We had a local store here called Stokes Brothers.  That's where we always went.  Sadly, like so many other local places, it is now gone.

The only two from that list we had in Canada are Sears and Radio Shack, and of the two, only Sears still exists here

The big place around here to get Electronics back in the 80s was a place called Atlantique, a TV and Stereo store.  Some locations were also known as Atlantic.  It was a Montreal based chain that by 1986 had over 80 stores in Quebec and 45 in Ontario

I really didn't buy electronics back then, but I loved going to Best. The one we had near us in Virginia was built to look like the front of the building was broke off and there were trees growing out of the roof. Sooo cool to a young lad!!

My parents always got their electronics from Montgomery Ward:  TVs, VCRS, and my first CD carousel and dual Audio Reverse cassette player.

In Canada most cities had their own stereo shops as well as the big retailers like Sears, Woolco, Eatons and even grocery stores and drug stores had some stereos. My favorite was The Brick...they always had a great selection of units back then and thats where I go my first real stereo system in 1989..a Scott system with 120 watts..I loved that thing lol. I miss going into department stores and checking out all the electronic...stuff coming out now is just sad and has no quality. its all geared towards watching DVDs now not listening to music.

For me it was either Radio Shack or Canadian Tire.

Of the choices listed, I went with Service Merchandise.  (I miss that store)

But for my real electronics, I went mostly to specialty shops (which there were a lot more of in the 80's).  I was a regular customer at a local chain called Musicraft.  They had all the great audio - mostly medium line but a little high end, plus a little used.  I shopped there a lot.  :)

Radio Shack was da place!  I would go in there and irritate the sales staff by programming stupid stuff on their primitive Texas Instrument computers.
