Subject: Crash of 1987, 25 years later

Written By: Foo Bar on 10/19/11 at 11:41 pm

Once upon a time, you had to wait until Friday to get the financial news, even when the markets dropped 22% on Black Monday.

W$W, Friday, Oct 23, 1987:

To put the Crash of 1987 in perspective, compare the composure of the Late Great Louis Rukeyser - on a week which opened with the Dow dropping the equivalent of 2600 points in a single day - with every night's performance by Jim Cramer.

The Crash of 1987 was twice as bad on a percentage basis as the Flash Crash of 2010, but was twice as big on a percentage basis - and happened in an age when the average investor didn't find out about it until the day after.  Imagine being this guy from 2010 attempting to report live from the pits, but facing twice the carnage.  (In defense of the 2010 pit reporter, it took the broken robots that crashed the market in 1987 a whole day to do the damage, whereas the broken robots that brought about the Flash Crash of 2010 may have only done half the damage - but they did it in five minutes.)

Wait, wasn't the crash from about September to December 2008, not 2010?

Then there was one in December of 2007 I think!

It's only been 24 years so far, and watching videos, it makes me cringe/cry about how different technology was back then (green text on computers!)

Back then we used Macintosh computers. And every kid's favorite console was a Nintendo.

In a way, we still use such products from Apple and Nintendo; it's just gotten portable, with a different name, and a console with more interactive movement.

That's the good thing everything has gotten smaller for Nintendo.
