Subject: E.T. the Extra Terrestrial

I just saw E.T. on AMC, I hadn't seen it since it first came out 30 years ago and I was completely blown away by how awesome it is. :)

It's coming to Blu-Ray in a matter of months.  I cannot wait!
I haven't watched it probably since 1982, so I have been waiting this long.  I think I was moreso disappointed by that E.T. game for Atari lol

the atari game sucked lol but the movie was great... I saw like 10 times in the theater and about everytime it was on HBO. I haven't seen it in a few years but I remember, after watching Super 8 last summer I really wanted to watch ET again. Alas I have the DVD at home but didn't watch it then... I'll probably get the blue ray when it comes out. I think I recall not being very happy with the DVD transfer of the film when I first bought the box set.

It is by far one of my favorite science-fiction films of all time. I first saw it on video at a friend's house in late 1988, and enjoyed it so much that I received two copies of it on video for my birthday the following year. Less than 20 years later, I found out that most of it was filmed in the north part of L.A. city, in the foothill communities, which I kinda suspected when I first saw it, since those areas looked quite familiar to me.

The Atari version sucked, there was not much thought into making the game that's why it was rushed in 1983 to get them on the shelves quicker.

I wonder if Hollywood would make a sequel since they're so high in creating remakes lately? What would E.T. look and sound like and would the originals be back?

I saw it when it first came out and I haven't seen it since.  Maybe I'll watch it the next time it's on T.V..  I don't know why I've never watched it again, I remember liking it at the time.

My grandma took my sisters, cousins, and I to see it when it came out in theatres, but I was too little to really grasp the concept.  I do remember going to the theatre though.  I saw it again when it came out on video when I was 10 or 11, and even though I liked it, I cried and cried, and CRIED when those mean government people came, and then when they found E.T. laying next to the river.  Such a classic.

When it first came out, I went to see it TWICE. Once on a first date which a guy knew the people who ran the theatre so we got in for free and another time with my then-future first husband & a friend. I remember sitting next to our friend and hearing sniffling sounds from her towards the end. I just reached into my purse for a tissue and handed it to her.  :D ;D ;D ;D  (We also went to see Poltergeist with her and the first thing that happened on the screen she lets out this big scream which scared the bejesus out of me-more the movie did. Needless to say, going to the movies with her was an adventure.  ;) :D ;D ;D ;D )

I do have the movie on VHS that I haven't watched forever it seems. Maybe I should revisit it some day.

It's funny about the Atari game, I remember playing it at my cousin's house when it came out and we're all like, "WTF are we supposed to do here?!?

If you go any gaming website and search "worst video games of all time," the E.T. game for the Atari 2600 is at the top of every list. And the sad thing is, it got to the point where whenever I thought of E.T. I immediately thought of that crappy game, and this had completely overshadowed any memories I had of the actual movie.

So when I woke up hung over Sunday morning, I turned the TV on and was looking through the guide when I saw E.T. was on AMC and I was just like, "Hmm, E.T...whatever, might as well check it out," not being really enthused about it or anything but kind of curious since I hadn't seen it since it came out 30 years ago.

Needless to say I was completely blown away by it, to the point where it turned a good weekend into a great one. And, to be honest, I'm kind of pissed off now at Atari for tarnishing my memory of this great movie with that stupid game. As a matter-of-fact, I'm glad Atari went into the toilet after the E.T. fiasco, because they totally deserved to.  >:(

There really is no shame in crying at movies. I remember when Carlos & I were dating and we were watching some sappy movie. I was getting weepy and I didn't want Carlos to think less of me because I was crying at some stupid movie. I looked over at him and he had tears streaming down his face. So, I wasn't the only one. Last night, we watched the movie Pay It Forward and it was basically a crying fest between me, Carlos & his sister. All three of us were bawling our eyes out.  ;D ;D ;D

BTW, karma for admitting it.  ;)

The E.T. game for Atari 2600 was the first video game I ever finished.  To this day, I still love it.  At the time, it was an exciting game, but looking back, it is quite bad.

With that said, it is aces compared to the remake they made:  In the early 2000s, Nintendo released an E.T. Game for the Game Boy Advance, and it was even worse than the Atari 2600 version.  If anything, I'd rather play the Atari 2600 version

I doubt it. Steven Spielberg himself even declined to make one. I doubt that they'd even consider it now since it's been so long since the film was originally released. Even if they could, someone else would have to do E.T.'s voice since the person who voiced him (who was uncredited, btw) passed away a long time ago.

They could always do stunt casting and use Debra Winger. Her voice was used initially until they cast Pat Welsh and used her voice in the final edit.

Interesting to know... did any of these have the same respective casts?

Not complete casts, but main cast members yes.  The big surprise was Karen Allen in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull reprising her role as Marion, that she played in Raiders of the Lost Ark.  Tron Legacy even had Bruce Boxleitner reprise his role as Alan Bradley (aka Tron)

Road toHell was a streets sequel? How dismiss that film

It is a film that should never have been made, because they totally ruined a great story line that the original had.  I have not seen the complete film, but I watched clips on YouTube.  They turned it into a horror film with Cody as a burned out soldier turned sadistic killer.  Some people dismiss it as a sequel, but two original cast/characters are there:  Michael Paré as Tom Cody and Deborah Van Valkenburgh as his sister Reva.  The only other high point is new versions of 'Nowhere Fast' and 'Tonight is What it Means to Be Young'

Didn't Speilberg do a "new" version some years later where they re-recorded a line that Gertie said something about "terrorists".?  Talk about censoring, why would you censor your own film?  Kinda over-sensitive I think...

