Subject: Obscure 80s songs

Written By: whistledog on 07/26/11 at 12:05 am

A few years ago, I found a cassette at a thrift shop called Ransom Note by an Australian group called Dear Enemy.  It piqued my curiosity, so I got it, and found this track called Computer One that seems to have been a BIG hit in Australia in 1983.  I still love it!

I'm always looking for obscure 80's songs, especially from '79 to '84.

Found an old new wave song - Onyx - "Call of the Wild". I love the synth and atmosphere, it's VERY early 80's...

I downloaded the mp3 here. It's going straight into my 1982 folder!  :)

Obscure '80s songs? -- this thread should be interesting.

Here's an obscure one, and it's one of the best instrumentals to come out of the '80s, too...

Tis correct.  'Got to Be Certain' was her 3rd single.  It was not a hit at all in North America, but Europe and Australia ate it up.

Written By: Foo Bar on 07/29/11 at 10:52 pm

Here's an obscure one.  Sorry it doesn't have much in the way of video.  But if it did, I probably wouldn't want to post it.

A brief history of 40s jazz in Europe:

2u3ucVDdyyM

Robert Palmer and Lisa Dalbello, "Rules Are Made To Be Broken", from Hugh Marsh's 1988 release Shaking the Pumpkin.

Partial lyrics follow.  When I'm more sober I'll do a full transcription of the passage from the book in the lyrics thread.

In this so-called jazz type repertoire, preference is to be given to compositions in a major key and to lyrics expressing joy in life arather than Jewishly gloomy lyrics; as to tempo, preference is also to be given to brisk compositions over slow ones; however, the pace must not exceed a certain degree of allegro commensurate with the Aryan sense of discipline and moderation. On no account will Negroid excesses in tempo be tolerated.

So-called jazz compositions may contain at most ten percent syncopoation; the remainder must consist of a natural legato movement devoid of the  hysterical rhythmic reverses characteristic of the music of the barbarian races and conducive to dark instincts alien to the German people.  Strictly prohibited is the use of instruments alien to the German spirit, as well as all mutes which turn the noble sound of wind and brass instruments into a Jewish-Freemasonic yowl.

Also prohibited are so-called drum breaks longer than half a bar in four-quarter beat (except in stylized military marches); the double bass must be played solely with the bow in so-called jazz compositoins; if a pizzicato effect is absolutely desirable for the character of the composition, strict care must be taken lest the string be allowed to patter on the fingerboard which is henceforth strictly forbidden.

( Musicians are likewise forbidden to make vocal improvisations. ) All light orchestras and dance bands are advised to restrict the use of saxophones and substitute for them a suitable folk instrument.

The text is from a passage comparing WW2-era Nazi guidelines on pop music with early Soviet guidelines, as documented in Josef Skvorecky's 1967 book The Bass Saxophone.  Skvorecky spent WW2 as a slave laborer in a Nazi aircraft factory, presumably for breaking one or more the above rules (or any one of the millions of unwritten ones of the era), hence the title of the Hugh Marsh tribute.

Skvorecky bailed on Czechoslovakia in 1968 (First the Nazis, then the Russians.  The dude just couldn't catch a break when it came to totalitarians) by high-tailing it to Canada, where he published banned Czech literature and wrote for Voice of America in the 70s-90s, and by 1988, snippets from his 1967 memoirs became the inspiration for Hugh Marsh's "Rules Were Made To Be Broken", as shown above.

After the implosion of the USSR, Skvorecky rounded out his career by being awared with the Order of the White Lion from a 1990 post-liberation Czechoslovakia, was made a member of the Order of Canada 1992, became a Fellow of the Guggenheim, and the French appointed him to the Order of Arts and Letters in '96.  Not a bad set of gigs if you can get it.  But the decades of prep-work were a bitch.

The unwritten rules of this thread say that the songs are obscure, and not everybody's supposed to get the reference.

So here's to you, Josef.  And here's to jazz.  Rules, as you say, were made to be broken.

^ Through-composed music wasn't in the clear either, especially if it was by noisy Jew composers who smacked of the Second Viennese School.  Composers such as Gideon Klein (1919-1945).  He was director of cultural activities at Thereisenstadt, later liquidated at the Fürstengrube camp.  R.I.P. Gideon Klein.

