Subject: Italo Disco of the 80s

Does anyone here have any information on this scene, what clubs were involved in it, typical fashions, and any other information anyone could find relevant to this thread. I tried to do a search and came up with nothing in this forum about Italo Disco. Hope someone can help =)

One of the BIG places to produce alot of talent in the Hi-NRG and Italo Disco genres was here in Canada, most notably Province du Quebec.  These were all big club hits somewhere in the world ...

Voggue - Dancin' the Night Away (1981)

Thank you whistle! :D

@Max I wanted personal experiences and 'insider knowledge' of the scene, not a wikipedia page, that I've already seen.

Thanks for this thread.  Gives me an excuse to dig up some old Koto stuff.  Swing by our samples thread, and see if you can fill in any of our gaps.  YouTube and other sources may be able to back up some stuff that we weren't able to figure out.

Meanwhile, back in italo-land:

FwG5j9KdHWk

  - Koto, Jabdah (Vocal Version), 1986.

Original video from back when crossfading footage of Jabba the Hutt from Return of the Jedi with scenes of your band was pretty high-tech, and the state-of-the-art video mashing techniques involved having the overlaid credits swoop into place.

FWzrcb8qZg8

  - Koto, Dragon's Legend (12" extended vocal, 1988), fan-made video ca. 2011.

Fan-made video from when everybody has a non-linear-video editing studio on their desktop, and getting footage digitized from the 1983 laserdisc game Dragon's Lair (or a DVD that was presumably sourced from the same cels that were used for the laserdisc) is just a few mouse clicks away.  Friendship is magic, but any sufficiently-advanced technology is close enough.

I'm sorry, I can't give you any real insider information. I wasn't much of a clubber.  :(

That said, Italodisco was rather big in the 1980s over here so even if you stayed at home there wasn't much chance of escaping. I can't think of any Dutch acts that tried their hand at it (besides Koto), but this gives me a chance to post some videos anyway. (You wanna know fashion? Just watch the clips!)

Pino d'Angio - Ma Quale Idea (1981)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_QRZ2ana2Q

(Sounds familiar? That's because a sample was used in Madison Avenue's Don't Call Me Baby)

Ryan Paris - Dolce Vita (1983)

Moon Ray - Comanchero (1984)

Video - Somebody (Hey Girl) (1984)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXdgYuDZ_GA

Part of the problem with Italo was that we didn't necessarily know it was Italo.  I remember that track, I like that track, I had it filed under "synthpop".

Silver Pozzoli - Around My Dream (1985)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZPJpfmqrhk

Now we're getting obscure.  Time to break out some obscure covers:

3Ri9UZlpewE
  - Silver Pozzoli, Step by Step (12"), 1985.

And if you couldn't get away with spinning the original, the cover version was just as awesome (with 20/20 hindsight, the cover's album is about 20% cooler today, but that's just me being biased :)  Where was I?  Oh yeah.  Taffy covering Silver Pozzoli.

Xq3Ec_I_m80
  - Taffy, Step by Step (Angel Gabriel 12"), 1987.

Taffy actually made it big enough to have an official music video, not just the YouTube fan-made ones used as covers for the music:
2_QbFWX4qN8
  - Taffy, Once More, 1985 (Up there's the best version of the radio edit I can find, and here's the 12" remix)

And now to round out my Taffy theme tonight, here's a 25-year-old unsolved musical mystery: Where'd the samples come from in this remix? They all refer to US radio stations ca. 1986.

V3qbk8-K4ys
  - Taffy, I Love My Radio (Hot Tracks Mix) (original track 1985, remix by Mark "Hot Rod" Trollan, Hot Tracks #5, 1986.

No, not "Does anyone remember the difference between Italo disco and Italo house, and/or the difference between Italo house and Chicago house?" (Because if I ever did, I sure as hell don't anymore.  Although I would like to know...)

But more importantly, I still need some help from Chicagoans and other midwestern radio fans for for Sample Sources for Taffy's I Love My Radio.  Help me out, Chicago, and I'll spread the gospel that friends don't let friends put ketchup on their hot dogs.

Samples in question start at the start of the song, and resume at the break at 4:19 in the linked video.

Italo disco, Euro disco, Hi-NRG, synthpop... it's all a blur to me. :D

Ah yes - the other Silver Pozzoli hit record. Sure I remember. 8)

We were probably on the other side of the planet, we can let it slide.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8UAe3ybMTs

  - Finzy Kontini, Sexy Bon, 1989.

The original 80s cover art is more appropriate to the thread (hit up those discogs links!), but the audio's identical, and if I've gotta stare at something for six minutes, it's gonna be CGI footage of a Maserati being driven through the Italian countryside... until I realized it was set in Japan.  And that the guy recording his game session was suffering from a severe case of keyboard/console-impairment vs. what he'd have had if he'd been using a steering wheel.  Still, it's close enough for Internet work!

Off to rummage through the archives, back in a few days!

"??? number full of zero,

And in keeping with the board's tropism towards penguins, no Italo thread could be complete with:
