Subject: CANCON - Canadian Music of the 80s

Written By: whistledog on 09/24/12 at 9:36 pm

CANCON stands for Canadian Content and since 1970, has helped bring recognition to many Canadian Artists, Songwriters and Producers.  This is my tribute to the great ones of the 1980s.  Much of these never made it outside of Canada, but some of them did.  Feel free to contribute!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In 1980, a rock group called The Pumps released their debut album titled Gotta Move and it rose to #59 in Canada.  Following a name change to Orphan, their 2nd album titled Lonely at Night was released in 1983 and rose to #92.  Though neither album produced any mainstream hits, the track Miracle from the latter received lots of radio play and is still well loved to this day.  This song is proof that you don't even have to be in the charts to have a well known song!

"If I could pick my 10 favourite songs of all time, this one would definately be in there"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRz5JSmcU2E

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In 1981, the rock band Prism released their 5th album titled Small Change.  It was their first album with new vocalist Henry Small and despite the change, didn't stop the album from becoming a success.  The lead single Don't Let Him Know made it to #49 in Canada.  Written by Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance, the song also rose to #39 in the US, giving the band their only Top 40 hit in America.  It was also the first Top 40 appearance for Bryan Adams in America.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Formed in 1964, Chilliwack had a string of well-known hits in Canada during the 70s and early 80s, even charting a few singles in the US as well, the best known of which was in 1981 called My Girl (Gone, Gone, Gone).  In 1983, they released a greatest hits album titled Segue.  The album only made it to #79 in Canada, but it featured 1 new track titled Don't Stop that reached #46 in Canada.  It was their last ever chart appearance and the song also made an appearance on their 12th album Look In, Look Out in 1984.  This song is proof that you don't have to be in the Top 40 to have a well-known song!

Paul Janz - Believe in me

Excellent choices.  That Paul Janz song is great!
In the 70s, Paul Janz got his start with his brothers in a contemporary Christian band called Deliverance.  They were not too successful, but did notch one minor hit in 1980 called Leaving L.A. that reached #71 in the US and #57 in Canada

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umWEAh-pwxM

My favourite song of all time over any decade is a Paul Janz song called Close My Eyes.  It came out in 1985 and though it only reached #94 in Canada (his lowest charting single), it was a popular radio favourite, and is the one song that everytime I hear, makes me think of the wonderful times of the 80s

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uI2fRmSQg8k

Bryan Adams: Heaven

Wonderful choices!  Here's something not many know about the song 'Heaven'.  It was initially written for A Night in Heaven, a 1983 box office bomb starring Christopher Atkins about a college student who falls in love with his female professor.  The song was never thought of as a single until Adams included it on his Reckless album in 1984.  It eventually became the album's third single in April of 1985 and gave him his first ever US #1 hit

The actual opening credits from the film is where the song is heard:

The Spoons ~ Romantic Traffic
Eddie Schwartz - Special girl

I still hear that Spoons song on the radio all the time.  It's very well known for a song that never made the Top 40.  Gotta love the "doo doo" part.  Fun to sing along to.

I always feel like a bad Canadian when I say this, but I prefer the cover version of Special Girl by America better than the Schwartz version (but his is still good).  Both came out in 1984.  Eddie's version first made it to #27 on the Canadian Adult Contemporary chart, but the America version made it to #7 on that chart and also peaked at #15 on the US Adult Contemporary chart.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lbt4y65gBY

In the US, Eddie Schwartz was best seen as a songwriter, penning popular songs such as Hit Me With Your Best Shot by Pat Benatar (1980), Don't Shed A Tear by Paul Carrack (1987), The Doctor by The Doobie Brothers (1989) and the aforementioned America song

Human Race is great.  I hear it on the radio quite often, so much in fact that you'd swear it was Tom Cochrane's biggest hit.

Here's a few that never made the Top 40, but radio stations didn't mind.  I remember these like they were #1 hits ...

David Gibson - Look Who's Crying Now
This was produced by the late Domenic Troiano
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p7PA4zvncDg

Diamond in the Rough - Where is Love
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqY5jh_Pcjo

Diamond in the Rough - Walk on the Wire
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQ0qrtb1psw

The 1988 self-titled debut by Diamond in the Rough is to me the greatest Canadian album of the 80s.  Along with the 2 singles mentioned above, the album had a 3rd hit called Ain't Good Lovin' that reached #47 in Canada and features IMO the greatest SAX solo ever heard in a pop song.  It's not on YouTube, but it is available on Veoh (video site like YouTube)

I have two more for today, and both are from the late 80s.

Indio ~ Hard Sun

^ That Johansen one is great.  It was produced by the late Domenic Troiano (whom you can also see on the album cover that features that song).  Glen Johansen had previously scored a club hit in 1984 with a cover of Eddy Grant's Killer On A Rampage.  Fine Line was his only Top 40 hit.  The follow-up was called Here We Go Again and made it to #48 in 1988

Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam did a cover of Hard Sun a few years ago, and alot of people thought his version was an original hit.  The Indio version was a rock hit apparently in the US, but not a mainstream hit like it was for us

Straight lines ~ Letting go

Another Eddie Schwartz song.

Love both those songs.

'Letting Go' made it to #6 in Canada.  The follow-up single 'There Are No Secrets' made it to #40, both in 1982.  Their debut album in 1980 featured a fantastic song called 'Heads Are Gonna Roll'.  It did not chart, but radio loved it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqfV97etrlc

When Straight Lines parted ways, the core duo of David Sinclair and Bob Buckley formed a new band called The Body Electric.  This one from 1985 I remember well.  It never made the Top 40, but is a further example of a song that never became a BIG hit, but is still well remembered ...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLbjFWr7Qqk

American soap star Michael Damian did a cover version of 'Letting Go'.  It appears as an album track on his 1984 album 'Love is A Mystery'.  Always thought that was strange as Straight Lines had no success outside of Canada.

The first charting single from Straight Lines was 'Roanne' in 1980.  It peaked at #76 in Canada

Major Hoople's Boarding House - Someone

I don't know which I prefer either.  What always troubled me about the Santana version was their version was performed in the exact same style that Ian did his original.  Ian's version only made it to #28 in Canada, but Santana went all the way to #3.  I guess it's all in the name

I like this one.  One of the finest cover songs of the 80s.  There are alot of people who don't know this is a cover, and I think that's only because the original, as performed by Lorence Hud in 1972, was only a hit in Canada

Aldo Nova ~ Fantasy

Fantasy is fantastic.  Often regarded as a one hit wonder, but he had other hits.  Fantasy was his best though.

Here's a bit if Hi-NRG straight outta Quebec ...

Voggue was a disco duo comprised of singers Angela Songui and Chantal Condor.  In 1981, they released the single Dancin' the Night Away that was a Club hit in Canada, and even saw the Top 40 in several European countries including The Netherlands and the United Kingdom

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vamqMLTF7ZU

When Voggue parted ways in the early 80s, Chantal went solo.  Her self-titled debut album in 1986 featured a club hit called Don't You Want My Love that was written by Aldo Nova.  Her next album simply titled Chantal in 1989 produced a pair of popular dance hits ...

Yes you're allowed to have a typo.  ;) I saw that and I thougt "have I been singing that song's lyrics incorrectly for the past 30 some odd years?"?  ;)

No, you had it right. I think it's the best song from "Parachute Club" I like it more than "Rise up".

No actually the name of the song is "Feet of the Moon" not "Feet on the Moon!"

You're both wrong!  The correct title is "At the Feet of the Moon" :P

Rise Up was good, but overplayed.  "At the Feet of the Moon" is definatly their best.  I also liked their 1986 hit "Love is Fire" featuring a duet with John Oates (what, you mean John Oates does sing???? lol)

I know those both well.  I like Kim Mitchell, but for some reason, I never liked 'Go For A Soda'.  I can listen to it now, but it's still not a song I hold near the top of his complete hit singles.

Here's a few forgotten classics from the late 80s ...

Big Bam Boo - Shooting From My Heart (1989)
One half of this group was actually from England, but they still qualified for CANCON in the Artist category and this was their only Top 40 hit
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBQJK15PEe8

Coleman Wilde - It Doesn't Matter (1988)
Introduced as the jingle to commercials for Foster's Lager.  It became a single and soared up the charts and was their only hit
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKRbJrAkf7E

Myles Goodwyn - Do You Know What I Mean? (1988)
A cover of the 1972 Lee Michaels hit.  The single version of this was a duet with Canada's metal queen Lee Aaron and that version reached the Top 50.  Myles Goodwyn is (of course) the lead singer for April Wine
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kzhi8ZTDVIs

Roman Grey - IBU (1988)
Duo of Ross Roman and David Grey.  This one made the Top 40

Big Bam Boo - If You Could See Me Now (1989)

Myles Goodwyn - Do You Know What I Mean? (1988)

Like the one above, from his self-titled 1988 solo debut.  This one made #41 in Canada ...

Myles Goodwyn - My Girl (1988)

Even if they used Canadian crew members, shooting in Canada would not be enough as the producers behind the music as well as TFF themselves are from the UK

Here's a few singles by known Canadian artists that made the Top 40 chart in Canada, but never made the US Hot 100.

Corey Hart - Spot You in A Coalmine (1988)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zc326vtXb4o

Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young - American Dream (1988)
written entirely by Neil Young, who also sings the main vocals.  This song realistically is Neil Young featuring Crosby, Stills and Nash
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABfsIInfXgU

Sheriff - You Remind Me (1982)
Their debut single.  The follow-up was the infamous When I'm With You in 1983
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cH_HmiGXoNg

Loverboy - Lady of the 80s (1981)
This one only reached #43 in Canada, but worth a mention anyway!

After 'One Chance', Meissner never charted again until 1992 with a Top 40 hit called 'River of Fire and it's follow-up 'It's No Secret', both from the same album as 'If It Takes All Night'.  One of the few Canadian artists of the 80s that I enjoyed more in the 90s

Holding Out For You (1986)
One of the biggest radio hits that year.  So long forgotten, it's great to hear it again

Ah Tim Feehan.  Former lead singer of Footloose.  I always liked his voice.  Shame he did not have more success.  His biggest solo hit was a duet with a singer named Vikki Moss called 'Never Say Die'.  It topped the Canadian A/C chart in 1983

I liked some of Erroll's songs. Did Erroll Starr have any success outside of Canada?

As far as I know, he never charted outside of Canada

Zappacosta is also great.  He was lead singer of Surrender.  They released a trio of albums between 1979-1982, but only notched 2 chart hits before Zappacosta officially went solo in 1984.  What they had was memorable though ...

1979 - Find Your Way
1983 - Start Again

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tV7xNOts4w

Surrender also had a single called It's All Been Done Before in 1982 which gained radio play, but no chart action.  Zappacosta would re-record it for his 1984 solo debut.

CANCON does not always mean Canadian Artists.  Here's a non-Canadian artist that met CANCON qualifications in a fantastic way ...

In 1982, a British group called Rosetta Stone (fronted by ex-Bay City Roller Ian Mitchell) released an EP titled Hidin' From Love.  On this album were two songs titled Remember and the title track Hidin' From Love, both which were written by Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance and originally recorded by Adams for his 1980 self-titled debut.  Where the Adams' 1980 original of Hidin' From Love only reached #64 in Canada, the Rosetta Stone version reached #46 in Canada.  I prefer the cover to the Adams original.  The Rosetta Stone version can be heard in the 1983 movie Class starring Rob Lowe and Andrew McCarthy

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtbLWyA5JSE

Also on the Hidin' From Love EP was a new Adams/Vallance composition they wrote specifically for Rosetta Stone called Straight From the Heart.  Their single version never made the charts, but when Adams recorded his own version in 1983, it was HUGE, but of course you didn't need me to tell you that lol

Knots Landing star Lisa Hartman also recorded a version of Hidin' From Love in 1982.  Hers never charted, but it was a "Solid Gold" favourite!

Eight Seconds - Kiss you (when it's dangerous)

ROCK & HYDE The Payolas - Dirty Water

These ones are great.  Rock and Hyde were technically still The Payola$.  I think Bob Rock got jealous in 1985 when they were billed as Paul Hyde and the Payola$.  Both of those songs made the US charts as well, but fell outside of the US Top 40.

Eight Seconds had another hit in 1990 called Tell Diane, but it fell outside of the Canadian Top 40 (it peaked at #76).  Never has that mattered though.  I remember it well, but not as well as Kiss you (When It's Dangerous)

Rock and Hyde also hit the Top 40 again in Canada with I Will in 1987.

Those are both memorable.  Tiny Thing (featuring one of the best flute solos ever) made it to #47.  All the Tea in China made it to #93.  Strange since I remember the latter one more.

I have the Jenson Interceptor album from 1980.  They had another hit called Heavenly Angels that made it #87

Of all the hits that Susan Jacks had (even with the Poppy Family), I still think All the Tea in China was her best ever.  Second would be a 1981 hit she had called Evergreen ...

She had a few hits in Canada between 1978-1996.  The one I know her best for was 1981's Never Get to Heaven (which was co-written with Bryan Adams), but she is also well-known in Canada for the 1978 hit Pretty Girls (which became a Top 40 hit for Melissa Manchester in 1979), the 1984 hit Gonna Get Close to You, the 1987 hit Tango and the 1989 hit Talk to Me

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iER4cAufTa0

She also appears as a backing vocalist on the 1980 Boz Scaggs hit Miss Sun, the 1986 John Taylor hit I Do What I Do and as one of the featured performers on the all-Canadian artist 1985 charity single Tears Are Not Enough by Northern Lights (which appears on the historic We Are the World album) (She appears at 2:48 in the video)

Here's one from 1985.  It never charted in the mainstream, but did reach #20 on the Canadian Adult Contemporary chart.  I still hear this on my local radio station quite often!

Strange Advance - The Second That I Saw You (1985)

Here's one from 1983 that never charted.  It was heard on the radio quite a bit.  I have this on 45 and their EP on cassette ...

Minutes From Downtown - Wrapped in Velvet (1983)

Wow, I haven't heard "Wrapped in Velvet" is ages. It did get some radio play back then and I've got to say I'm surprised it didn't chart.

They also had another single called Heaven Stret from that same EP in 1983 that also fared well on the radio but never charted.

I too am surprised it as well as this one did not chart.  A great group that should have gone further.  Back in the early 80s, from November of 1980 - July of 1984 to be exact, the Canadian charts went from a Top 100 chart to a Top 50 chart, so I bet somewhere in what would have been the 51-100 positions, these songs would have been in there

Not sure if I have posted this one before:  Love in the Shadows was the title track and single from the 7th album by Dan Hill.  Released in 1983, it was the beginning of the comeback for him in the 80s, and though it never made the Top 40, it did reach #45 (becoming his 12th chart single in Canada).  More evidence that you don't have to be in the Top 40 to have a popular hit on radio.  Still love this one!

Here's one that did really well in Europe ...

Thor - Thunder on the Tundra (1984)

This made a minor dent in the UK Top 75 singles chart, and also made #1 on the UK rock chart in 1984.  Thor was formed in the mid 70s by former Mr. Canada and Vancouver born bodybuilding champion Jon Mikl Thor

Oddly enough, the only success Thor had in Canada was their 1977 debut album Keep the Dogs Away which peaked at #91 on the Canadian album chart in 1978

More metal from Canada.  Everyone says the 1984 smash Rock You was the best song by Helix, but I disagree.  That honour goes to the epic Heavy Metal Love from 1983.

Another great one was a 1985 cover of the Beatles classic With A Little Help From My Friends by a group called Kick Axe.  This one featured guest vocals from some of the bands colleagues in music and reached #79 in Canada in January of 1986.  Who were their friends?

Rik Emmett (Triumph), Alfie Zappacosta (Surrender), Lee Aaron and John Albani (Lee Aaron Project), Andy Curran (Coney Hatch), Sheron Alton and Brian Allen (Toronto), Cameron Hawkins (FM), Cindy Valentine, Ava Cherry, Bob Segarini and Paris

Love Aldo Nova!  He also had good success as a songwriter.  He wrote a song called Don't You Want My Love which became a huge International club hit in 1986 for an American singer named Nicole.  It appears on the soundtrack to the film Ruthless People which came out that same year

Here's one that never charted, but should have.  Country singer Anne Murray has a brother named Bruce.  He had a few hits in the late 70s and early 80s, but in 1984, his cover of the 1980 Bryan Adams hit Hiding From Love failed to impact the charts.  Kind of a shame as I really like this version, almost as much as the Rosetta Stone version (see below)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tr08r2egqU8

I couldn't find the Adams original on YouTube, but was able to locate a clip of it here for comparison.

But IMO, the greatest version of this song (which I believe I did post before) WAS the one by German group Rosetta Stone.  Their version (if I did my research correctly) was only a hit in Canada, where it made the Top 50.  If you ever saw the 1983 movie Class, the Rossetta Stone version can be heard in the scene where Andrew McCarthy first enters the bar where he meets Jacqueline Bisset

Another uncharted gem.  This one received TONS of radio play.  I still do not know how this one failed to chart in the mainstream.  Not found on YouTube, but I did locate it on Vimeo (a YouTube like site)

Ann Mortifee - Sadness of the Tribe (1984)
http://vimeo.com/59688065

Ann did chart in Canada with one song called Mystery that same year.  It reached #22 on the Canadian Adult Contemporary chart.  Not as well known as the former, but I remember it.  I never would have remembered these songs had I not found a copy of her Bright Encounters album on cassette many years ago.

Yep.  They were formed in 1976 by Ian Mitchell, a former (one time) guitarist with the Bay City Rollers

I'm compiling a complete list of every song by a Canadian artist that was a hit in Canada during the 80s.  Nice trip down memory lane as I found some songs I haven't listened to in a while ...

Harlequin - Take This Heart

Idle Eyes - All Day

Toronto - Even the Score

Here is a story song about a fictional murder and the hunt for the killer.  The video is like a mini motion picture, and the song itself is beautifully executed.  This is my favourite Canadian song of 1986 ..

I hear both those Coney Hatch and Zappacosta songs on the radio from time to time, which is more proof that the whole "It has to be in the Top 40 to be a hit" is bogus as neither of those songs charted in the Canadian Top 100.

Here's two non Top 40 hits from 1987 that had big airplay on the radio ...