Anyway, this thread is for obscure eighties songs.  Here's one you might not remember:

Serge Gainsbourg: Lemon Incest
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YeGkBbXdGgc

The title is a pun on "lemon zest."  A lot of folks got the idea the 56-year-old Gainsbourg was engaging in sexual congress with his 13-year-old daughter Charlotte, who sings on this record.  Rumors were unfounded.

For those who saw the 1985 film National Lampoon's European Vacation, you will recognize this awesome song (which to my knowledge was never released as a single).  For those who never saw that movie, watch it now, it's fantastic!

Network - Back in America

Network was formed by James Odom and David Peters, former members of the band Le Roux (aka Louisiana's Le Roux) whom were best remembered for the 1981 hit Nobody Said it Was Easy (Lookin' For the Lights), which in itself is somewhat obscure as it's rarely heard on the radio, despite it's #18 chart appearance in the US

"So, Foo, what was that 80s song that sounded like a bunch of Swedish yodeler-dude-cowbells and cows going MOO?  But not the one from a few years later from that band named after a flower."

8z6NGNSuKHE

That'd be The Matterhorn Project, from 1985, with Muh!, and Moophonia as the instrumental (read: without keyboard-synthesized-cows going "moo") version of the track.

Warning (?): A few frames of cartoon boobies that appear to confuse the squirrels even more than you, the viewer.

Both bands enjoyed popularity on the Boston club circuit but neither fared well nationally.  The story is all too common with Boston bands.

I loved that Ball and Pivot song when I was sixteen because it was synthy and naughty.  Today, nah, not so much!

Ball and Pivot arrived in time for Boston's short-lived music video station V66 (channel 66 on the local UHF dial, 1985-1987).  UHF was a dying frequency in the mid-eighties.  V66 just wasn't profitable.  So, after a scant two years a home shopping network bought out our local "MTV," and we helplessly mourned its demise!
:(

Here are two bands that enjoyed V66 celebrity:

Lizzy Borden and the Axes: Out of Touch (1985)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8mxhMnQFHE
As I posted in a different forum: It was an interesting phenomenon for Lizzy to get the same exposure as Madonna, she was still a coat check girl at the Metro!

Three years before their debut album, four years before "More Than Words."

I thought his first album was better, I didn't listen to this one too much but now that I am older I found
a new appreciation for this one, I still think the first one is better though.

I liekd his first one better as well.  It featured guest guitar from the late great Gary Moore.  If I remember, several members of Toto also appeared on it.

Here's one from 1982 called 'One World' by Utopia.  It's not to say that Todd Rundgren is obscure, but despite failing to reach the US Hot 100, this song peaked at #34 in Canada.

Utopia - One World (1982)

Remember Nazareth?  Did you know they had hits in the 80s?  Not many people do, mainly because they did not do well in the States.

In 1980, from their album Malice in Wonderland, they released the single Holiday, which peaked at #87 in the US (making it their 2nd chart single in the US Hot 100) and #21 in Canada (making it their 4th chart single, 3rd Top 40 hit in the Canadian Top 100)

Nazareth - Holiday (1980)

From the 1982 Nazareth album 2XS, the single Love Leads to Madness failed to chart in the US Hot 100 completely, but did reach #44 in Canada.  I still hear this one on the radio all the time

looks like i'm late to the pile-on: howard, i love you, but this song's about as obscure as "stairway to heaven." i literally think i spent about five years of the 80s with this song in my head, which was four more than i wanted.

there was something super-clever about it, though, the phone number just got stuck in your head. and i think it was a bit controversial because even back in those days folks in music and movies were already doing the "555" thing, i assume to avoid lawsuits. i feel bad for anyone who had that phone number back in the day.

I love that song!

Northern Pikes: Things I Do for Money (1987)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TaoQh9Ak3Rc
My roommate from Edmonton said Northern Pikes were "big news" in
Canada, but they never really broke through here in the U.S.  I heard
"Things I Do for Money" on WFNX in Boston.  It's still my favorite
NP song.

They were very popular in Canada, though that being said, that song only reached #87 in Canada.

Their only chart single in the U.S. was in 1990 called She Ain't Pretty which only reached #86 on the US Hot 100.