Yeah, I cried at the end of E.T., when we thought he was dead from experiementation... Or am I thinking of some other alien movie?  Only saw it the one time.

One of my former co-workers a long time ago went to a convention of book-sellers/movie distributors, and various companies had interactive displays to draw attention to their booths.  One company I recall had a photo booth set up where you climbed onto the bicycle, and they took a photo of you, and when it was printed, it was like you were in the E.T. bike scene flying across the moon with E.T. in the basket.  Kinda cute and quirky.

it wasn't from experimentation....or I don't think it was... he was dying anyway.... the kids needed to help him get home because it was becoming painfully obvious that ET could not survive long term on earth.  But Nasa, NSA, the CDC or whoever the hazmatted suits were didn't have time to conduct actual experiments...  at least I don't think they did....so really the only reason ET initially died was because the kids had been delayed in getting him the help he needed... Even if the suits hadn't come in ET would've died... fortunately he reanimated and the kids got off their ass and got him back to his ship where he could recover accordingly.

"But other "improvements" smack of PC revisionism. Elliot's mom once scolded him for looking like a terrorist in his Halloween costume; now she says he looks like a hippie. And remember those guns the feds carried? Thanks to the miracle of digital, they're now brandishing walkie-talkies. Gone, too, is that moment when Elliot calls his brother "penis breath." It's funny, isn't it?  "Penis breath" had to go, yet in 2002 with the click of the mouse you could get hardcore porn which would have been available to private collectors in 1982.  And South Park was the most popular cartoon!

For what it's worth, Spielberg eventually recanted of his bowdlerization of E.T., putting him well ahead of Lucas when it comes to artistic integrity.

"Steven Spielberg: When people ask me which E.T. they should look at, I always tell them to look at the original 1982 E.T. If you notice, when we did put out E.T. we put out two E.T.s. We put out the digitally enhanced version with the additional scenes and for no extra money, in the same package, we put out the original ‘82 version. I always tell people to go back to the ’82 version."

I wonder if Hollywood would make a sequel since they're so high in creating remakes lately? What would E.T. look and sound like and would the originals be back?

Steven Spielberg had  planned a sequel but decided one was enough.

It's best not to create anymore sequels with E.T.

For "E.T. the Extra Terrestrial", the film director Steven Spielberg could not find a good storyline for a sequel, so there was not one made.

At one stage in Spielberg's career he was against sequels, but that all changed with Indiana Jones.

Yes, E.T. did.

Btw, do we know wherever E.T. is male or female, was it established?

Well, the people in the movie (especially the kids) used masculine pronouns to refer to E.T.

In fact, even in one scene Gertie (Drew Barrymore's character) asks Elliot, "Is it a boy or a girl?", to which Elliot responds "He's a boy."

Yep...so then it was assumed that E.T. (the alien) was a male.

Are there any reports in interviews with Steven Spielberg giving on what he says on the gender of E.T.?

I thought I might have read such a fact on IMDB, stating that Spielberg did not specify which gender E.T. was (or something of that nature), but I cannot confirm which way it was decided.

Interesting to think about...... Seeing how nice ET is I would say he is a girl.......... (I dunno)

Subject: Re: E.T. the Extra Terrestrial

Well, E.T. was voiced off-camera by a woman (actress Pat Welsh), but uncredited in the film itself. That doesn't really mean anything, though, since many male cartoon characters have been voiced by female performers (such as Nancy Cartwright for Bart Simpson and other male child characters on the Simpsons).

To check on his health.

He eventually dies, but is subsequently revived.

I love this movie.... Im glad I have it recorded off analogue TV in 1991 (Found the tape @ salvation army) -- THEY TOTALLY DESTROYED THIS MOVIE ON THE OFFICIAL MCA TAPE!! (DIGITALLY RECORDED -- Vocals quite low while the music/sound affects are loud as well as other things (Thin looking, etc)) This is on the 1988 release.....

There has gotta be an earlier release!! -- I HAVENT BEEN ABLE TO FIND IT :(

Well... I'm not sure if any video of it was released prior to 1988 (that's the copyright date on the VHS that I have). I also know that that's the first time I ever watched the movie. (It was at a friend's house.)

Right... in fact, I'm not sure when videos started to get released, given that I was a little boy during that time. However, my family and I got our first VCR in 1987 and enjoyed watching videos on it within the first few months.

thanks for that info.

Still, why it would not have first been released to home video right after its success, during a time that VHS was being manufactured, I cannot quite figure out.

However, there is a big paragraph on Wiki explaining all this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E.T._the_Extra-Terrestrial#Release_and_sales

Really very sad.......

C. Thomas Howell is looking old and gaunt.  :(. I saw him in something recently and didn't know it was him at first.

And now a decade later, this is still true. In fact, the picture of him on his Wiki page shows him with grey hair, but that picture is not all that recent (before now).

But the quality isnt the same...... I wanted to tell ya buddy I have since found a beautiful analogue copy of ET!!

It was recorded off a local channel in my area in 1991 OTA!! (I can tell its OTA because of how much noise there is in the video) but that doesnt bother me,its the nicest copy I have ever had of it :)

EDIT:

I forgot I already told ya of this (Ah man!!)

Reverend Lovejoy: I remember another gentle visitor from the heavens, he came in peace and then died, only to come back to life, and his name was E.T., the extra terrestrial. I loved that little guy.
