I can't remember exactly when or where I first saw an NES, but it was a very big deal at the time and some time in 1987 I raided my savings account from my paper route and bought one.

In the early 1980's the Atari 2600 was king but then came The Great Video Game Crash of 1983, and for a few years after it seemed there were no new home video game systems available. Then, seemingly out of nowhere the NES appeared and (apologies to moycon) it was light years ahead of the Atari 2600. As a matter-of-fact, I would argue that the leap from the 2600 to the NES was more dramatic than that from the original Sony PlayStation to the PS3. The colors were much more vibrant, the game action was much faster and more realistic, and for those of us who for years suffered through those awful Atari joysticks (if you played for more than 30 minutes they were absolute murder on your wrists), the introduction of the D-pad controller was a godsend. The NES totally revitalized the home video game market and mine is still down in my parents' basement back in Nebraska.  :)

Only thing I have to disagree with you on, Billzy, is your statement that Super Mario Bros. is the best video game of all time (and this is strictly a matter of opinion).

My own personal favorite games for the NES were:

Mike Tyson's Punch-Out

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0ecvFWteaZU/T24B2FXjYfI/AAAAAAAAAHs/uX560Xen6oo/s1600/Mike+Tyson's+Punch-Out!!+Giant+Boxer+3.jpg

I was a huge fan of the arcade game Super Punch-Out, and I was thrilled when they came out with the NES version. Occasionally when I go back to visit my folks, I'll hook up my old NES and play this game.

AND I STILL CAN'T F**KING BEAT MIKE TYSON.  >:( >:( >:(

My other favorite NES game, which unfortunately I don't have, was R.C. Pro-Am.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-pLaWZrL2A&feature=relmfu

I've always loved racing games, and R.C. Pro-Am was remarkably good at simulating drifting way back in 1988. I loved this game, and to be honest there wasn't another game that could satisfy my racing jones quite like R.C. Pro-Am could until the original Gran Turismo came out for the original Sony PlayStation in 1998.

I just remember being with my friends and playing Super Mario Brothers.  There were usually 3 or 4 or us - and so two were playing, and the other two were sitting there waiting for one of the other ones to die so we could have a turn.  And of course all my friends were better than I was, so they'd play for an hour, and I'd lose all my lives in 5 minutes!  ;D

I'm a Tetris fan myself.  I used to sit and play that for hours...

It was hard to do, but definately do-able.  I used to do a trick on 4-2 where if you only had a little piece of the warp beanstalk showing, you could walk through it to the other side of the screen, then when you jumped down the 3rd pipe, you would be in the warp zone.  Just climbing the beanstalk would have got you to the same place, but glitches in games are fantastic!

Beating Tyson is a challenge, but once you get the hang of it, it's a breeze.  Tyson (or Mr. Dream for the later NES re-release) is the only person I cannot either get a KO or TKO in Round 1.  There is a way to get a KO on him in Round 1 if you can get a star and use it, but I've only seen it done once.

The new version of Punch-Out for Nintendo Wii is cool.  At a certain point in the game, when you punch Don Flamenco, his toupee flies off as he falls ;D

I never needed 100 lives, I'm one of those hour players.  Never tried that trick.  I did have the Game Genie.  Infinate time on Marble Madness is really helpful for getting past the 6th final level.  Very helpful to have infinate ammo energy in Megaman 2.

I could also say the original Goonies game, but it was never released in North America on the Nintendo.  It's ony appearance in North America at the time was on the arcade Nintendo VS machines (those ones where 1 quarter got you like 5 minutes of game play).  I played it back in the day in Arcade, but when I got it for Nintendo Emulator a few years back, I could not stop playing it.  I think it was the video game music version of the Cyndi Lauper song LOL

Obscure Video Game Trivia of the Night: Atari/Namco's arcade version of Rolling Thunder was the one I remember.  But alongside it was Jaleco's City Connection (aka Cruisin'), which also appeared in coin-op form in 1985.

I loved the NES because it was the first home console to give players a real deep RPG experience.
I still have an NES to this day, although admittedly haven't fired it up in years. I also have a couple pirated systems.
These knock-offs tried to pass themselves off as more modern systems like the Playstation or the Nintendo 64, boasting of including thousands of games. In reality, they included around 40 games, and they were NES games and/or NES hacks of games. Still fun.

The arcade version of City Connection was far superior to the NES version, but for a home version, the NES version was a good match.  I used to pump so many quarters into City Connection.  I really liked the music in the game.  It reminded me of the same style of beach music heard on Sega's Outrun

Only downside to the NES era of games was that you couldn't stop in the middle of a game (with the exception of Zelda, I believe), shut the console down, and then turn it on a day or two later and start right where you left off. You had to finish the entire game in one sitting, and some of those games were quite long.

I remember playing a game called Section Z which took several hours to finish.

It was a cool game but man, it was a commitment!

I still have Ninja Gaiden and it was also a cool game but I don't believe I've ever finished it.  :-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkKlSdUxBhM

Not exactly true for all NES games. The NES used two types of game saves. One was a cart with a battery back up. Like the Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior, Willow, Zelda games, etc... These really do kind of suck because the battery would eventually die. To replace them, you'd have to take the cart apart, remove the old battery from the clamp, and insert a fresh battery. Details here...

http://www.nintendorepairshop.com/nes_game_battery_replacement.htm

The other method of game saving on the NES was inputting a game save code. When you wanted to quit a game, your would choose "Quit" and it would generate a code you had to write down. Usually looked something like this...

XFDGH GHFJR JFKLP

Often time with games that used this type of save feature, you could start a game up, choose continue, and enter the code you had written down. Metroid, Faxanado, Metal Gear, Mega Man, Shadowgate...There were actually probably 100 NES games that used this method.

Remember the old classic PAPERBOY? Did anyone ever see or play the old arcade version with the actual 'handlebars' controls? I tried it for the first time recently at a retro bar/gameroom called BARCADE in the NYC area, and I was aweful. It's really hard.

I know they've already been mentioned, but I also loved these on the NES:
BURGERTIME
CONTRA
STINGER
BUBBLE BOBBLE
SMB3
Donkey Kong
Wilfred Kong (Hacked version of Donkey Kong that has WILFERD BRIMLEY instead of Kong, and he throws bowls of bran at you. DIABETES)
A BOY AND HIS BLOB
BASEWARS
DOUBLE DRAGON 3

In the game you can't shoot the dog, you'll wind up missing bullets from shooting at him that you won't have any ammo to shoot the ducks.

Interesting fact... (or not  :D )

While you can't shoot the dog on NES version...

You can shoot the dog in a bonus round on the arcade version.

In Paperboy you have to have good aim.

So why couldn't Nintendo make it an individual video game? ???

I don't know... Maybe some people would have complained about it. It could also be that they were either in hurry or didn't have the room to put bonus rounds in the system version. Keep in mind it can only happen in the bonus round anyway.

I'm going go and check for any info involving that part of the game.

I still have my NES system-but it hasn't been set up in years. I bought it to play ONE game-ZELDA!!! My sister introduced me to Zelda and I had to have it. I bought the system at a second hand store and thought I did great paying $50 and they even threw Zelda in for free. I still have a bunch of games. Some of the ones that I remember that I really like (besides Zelda):

-Dr. Mario
-Dragon Warrior
-Monster Party
-Star Tropics