One of my all-time favourite Obscure 80s tracks comes from a Scottish band called The Bluebells with the song 'Cath'

It originally made #62 in the UK chart in 1983, then in 1984, a re-issue made it to UK #38.  The group was better known in the UK for the Top 10 single Young at Heart and Top 20 single I'm Falling, but Cath is still my favourite

This video I always thought was strange.  Still a classic tune though.  It was her only hit, and fell way out of the Canadian Top 40, but radio ate it up.  She went on to be an actress, best remembered for her co-starring role on the 90s series 'Kung Fu: The Legend Continues'

Here's one that alot of people like to forget, it seems, though I cannot understand why.  Written as a response to Michael Jackson's 'Billie Jean', the 1983 single 'Superstar' by Lydia Murdock was a Top 40 hit in both the UK and Canada.

Here's a late 80s one from Canada called 'Angel' by Erroll Starr.  It wasn't his best or his biggest, but it was a radio favourite back in the day and won the 1989 Juno Award (our version of the Grammy) for best Soul/R&B Recording.  It is rarely heard today, but check the sweet sax solo at 2:28

From my all-time favourite Canadian album of the 80s:  A track from 1987 called Where is Love from the self-titled album by Diamond in the Rough.  This group was a one album wonder, but that album had 3 hits, this one peaking at #83.  This is one of those songs that people do not remember by it's title, but to hear it, is like "Oh yeah, I remember that song".  Though as this group never made it outside of Canada, I don't know how much airplay they would have received in the US

Oh, yeah, s/he was a pop phenomenon in the Netherlands.  Anybody who likes John Waters movies certainly knows who Divine is, but far fewer knew about his/her records.  As Howard points out, "The Name Game" was popularized by Shirley Ellis in the 1960s.  Such an awful song.  I just love the way Divine does it!

I guess Laid Back was far more popular in Europe.  In the U.S. the song "White Horse" was a big hit in 1984.  Only a small percentage of the people who recognize "White Horse" could name the artist.  The LP "Keep Smiling" sold poorly here.

That 'Suspended Animation' album of theirs was very popular in Canada (peaking at #30), despite no actual singles to chart in the mainstream.  I used to have a cassette copy before I wore it out.

I'll see your Divine and raise you this 1987 cover by Laura Branigan - her voice being utterly wasted on this bit of filler for the otherwise-decent album Touch.

Funny thing is, she still belts it out, even though she must have cringed inside when her agent said "OK, now we're gonna have you sing The Name Game".  RIP, Laura.

Disclaimer: I'm linking to that site because the only YouTube version I could find was from a cell phone audio recording at some sort of school musical thing.  As much of an insult to her talent as the track was, even I've got limits.

Oh, and Sarah Brightman?  We haven't forgotten about your past.  When I'm a billionaire, you're gonna remake Starship Trooper.  And you're gonna do it as well as Laura did The Name Game.

Now these are some excellent songs.  FM were great.  It's a shame they never had an actual chart hit in the UK.  The closest they came, though not technically FM, was lead singer Nash the Slash and his 1981 album 'Children of the Night' (which reached #61 in the UK) and for his production work on some early 80s Gary Numan albums.

Though to be technical, there was a band from the UK called FM around at the same time, and they had 5 chart hits in the UK.  'Frozen Heart' and 'Bad Luck' are good ones :)

Ah, I do like those songs too. I didn't realise there was a UK counterpart. Nash the Slash was an intriguing character. He would often wear posh suits while his head/face was bandaged over - it makes you wonder how he breathed under there, lol. Here's a song that I believe was a Dutch hit. I knew her by accident. She appeared on a Juno compilation that made it's way to a UK second-hand store. How it got there I'll never know. I bought it and it featured a track on the compilation called 'How many'. I loved it so much I found her album and bought it. Everytime I see your picture, Strength in numbers, The best is yet to come and Innocent (with an explanation), Giving away a miracle and No more words are my favourites.

It did reach the Billboard chart, but not the Hot 100.  I am unsure of it's actual position, but it was a hit in the Billboard Bubbling Under chart (a chart that chronicled hit songs that peaked between position #101 - #110)

My apologies for accidentally misleading you, Henk. This is what wiki had to say:

"Digital Emotion is a Dutch euro disco group that originally consisted of Glenn Van Der Hoff and Steve De Goede. Their most popular songs were "Get Up, Action", "The Beauty and the Beast" and "Go Go Yellow Screen" (all three were featured in episode 14 of Nu Pogodi), released in the middle of 1980s. The band has released two albums, Digital Emotion (1984) and Outside In The Dark (1985)."

