Subject: Bands that radically changed their sound over the years...

Just responded to a post that got me thinking about the band Ministry.  Any others bands you can think of that varied their sound so much?

The Doobies were forced to change as well (with the addition of Michael McDonald). Although they still sag their old songs as well....they had completely different sound (when McDonald was singing).

One (Dutch) band comes to mind. Not a band that had any success in US or UK, so you've probably never heard of them.

They started out as The Walkers, and this is them in 1971:

According to various websites, "There's No More Corn On The Brasos" was 'an international hit', selling more than 1 million copies. I've yet to find any evidence of this.

By 1981, following several changes in lineup, the band had changed their name to The Press...and they sounded like this:

Kool And The Gang changed their sound from funk to a rock edgy-electric guitar sound such in songs like

plus they also changed their sound in the early to mid 90's as well.

When the Human League split in 1980 Philip Oakey got to keep the name.  Martyn  Ware and Ian Craig Marsh formed Heaven 17 with singer Glenn Gregory.  Both bands enjoyed commercial success and neither sounded like their roots.

Al's politics are right-on, but his music is terrible.

The only Ministry record that had any lasting influence on my musical tastes was "Twitch," and a lot of that comes from Adrian Sherwood's involvement.

Kind of an interesting topic…

The Cure – From dark, brooding, goth post-punk to giddy British pop (OK, they will always be sort of goth-like but they’ve had their extremes). From "A Forest"...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ZwVgQ4Wq7E

...To “Friday I’m In Love” one of my most hated songs. 8-P
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYblUW5E6Lk

The Red Hot Chili Peppers – From straight ahead post 70’s George Clinton influenced California style funk.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-5F-f2O6vU

To just crappy Clearchannel sell-out pop. (And I do mean SELL-OUT in its most obvious definition). >:(
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtBbinpK5XI

Fishbone – Started out as a Ska themed band, fun stuff.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OuiuolN1r4

Then changed to…to…well, all over the place. Still good stuff though.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zICxh9kKZg

Other notable bands that changed from their post punk/alternative or new wave beginnings in the late 70’s/early 80’s to more of a pop sound in the 80’s (a bit more subtle though):

U2
The Police
INXS
Talking Heads
Elvis Costello (he thrived on changing up his sound)
Genesis (one of the most obvious ones)
Yes
B-52’s

Tears For Fears have changed their sound the most drastically.  They went from 1983's The Hurting with their dark and "look at us we're just as f---ed up as you are" music

To songs like Closest Thing To Heaven.  Nothing wrong with them wanting to ditch the synthetic sounds mind you and not feeling the same way they did when they started out but it just doesn't sound like them.

Of course, TFF had a much bigger budget for "Songs from the Big Chair" than for "The Hurting," which freed them to make the kind of album they really wanted.  Talk Talk did the same thing.  Once they could command more advance money, they brought in a raft of studio musicians.  The thing is, in both cases, I liked the straight-ahead synth pop better!

How about the 70's funk group Confunkshun? They had songs in the 70's with "Chase Me" and "Ffun" and then in the mid 80's with

Not really a band, but the first one that sprang to mind is Gino Vannelli.  To keep up with the times, he dropped the adult oriented rock and switched to new wave, then took a crack at soft rock.  One of the best transitions into various genres ...

I think Curt said that the label just wasn't supporting them as much as they were when he and Roland were young but still that's not much of an excuse.  I do like ELAHE very much.  Don't get me wrong.  But I think that some of the songs on that album were just out and out laziness on both of their parts.  Like Who you are, which is a song off of Curt's solo album Half-Way Pleased,  and they just recycled it.
I'm starting to think that Curt only got back together with Roland for financial gain because his solo career wasn't doing too well.  :( I don't even think that Roland and Curt will ever be as buddy buddy close as they were when they were younger.  :(
It was the same thing with Andy Taylor and Duran Duran.  He got back together with them just because there was so much money involved and when things started to not go his way he quit the band again.  :(  Which is too bad because I always liked Andy's guitar style.

The Fatback Band went from the funky horns to changing to an 80's computer synth sound in 1983.

They briefly returned once more in 1985.

Bananarama were originally more underground and had punk influences.
The Nanas in 1982:

And in 1986 they went a lot more feminine and turned to dance music:

^funny thing is "Venus" is their best moment ever and their most polished music video. Later ones were typically Stock Aitken Waterman bubblegum songs with horrible, cheap-looking videos:

I agree Bananarama's Venus was a great video.

In the 90s, Bananarama switched to Eurodance.  Their 1995 single 'Every Shade of Blue' was a Top 40 hit in Canada ...

Since the 2000s, they have performing Dance-Pop.  They had a great album in 2005 called 'Drama' that spawned two hits, most notably the UK Top 30 'Look on the Floor' that also reached the US Top 10 Dance chart

Perhaps that's why Curt was the last one to leave the band because he wasn't having a say in the production of the music? :(
