Subject: Favorite non-'80s albums by '80s Artists

Written By: lady of the 80s on 02/23/12 at 10:08 pm

Artists can span several decades, of course, but here's a list of my favorite non-'80s albums by artists who had their heyday in the 1980s.

1. Cascade (1995)--Peter Murphy
2. Lionheart (2004)--Saxon *
3. World Outside (1990)--Psychedelic Furs
4. Killing Ground (2001)--Saxon *
5. Raoul And The Kings Of Spain (1995)--Tears For Fears
6. District Line (2008)--Bob Mould #
7. Ninth (2011)--Peter Murphy
8. Third World Genocide (2004)--Nuclear Assault
9. Neon God Parts 1 & 2 (2004)--W.A.S.P.
10. Black Sheets of Rain (1990)--Bob Mould #
11. Body of Song (2005)--Bob Mould #
12. Outland (1991)--Gary Numan
13. Wish (1992)--The Cure
14. Master of the Moon (2004)--Dio
15. Dance of Death (2003)--Iron Maiden

* I think Saxon's best albums were in the 2000s.

# I don't really think of Mould as an '80s artists as I became a fan of his band Sugar in the 1990s, but he's probably known mostly for Husker Du, so I put him on the list.  All of his albums released in the 2000s have been terrific.

Fad Gadget: The Best of Fad Gadget (Mute Records/2001)

There was not much new material on Best of, but it was intended to inaugurate a brand new era of Fad Gadget
with a tour with Depeche Mode and new material anticipated.  Sadly, Frank Tovey died of a heart attack in 2002
before the they could record again.  Fireside Favourite (Toasted Crumpet Mix) was one of the new mixes on
Best of.

Severed Heads: Haul Ass! (SevCom/1998)

Never tell Tom Ellard he's an eighties band, he'll go bonkers. Sevs existed from 1978--2010,
but it was in the eighties when they had a deal with Nettwerk that they were best known.
I couldn't find any "Haul Ass" tracks on YouTube, so I settled for a favorite from "Gigapus," (1996)

OMD: Universal (Virgin/1996)

I think that was the best album they ever wrote.

What do you think of Raoul and the Kings of Spain?  That is one of my all-time favorite albums.

Fad Gadget: The Best of Fad Gadget

I have that CD.  I really like Fad Gadget.  I also have the Fad Gadget By Frank Tovey CD/DVD box set. I didn't include compilations on my list, otherwise it would have been on there.  I also have his 1991 album Grand Union as Frank Tovey and The Pyros.

Well, since everybody's already beaten me to it with most of the new wave :)

Motley Crue, New Tattoo (2000)

Not just for being the first hair metal band to include a line like "HTTP! I'm addicted to technology" in their music (as a nerd of the 80s, even those of us who enjoyed metal back in the day were ostracized by the true headbanger - I was even more surprised to hear that line as my former classmates were), but also for this epic cover of The Tubes' 1975 track White Punks On Dope on the same album:

  - Motley Crue, White Punks On Dope, ca. 2000.

Poor audio quality (the one on the studio album is great), but here's a live video from 2000.

I like RATKOS.  I've got nothing against it.  But ELAHE was the first time in 10 years that Roland and Curt worked together as a duo and they were able to work without being verbally abusive towards each other.  To me Tears was never the same without Curt.  :-[