Popularity doesn't necessarily make it a hit, which is why this song has it's rightful place here. You are very right about it's similarity to 'Living in video' by Trans-X. I like both songs.

I enjoy Stutter Rap though always find it a surprise to know this was a hit in Canada no matter how many times I hear the fact. It might be due to me falsely believing that 'Morris Minor and the Majors' were too British to transfer across the pond. If you take away the accents and the English 'sensibilities' the song is pretty mainstream.

Stutter Rap did better over in Australia than it did over here and in Canada hitting no 2. I reckon the interjection of the Neighbours theme tune (Australian soap opera which was absolutely massive back in the late 1980s in the UK) had something to do with it, lol.

You forgot the B-Side!

(Well you've listened to it this far but you probably won't again,
So we'll be taking even less care from now on,
The singing might go off a bit, and the words won't have to rhyme,
And there's no line here.)

QMTL1XVgtsY

Morris Minor and the Majors, 1987, Another Boring B-Side, updated (?) with a little video (??) help (???) from the Internet.

Ha ha, first time I heard the B side. The irony being it's actually a well-written funny song - funnier than I expected anyway. What seemed a bit incongruous was the video featured Holly Johnson's 'Love Train' from 1989.

Here is another UK hit that time completely forgot, to the point where I thought I imagined it ever came out at all. It's Amazulu's version of the Huey Piano Smith classic:

This song is fantastic.  Amazulu never broke BIG in the US, but Don't You Just Know It made #44 in Canada.  It is one that is largely forgotten, as their cover of 'Montego Bay' was so popular (also reaching #7 in Canada and #90 in the US).

To me, their best was this gem from 1985 ...

I like Excitable, pretty catchy and typical of Amazulu. I also recommend 'Too good to be forgotten too' which hit no 5 in the UK in 1986. An uplifting positive song.  8)

Yet again, I'm surprised Amazulu were relatively successful in Canada (no 7 for Montego Bay is better than the no 14 it got over here in the UK).

Ah yes, I remember this one though heard it about 3 years after it hit the top 10 here in 1985. It is relatively well known here in the UK.

Here's one for the Canadians...Not really sure if this one is obscure but it didn't do as great on the charts as it deserved to. A powerful song...

Hi Russ. Sorry I don't have that other song "Just One Kiss" but I do have "Wait For The Night" and here it is!

http://www.cs.mun.ca/~boliver/Dixon House - Wait For The Night.mp3

A few years ago, I was on the message board at glorydazemusic.com. I posted a request - "Hey, anyone have Dixon House 'Wait for the Night'? It's really really hard to find." Then I typed my email address. I thought, 'No one will ever respond to that... oh well.' Then I shut off the computer and went to bed.

Next day, I checked my email. Among all the spam, there it was! "Dixon House - Wait For The Night" on mp3!  :D

I guess the guy saw my request. and immediately ripped and remastered it from his own vinyl copy. 12 hours later, he sent me the mp3 and I listened to it for the first time in decades. I was amazed he did that. I still am!

Hope you and your wife enjoy it!

I have the 'Night Heat' theme one on 45.  Roy Kenner was Troiano's vocalist for many years through the 60s band Mandala, the 70s bands Bush and The James Gang and the late 70s project simply called Troiano (and the super excellent song 'We All Need Love')

I also remember Billy Newton-Davis and the others you mentioned. Billy's biggest hit was I Can't Take It from 1989, but I remember him best for the 1986 song Right Beside You

The Mighty Lemon Drops are known in the UK, but they are not what I would consider mainstream. Incidentally, I was surprised to find they formed in the town I was born (well...It's a city now) called Wolverhampton. One of their albums is called 'Young, gifted and Black Country'. The reference to The Black Country is what certain parts of The Midlands (another word for the middle of England) is called because of the British Industrial revolution in the 1800s. The black is a reference to the pollution the coal industry caused, literally covering this area of England in black soot.

Here is a couple of songs for you folks...Disco band by Scotch (a top 10 hit in Switzerland, Germany and Portugal and hit the top 20 in Sweden) and Baila Bolero by Fun Fun (which hit the top 20 in Switzerland and Netherlands and the top 30 in Germany).

