Subject: 80's fads.

Written By: moycon on 10/06/11 at 7:15 pm

We were talking a couple days ago about fads that come and go with kids.
A recent one would be Silly Bandz, those are already starting to show up 50% off or more after months of being a hot item.
We were trying to recall the fad from when we were kids.
I know denim jackets were the rage when I was in high school. You weren't cool if you didn't have a jean jacket. I had like 3 of em!
Also I seem to remember friendship bracelets. These were hand made colored string, braided into bracelets you gave away or sold.
Any other fads you can remember?

I remember wearing jelly shoes a lot when I was growing up in the 80s, mostly in the '85 to '88 time period. And yes, they were a popular fad. They came in all sorts of colors and styles. My favorite ones were pink and they were kind of glittery.

Wanted to post a picture of them but I can't find any.

Oh yeah. Swatch watches! I remember those. I never had one of my own but wanted one. My friend gave me a white one with some abstract design on it. (Seems to me red and black boxes and lines or something) Unfortunately it was broke so I just kind of kept it in a drawer till it got thrown out. I might have to hit eBay and see if they sell them on there and if they aren't a fortune to buy now.

I was in my 40' then but I remember Swatch Watches were popular with kids.  Around 1989 a lot of kids wore their Swatch turned around so the buckle side was on the top of the wrist.  There were some nice teenagers where I worked that wore their Swatch that way.  I asked one why he did that and he said he thought it looked cool like that.  And another one told me he does it because it was cool at his school to wear it like that.  That turned into a dorky trend so kids don't do that any more.

The Sony Walkman was a trend that came back, but in the form of a digital music player.

When I was 5 or 6, there were these hair barrettes that came in multiclors(pinks, purples, greens....). Each of them were shaped to spell the days of the week(Monday, Teusday,...). LOVED them growing up!

Other fads from the 80s I remember:

- Yarn Pony holders
- Novelty lunch boxes
- Jelly flats/shoes
- Sweet Secrets Lip balms
- Color tinted mirrors(My mother had one it had lights fixed on the sides that would change colors...so awesome!)

Does anyone else remember a pencil box fad?  Some of them were pretty intricate.  They used to sell these pencil boxes where you'd press a button and a compartment would pop out.  There would be compartments for an eraser, a pencil sharpener, and paper clips.  Both boys and girls would have them at my school.  They would have characters or patterns printed on the outside.

Some of the things I use to have growing up that were fads. In the '80s of course!:
