overtook. definitely even in 1989 though it was starting to become uncool to a lot of people despite being present/common throughout the early 1/3 of the 90s.

Teased hair was big(no pun intended) in the 50s and early 60s

Ronettes sometime around the early 60s.

The feathered look was trendy in the late seventies thanks to Farrah Fawcett (R.I.P.)

I wonder why that hairstyle was not popular after 1984? Most of the late 80s hairstyles look atrocious in comparison to the early 80s ones.

Yeah.  They used leave in conditioners, sprays, gels, all kinds of stuff to get that look.

It was hell on girls with curly hair trying to get the Farrah look.  In a double bluff, my sister used the hair-curling iron to straighten her hair in a vain (pun intended) attempt to look like Charlie's Angels.  Then she used to douse it in hairspray!  It was a singe and a lacquer!

"Babe..." her boyfriend cooed,
"Babe...your hair feels like...like WIRE!"
:P

But this is about eighties hair.  Don't forget your crimpers:

I think it was at its peak in the late 80's. I think it mostly ended around 1995, but you still saw it here and there.

Hasn't that '70s/early '80s feathered look kind of come back, the last few years? It's not as big looking, though.