Dragon was a popular band in Australia, but never broke big in the U.S.  They had a minor hit with "Rain" in 1984.  The album "Body and the Beat" showed up briefly in record stores and then disappeared.  I recorded "Rain" off the radio.  I had it on a mix tape.  The tape slipped out of my possession.  I looked for either the single or the album and never found it.  This was before the Internet, mind you.  I suppose I could have hunted it down if I searched the trade magazines and ordered it from overseas, but I didn't want it that badly.  I finally ordered the album from some online catalog in the late '90s.  Now you can see "Rain" on Youtube!

"Rumours" was an R&B hit in the U.S. without much crossover.  Re-Flex made #24 on Billboard singles chart, but the song and the band disappeared and only resurfaced as filler on Eighties Hits compilations!

Scotch?  Someone say Scotch?

N81QDkf5gN8

My 1987 anthem, Money Runner.  Somehow I thought the cover art would have been different.  But it didn't stop me from buying it.

That's a good song, Foo Bar. Yes you are right, the cover art isn't something I would expect from Scotch. Though saying that, a hospital scene wasn't what I expected from the video of 'Disco Band'. The song 'You take me up' is also great and apparently was the inspiration behind Kylie Minogue's UK hit 'Got to be certain'.

Q-TIPS - You are the life inside of me  (Early 80s)
(Lead Singer, Paul Young)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVLsA5CQLdY

Before The Q-Tips in the 1980s, Paul Young was in a short-lived group called Streetband. They had a one hit wonder with the song 'Toast' which was a top 20 hit in 1978. Of course, after The Q-Tips Paul Young could do no wrong from 1982 - 1984 but charted consistently through the 1980s and into the early 1990s. The song 'Wonderland' is a lovely song from 1986 but only just managed the Top 30 in the UK. It but should have done better:

'The Politics of Dancing' did alright over here in the UK just creeping into The Top 30. The video was pretty good too. The Politics of Dancing proved more popular in Australia and New Zealand.

Thinking about The Politics of Dancing made me think about 'Duel' by German group Propaganda. This did better and hit No 21 in the UK in 1985 but I couldn't imagine many people remembering this by name. It did very well in Italy:

As in CFNY Streetband.  I'll just leave this here.

After 1978's "Toast", the radio station's in-house band (for you young'uns going "WTF?", radio stations really used to do these sorts of things before the Clear Channel era) did Working on the Radio in 1979, and in 1980 (this is an 80s thread after all), some prog-rock dudes calling themselves "Rush" borrowed a riff and a song title (and their album's catalog number) as a tribute to the station, and the rest was pop culture history.

Big Bam Boo - Shooting From My Heart  (1989)

That group never got the recognition they deserved.  At the time, MCA Records had a misprint on the album, citing the release year as 1987 instead of 1989.  Radio stations didn't want to play what they thought was not current music, in high rotation.  Regardless, 'Shooting From My Heart' still made the Canadian Top 40.  Mostly due to CANCON qualifications though.

Thanks for this thread.  I just finally got through all of it.  I like listening to new-to-me '80s music.  These were my favorites from this thread that now get regular rotation on my '80s-only mp3 player.  The * is by those that are my favorites among those songs.  Actually, when I have the player on Shuffle, I am disappointed when it starts playing more well-known tunes.  I bought a few other songs by Martha And The Muffins off Amazon.  I already had the songs by The Spoons ("Alone Tonight" and "Romantic Traffic") and Vitamin Z.

Blue Angel--"I Had A Love"
Bram Tchaikovsky--"Stand And Deliver"
Dan Fogelberg--"The Innocent Age"
Dear Enemy--"Computer One"
Digital Emotion--"Go Go Yellow Screen"
*Digney Fignus--"The Girl With The Curious Hand"
FM (Canada)--"Dream Girl"
*Honeymoon Suite--"Burning In Love"
*Little America--"Walk On Fire"
*Martha And The Muffins--"Black Stations/White Stations"
Michael Breen--"Rain"
*Minutes From Downtown--"Wrapped In Velvet"
Novo Combo--"Too Long Gone"
Onyx--"Call Of The Wild"
Pieter Noone & Michael Brook--"Clouds"
*Scotch--"Money Runner"
Space Monkey--"Can't Stop Runnning"
Stan Meissner--"One Chance"
Stereo--"Somewhere In The Night"
Sue Saad--"Looker"
*Trans-X--"Living On Video"
Trees--"Shock Of The New"
*Twins--"Desert Place"
*Utopia--"One World"

I thought I'd contribute a few to the thread:

