The Scorpions had a number of songs that would also qualify in this category, such as "Rock You Like A Hurricane" and "I'm Leaving You" (both from 1984, from the album Love At First Sting), and "No One Like You" (1982).

I don't know if The Tubes would qualify as hard rock but they sure aren't heavy metal.

Also, "Seek and Destroy" goes in my book as one of the 10 best metal songs in HISTORY.

You know what's funny about that song? Everybody says it's about a contract killer but when you think about it, basically the idea in every verse is, "Is so-and-so person bothering you? Did you ever want so-and-so dead? Yes? Okay, great. Forget that idiot, let's you and I have sex." I see no indication in that song of any actual contract killing going on, except the random mention of cyanide/TNT etc. that comes out of nowhere and is not very specific.

You know, my brother and I were discussing this song a while back, when we got to this verse:

If ya got a lady and ya want her gone, but you ain't got the guts
She keeps naggin' at ya night and day, enough to drive you nuts
Pick up the phone, leave her alone, it's time you made a stand
For a fee, I'm happy to be, your back door man...

What's THAT all about?  ???

Maybe they really ARE AC/DC.  :o :o :o

LOL, that's funny. I'd never thought about it that way, I guess my read on that was that he was gonna set up with the guy to have an affair with his wife so she'd be all satisfied and wouldn't nag him so much. But I'm not sure that totally makes sense; even if you want your old lady dead, who's gonna pay someone else to schtupp their wife? I actually think your explanation is better.

The only explanation that doesn't make any sense is "I'm going to be your back door man" being synonymous with "I'm gonna kill your wife for you."

Ah, the fascinating, multilayered enigma of AC/DC lyrics. They're a lot like Nabokov, or "The Da Vinci Codes."

I know we're getting out of the 80's here but speaking of the fascinating, multilayered enigma of AC/DC lyrics...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fhgt6g78GTw

I'm dirty, mean and mighty unclean
I'm a wanted man
Public Enemy Number One
Understand
So lock up your daughter
Lock up your wife
Lock up your back door
And run for your life

The man is back in town
Don't you mess around

So basically what Bon Scott is saying here is that he's such a mean sonofabitch that unless you barricade your house shut he's going to ravage your daughter and your wife and after he's done with them he's going to cornhole you.  :o :o :o :o :o

Like I said, "AC/DC?"  ???

I am thinking it was a purposeful thing when it was written- "Hmm.. is this about this or that?"  They did use double entendre so much. I found a website long ago that dissects song meanings, and man oh man, this song, they were sending up all kinds of interpretations.  ;D  Especially the bit about being the back door man.

Oh, AC/DC was great at that, at least in the Bon Scott days. I mean, I must have heard this song over a thousand times and it still makes me laugh every time:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g23GiivXC78

The part that gets me every time is right at the end when he goes, "And I'm just itching to tell you about them...Oh we had such wonderful fun. Seafood, cocktail...CRABS.."  ;D

Yeah, that's one of them. I know that song pretty well.

"God's gift to ballroom notoriety and I always fill my ballroom, the event is never small"
"And my balls are always bouncing, and my ballroom always full, and everybody cums and cums again"

;D

It's funny, i've tried more than once to hate Big Balls. I mean, musically it's retarded, and come on, playing with whether he means costume balls or human testicles? that's so clever you'd have to be at least four to think of it.

But then I actually listen to it again and the double entendres are just SO ambitious and hilarious you can't help but love it. I can't help it! I LOVE BIG BALLS!

Here's one where it's a great song, but something about it has always bothered me and i haven't figured it out until recently. (same as dirty deeds...)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UwhSxqJkEz8

so it's the live version and in the beginning the vocalist says "some people say the pen is mightier than the sword. but i say #%^^ the pen. because you can DIE. BY THE SWORD."

and i remember, when i was a kid, 15 or so, loved this album and this song, listened to it all the time, but i could never figure out what bothered me. then i realized.... yes, MFers, you're missing the whole point of the expression "the pen is mightier than the sword." the whole point is, if, say, you're native american and the european settlers come in with a homestead act that ...

and then the song always started rockin' and i always lost my train of thought. the whole point of that expression is that the power of rhetoric is greater than the power of physical violence. and that lead-in showed that slayer totally didn't grasp that, they were being incredibly literal, almost to a howardian degree. but then, the song started and it was always so awesome i not only stopped being troubled about it, i actually forgot why it was that i was troubled in the first place.

One more thing on AC/DC: If you like the Bon Scott era then you really need to check out the band Jackyl next time they're in you're neck of the woods. They totally have the same blend of stupid and brilliant that early AC/DC had, along with that wild/crazy vibe you can only get from Southerners.

Jackyl was most notorious in the 90's for The Lumberjack Song, in which frontman Jesse James Dupree sings a dirty blues number while accompanying himself with a chainsaw. I saw Jackyl 2 or 3 years ago at a free concert put on by a Harley dealership here in KC and it was great. The climax of the show was when none other that Billy Ray Cyrus joined the band on stage with a chainsaw identical to Dupree's and did The Lumberjack Song, complete with a chainsaw duet. I was almost mesmerized as to how perfect it was. It was almost like redneck nirvana.

I'm telling ya, you've got to see Jackyl. You'd totally dig them.  :D

A one-hit wonder that best exemplifies the future that my generation foresaw 30 years ago:

  - Autograph, Turn Up The Radio (1983)

Because the hair metal of the 80s that does not involve sliding electronic doors, smoke screens, the MCR font that's still used on the bottom of most banks' checks, half a case of hairpsray, and STAINLESS STEEL ROBOTS WITH FRICKIN' LASERS is not the true hair metal of the 80s.
