Subject: Great Saxophone Songs of The 80's!

Written By: Doc Brown on 02/05/12 at 11:03 pm

At a friend's request, I had to launch this thread.
Over the past 20 years or so, the saxophone has tragically become a forgotten instrument on the Rock & Roll scene, despite it having been a key contributor of coolness since the genre's inception. Bands from the early 60's(ex. The Beach Boys) to as late as the mid 80's(ex. Huey Lewis & The News) often had saxophonists in their regular lineup, and rare is the song which includes a sax solo that would sound as great without it!
Therefore, to keep the sound alive, I ask all the Rock, Jazz, and New Wave fans on board to post videos/audiolinks of their favorite 80's sax-inflected songs(one by one), so we all may discuss and enjoy them in the rich harmony the grand horn provides. ;D
I'll start us off with my all-time favorite. Now Let's Jam!

I know it may be a bit "straight", but the "quiet storm, smooth jazz" music that would fit with the Weather Channel, such as David Sanborn and Kenny G. It's nice and calming if you can get past all the cliches. Clarence Clemmons "You're A Friend a Mine", his only solo hit, despite how cliche and dated it sounds, is another great guilty pleasure of mine.

That's always been my favorite kind of music.  A lot of it came from the 70s and sounded ahead of its time.  When I was a kid I never knew what it was called.  I used to call it "black space music" because it was uncluttered, the dynamics were great and I could feel and visualize the tone colors and the space between the notes.  (No I never used drugs.)  Unlike most other music which was just a wall of sound and rhythm guitars drowning out everything.

Later on I learned it was "smooth jazz" and they had a local radio station for a few years that played it exclusively.  After not too long they converted it to pop then closed up shop for good.

Good taste in music there, Wags. I bet you know how to romance a gal, this type of music certainly helps!
Anyway, here's a great love song from that era. Sadly, only Bill Withers remains with us. Saxman Grover Washington, Jr. passed away in the late 90's, and the song's composer Ralph McDonald was lost not six weeks ago. :\'(

I think Foreigner's "Urgent" is probably the best example of an '80s saxophone song.
And to add to the list both of these are from 1982.

Haircut One Hundred and some soprano sax.

Not bad on that second song, Wags, but even though it's pre-80's, I still think the best sax tune from Supertramp and John Helliwell is "The Logical Song".

OTOH, the sax on your clip reminded me of this classic!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rg9QUK7bigQ
The saxman in question here is Michael "Tunes" Antunes. Of course, with its intro, this would fit well on the Great Piano songs as well! ;D

I'm afraid given today's news, posting this is inevitable. Somehow this girl was usually surrounded by talented musicians, and the saxman heard here is no exception.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewxmv2tyeRs
Tom Scott has long been a driving force on the fusion jazz scene, and composed the famous songs "Gotcha" and "Without Us", respectively the theme songs to Starsky & Hutch and Family Ties. By the end of the 80's, he was being hired to lead the house bands on ill-fated talk shows, most notably those hosted by Pat Sajak and Chevy Chase. Fortunately, while those shows faded away, Tom's music hasn't!

Another XLNT choice. The Saxman here(and on 'Maneater' and 'Say It Isn't So', is Charles DeChant, who worked with H&O throughout the 80's, and did session work with multiple other legendary rockers. Today, he's mainly a composer and producer, but still plays.

People were foolishly blabbering about that all over Britain, apparently you couldn't be on Top Of The Pops if you were ready to pop! Here in the States, we didn't bother Beyonce about that. :D

Moving right along...
For Wags, here's another one of those smooth sax numbers that were hit it big on the soul charts. But can we expect any less from one of the greatest Motown voices ever?

The opening sax bit in that song is based on 'Tears of a Clown' by the one and only subject of that ABC song:  Smokey Robinson

Yeah and then he and Whitney Houston tied the knot and that's when all of the trouble started for both of them.

XLNT choices Tam, the one in the middle definitely falls into the blues/jazz/soul-of-the-80's subgenre that Wags was talking about, and I enjoy as well.

While you say 'a little bit', on the other end of the spectrum, I found two that are practically covered with sax!

I'm surprised that nobody mentioned INXS and Kirk Pengilly who is perhaps one of the best sax players on the planet.  My only complaint about INXS is that they shouldn't have tried to replace Michael.  There's no way that JD Fortune could ever be as good as Michael Hutchence.

Your Pal,
Doc

8)

The saxophone made a mini-comeback last year, appearing in enormously popular songs by Lady Gaga ("Edge of Glory") and Katy Perry's "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F)".  It was so nice to hear that obvious 80's tribute!

Yes, so great I posted this one five pages ago. ::) But as long as we're on the subject, here's an underappreciated one from the Newsmen, featuring a Sax legend making a guest appearance. ^ Oh yes, Kenny G was a great saxophonist. I like a number of his songs. Including his 1987 instrumental "Songbird." :)

Kenny G goes way back to 1983 when he had a song entitled "Hi, How Ya Doin"?

Since I began the thread with this song, does this mean we've come full circle?
Post any others you can think of if we haven't!