I have this EP Turning To Light by Industry.  I found it in a local used record store when I lived near Sacramento.  It was $2 and the cover was so retro, I had to have it.  The label on the vinyl is cool, too, with yellow background and a Kraftwerk-like illustration.  It turned out to be an excellent record and this title track is great.  Industry would have a hit called "State Of The Nation" (I didn't remember that one, but I have it now, too).  This EP sounds like a completely different band.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZzoE3CKjQY

The first time I heard this next song, I didn't like it much but, after listening to it a few times, I couldn't get enough of it.  All I know about it is what the guy who posted the video noted: the lead singer is Ron Carpenter who was once the drummer for AC/DC.  The video was filmed on the night John Lennon was shot.  There was another band called The Takeaways that was fictional for an Australian television program called Sweet And Sour (I like the title song "Sweet And Sour," too), so it makes it difficult to look up information on this band.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Y5i7uIegu0

I really like the musicianship in this song by Dropbears.  I don't know how popular they got, but they were very talented.  The bass player died of cancer a couple years ago.

A song and a video by a Hungarian band. It's very obscure, yet very famous because some scenes were used by Dire Straits in their "Money For Nothing" video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Q9RebpKfVQ

Their real name is Elso Emelet (mean First Floor in Hungarian).
btw, this videos is fan-made (the full length video is thought to be destroyed, which makes it the more obscure)

Now when I think about, those guys could've made it big... if they performed in English. ;) They do look somewhat Duran Duran-ish and the sound of their songs is typically 80's pop/rock. I also think their video looks so MTV-friendly and so 80s. No wonder Dire Straits chose it to be included in their own video. I think their video has to be one of the best 80's videos. It has all the stuff that made most 80's pop/rock videos cool: big hair, warm/vivid/soft colors, movie-like softness of the image, split screen, (fake?) keyboard, (hexagonal) drum kit, a muscle shirt and some nice sunlight. The only thing missing for it to be a perfect video is some hot girl with poofy hair. But who knows, probably the full-length video did include a girl or two? ;) I hope the full-length video survives somewhere.

Q-FEEL: Dancing in Heaven (Orbital Be-Bop) (1983)

Re-Flex: The Politics of Dancing (1983)

Timex Social Club: Rumors (1986)

I got all of these songs from '80s compilations.  I thought they were from the Living In Oblivion series, but I could only find "Politics of Dancing" so I'm not sure where I found the other two songs.  I never heard them back in the day.

My favorite song by Q-Feel is "Crosstalk":

You know you're a nerd when... you remember File 13 as much for their ode to ancient rural phone system traditions

Yeah, I remember this song...I think you're overlooking something.  Party lines (aka. "shared service lines") were common before the 1950s, as illustrated in "Radio Days."  What you've got here is a chat line," which allowed numerous people to talk at once by calling a central number.  As in your song, they were often toll call services pimping sex talk to customers.  However, I remember from personal experience, it was just a bunch of lonely guys going "hello...hello...any women out there?"  Meanwhile, you've racked up fifty bucks in per-minute charges!
:-The Telephone Call (several mixes)

Don't forget Beastie Boys "Cooky Puss" and Yazoo "Bad Connection."

Of course, Frank Zappa used a telephone call in between "Mom & Dad" and "Bow Tie Daddy" on "We're Only in it for the Money" (1968)

Here is another Party Line --

"Walking in L.A." is my favorite of theirs too. I also know "Destination Unknown", "Words" and "Mental Hopscotch." All four of those were minor hits, and I still hear them regularly on the radio.

Dif Juz was a truly experimental (and obscure) instrumental band of the mid 80’s.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUbQiUv1QHo

No Motion being the closest thing they had to a single.
Signed with 4AD they were heavily influenced by Jamaican reggae/dub scene (played back up band for Lee Scratch Perry), and were closely associated with the other more famous 4AD artist, the Cocteau Twins (shared producers and backing instrumental players).

Cool, spacey, colorful, aural stuff (for the mid 80’s anyway), closest thing I could compare them to was The Church. They were kind of like a forerunner of the "shoe-grazer" sound/scene that was to become popular later on in the late 80’s. Alas, they only really made one album and then dropped out of sight…

Siberry is pretty well established in Canada.  This one is sort of a cross between
Laurie Anderson and Julie Brown!

That was the first song I heard from Jane.  She had another one I liked more, "One more colour". I imagine it's obscure as well.

