Subject: Oh yes it's 80's night, and the feelings right...Oh what a night.

Written By: moycon on 09/12/11 at 1:59 pm

Does anyone here ever have 80's night or 80's parties?
My girlfriend and I had an 80's night a few weeks ago. We dressed 80's, and throughout the night we watched early MTV, played records, listened to 80's music, and watched Valley Girl and The Wild Life while playing games like Yahzee (Yeah not exactly an 80's game, maybe we should have played Rubix Cube)
Didn't really know any specific 80s drinks, so we drank beer and had a great time.
We took pictures and posted them on Facebook, and got a lot of responses, so this coming weekend we are going to do it again, but this time invite a few friends over.
In addition to everything I mentioned, I'm also planning on breaking out an old Atari 2600 and firing up MAME on my PC and playing 80's arcade games on my Xarcade stick.

Was just curious if anyone else has thrown an 80's party and if you have any recommendations.

What I'd like to know is how you watched early MTV.  Are you talking videos only, or do you own recordings with the VJ banter and promos..?

I purchased a bootleg set of DVDs featuring "The First 24 Hours of MTV", but alas, it's just a recording of the VH1 program of the same name which aired a few years ago.  Mostly focused on the music videos, themselves.  I wanted more Mark, Alan, J.J., Nina and Martha with interviews and stuff...ah well...

To the topic, no, never had an '80s night outside the '80s.  I don't think I could and keep a straight face...

Davester. I have PlayOn which allows me to stream videos off sites like Hulu and YouTube on my TV through the Xbox 360.
There are several YouTube channel members who's videos include MTV from the early 80's so I just subscribe to their channels and the videos show up in PlayOn.
In fact they even have the first 24 hour posted and many include the original 80's commercials.
It's an essential part of 80's night for sure! Although i never knew there were so many 80's songs I either hadn't heard or forgotten!

No I don't think I ever had an 80's night before though it would be nice in today's 2011.

I, personally, have never had an 80's party (although I'd love to.)  You have to have friends that live reasonably close to do that though.  ;D

I had a friend from another message board have 80's parties and they posted pictures.  It looked like tons of fun.

Was trivial pursuit an 80's game?  I think there are threads on this board with suggestions on how to have an 80's themed party.  I'll have to find them for you

Yes absolutely and you just reminded me, that was one of the games we played while watching the MTV and movies.
We even have the 80's edition that we got at a second hand store for like $3!!
Needless to say we were terrible at it. Since we were kids during the 80's, and hadn't a care in the world, about the only trivia we knew was from the entertainment category.

I'll try and attach some picture from this coming weekend.
Thanks for the links bookmistress4ever!

It was originally released in 1981 (it was on a quiz show the other night!)

what about 80's foods?  In the UK at least Nouvelle Cuisine became the trendy restaurant option  Or maybe a fondue?

If only you lived in Atlanta I'd say around 8:00pm.
Pittsburgh isn't too far away though, you just have to leave around 8:00am!!

Great pics.  Looks like you had a good time.  I like the comment that you grew hair into a mohawk just for the party.  ;D