'One More Colour' reached #27 in Canada and was her only Top 40 hit.  Her albums did better than her singles, but she did have a good bunch of tunes.  I also liked 'Sail Across the Water' from 1993

Here is a bunch from 1981 ...

Wildroot Orchestra - In the Mood
Canadian band from Vancouver.  This song is not obscure, but this version is

Nils Lofgren - Night Fades Away
American singer.  This was before he replaced Steve Van Zant in the E Street Band
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96-7KzO_O2I

Stars on 45 - More Stars on 45
In the UK, this one was known as 'Stars on 45 Volume 2' by Starsound.  I don't know for other countries, but over here, the original 12" version was broken down into 2 parts.  This one was the ABBA medley.  Part 2 was a medley of songs from the 60s-70s and billed as 'More Stars on 45 II', reached #38 in Canada.  Are the Stars on 45 obscure?  No, but I mention this one because most people only know 'Medley' (the Beatles one with the super long title) or 'A Tribute to Stevie Wonder' (aka Stars on Stevie) which were the group's lone 2 Top 40 hits in the United States

I'm not sure if I want to admit I've been looking for that for 30 years. I had them confused with "Blotto", and when that went dry, I almost forgot about that track.

But Blotto's not obscure enough for this thread, and since I just came out of a thread that might as well have begun with "Meanwhile, back in India..." (man, talk about split-second precision), here's something almost as obscure:

I have a question, was some of the music from "Pretty In Pink" considered obscure that was not on the soundtrack?

I looked some of it up and it was hard to find, but alot of people have seen the movies.

For example:

Belouis Some - Round and Round - Song playing when Andy goes to Steff's party with Blaine.

Rave-ups - Positively Lost Me/Rave Up-Shut Up

I was only a 4 years old when this movie came out and didn't see it until about 1987 with my older cousins, so I'm not sure if people considered it obscure since they never reached mainstream popularity, but it seemed like they would've been so ubiquitous because of the films.  ???

In 1986 A Flock of Seagulls attempted a comeback with a straight-ahead pop album.  Guitarist Paul Reynolds, the little guy with the glasses and the most talented musician in the band, quit after "The Story of a Young Heart" (1984).  Bassist Frank Maudsley and drummer Ali Score were only involved nominally, recording in a patchwork of sessions in numerous studios.  "Dream Come True" was Mike Score's project.  He made all the decisons about what songs would stay and what songs would go.  He also did what the band had not done on the first three albums, Mike Score hired a dozen session musicians and back up singers.

I was a superfan of AFOS from (It's Not Me) Talking to "The More You Live the More You Love," and after 26 years, I still think "Dream Come True" should have been shelved.  It was not only a commercial dud, the songs were pitiful rubbish.  I listened to it three times the night I brought it home from the mall, and kept asking myself, "The label ponied up to pay for all this sh*t?"
So here are obscure songs from the post-New Wave period of a New Wave band you know well:

I have (or had--I may have gotten rid of it) Dream Come True on vinyl. I bought it sealed (some smart person decided not to open it) on eBay 10+ years ago.  Totally agree.  I was so disappointed because I couldn't get enough of their first three albums.  I couldn't believe that a band that put out three albums on which I adored every single track could put out an album where every song was terrible.  Your backstory on it, though, helps make some sense of it.

Mike Score said he didn't want the band to become the next Hawkwind, by which he meant he didn't want AFOS to get hokey with an overly familiar sci-fi image.  That was a mistake.  The thing is, a whole lot of AFOS fans, including me, liked the sci-fi scheme.  If you get in good with sci-fi guys, you've got fans forever.  The band Hawkwind has a loyal audience going on 43 years!

So AFOS writes a love and loss themed album, "Story of a Young Heart" (1984).  The first single outweighs the rest of the record for quality.  The More You Live the More You Love in all its Fairlight Computer greatness deserved to be a much bigger hit.  The rest of the album had some catchy moments, but it seemed like the hadn't figured out what they wanted their new sound to be.  It wasn't diverse, so much as jumbled.  It bounced between happy pop "Never Again (The Dancer)" and "European (I Wish I Was)," angst "Remember David" and "Suicide Day," and anger "Heart of Steel" and "The End."  The new sound hadn't gelled yet.  The album also suffered from the absence of producer Mike Howlett who worked wonders on the earlier albums.

I like to think of the original AFOS hung on for a fourth album they would have gotten their bearings.  Unfortunately, I don't think they would have made another Top 10 hit.  That's why I suggested the progressive rock direction.  In the prog rock world, you don't get rich, but your fans love you because you never make the Top 10 and if you want to do an album of atonal guitar drones and Gregorian chants, your audience grins and bears it and happily buys the next record too!

They are probably obscure everywhere in the world, with the exception of Canada.

Not bad. I'm thinking..this song belonged on the soundtrack to the film "War Games".

Leslie Hamilton - A German singer that came up with a great imo A/C track, produced by the man who produced Baccara:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oB6L7xGGno
I think she never made it big because faster tempo disco songs and new wave were all the rage in 1981 in Europe. I can see this song becoming a hit in Canada and some USA A/C stations at the time. However, back then (and to this day) artists from  Continental Europe almost never become popular in North America and the UK. ;)

Not sure if I mentioned this one before, but it's a real soothing song that I've always enjoyed!

In Holland, this one is definately not obscure, but in Canada, it's somewhat forgotten.  It came out in 1989 and is called No More Boleros by Dutch singer Gerard Joling.  It was a one hit wonder in Canada.  It failed to make the Top 40, but still managed a Top 50 placing and at the time, radio loved it.  I used to hear it all the time on my local station!

That is also a favorite of mine, especially Country Dick Montana sounding like he had been gargling razor blades when he sang it.  I just refer to it and play it a bit less because it is a but more "mature audience" then Happy Boy.

Then again, To Young To Date is also pretty raw, I remember when one of the LA radio stations would play it and there was a lot of protest over it.  But since nothing said was actually against FCC rules the protests eventually died out.

If I owned an 80's games arcade, this song would be playing in the background.

It reminds me of ripped jeans, bandanas, walkmans, headbands and aviator mirrorshades.

Also love the gang-shout chorus - "HEY! HEY! HEY! HEEEEYYY!"

I'm a bit surprised. She was Canadian-born, but I guess she wasn't quite as popular there as in the States? I just know that it became a big hit in the States. And I'm tempted to think of her as a one hit wonder.

Edit: According to Wiki, the song actually did hit the top ten in both US and Canada.

Platinum Blonde is a canadian band from Toronto consisting of British transplant Mark Holmes, Italian Stallion Sergio Galli, and Chris Steffler.  They released their major label debut 1983's Standing In The Dark which spawned the hits Standing In The Dark, It Doesn't Really Matter, and Not In Love.

Bassist Kenny MacLean joined the fold in 1985 for their album Alien Shores that spawned three more hits Somebody Somewhere, which was their lone US hit,  Crying Over You, and Situation Critical.

Mark Holmes became involved in the charity single Tears Are Not Enough for famine relief in Ethiopia.

Then there's Contact in 1987 that didn't do as well as the other two albums did and was a complete and total flop.

Them there was Yeah Yeah Yeah  in 1990 which was released under the name The Blondes and after that they broke up.

Then in 2008 there was much talk about a reunion album.  Kenny and Mark performed at Mark's Mod Club Theatre in Toronto after which Kenny died from a massive heart attack several hours after he and Mark talked about getting the band back together.  So that put any talks about getting the band back together on hold since Sergio Galli was apprehensive about getting back together with the band.

Another scotsman Rob Laidlaw replaced Kenny on the bass.  In 2010 Platinum Blonde was inducted into the Canadian Music and Broadcaster's Hall of Fame.  It was here that they announced that because of their friend that died 2 years prior that they would get back together.

Then in 2012 they released Now & Never and they've been at it ever since. In December of that year Chris Steffler had to retire from playing the drums for PB due to having very severe tinnitus, ringing, in his ears that was thought to have been caused by the noise levels of his drums.  Rob Laidlaw recommended his friend Dan Todd to fill in for Chris while he was dealing with his hearing loss.

They were a good band. I saw many bands in some clubs/venues back from 1980 to 1984. Many of them I don't recall their names. I remembered "Platinum Blonde" because they were better than most. So were "The Spoons", "Parachute Club:, "Saga" and "The Payolas".
Their first album was really good too.

Yes and they still are a great band in spite of the many lineup changes and the addition of bass player Rob Laidlaw, another Scotsman and good friend of Kenny MacLean, and drummer Dan Todd, who's holding down the sticks for Chris Steffler who has tinnitus that was thought to have been caused by the noise levels of his drums, it's pretty much the same band.
