Subject: 80s Soundtrack hits

Written By: whistledog on 10/07/12 at 10:10 am

Also including songs that you didn't know were from motion pictures or even 80s movies that you did not know had soundtrack hits!  Here are 3 to start ...

Bryan Adams - Heaven
From his 1984 Reckless album, it was never a single until 1985.  It was originally recorded for the 1983 movie A Night in Heaven that no one saw

The Pretenders - Back on the Chain Gang
This was first released as a single in November 1982.  It's first album appearance was on the soundtrack to the Martin Scorsese 1983 film The King of Comedy which came out in February.  It then appeared on The Pretenders' 1984 album Learning to Crawl

Network - Back in America
This one was not a hit or (to my knowledge) a single, but it is worthy of a mention.  It is from the 1985 film National Lampoon's European Vacation that never had a soundtrack release.  Network was comprised of 2 former members of the early 80s group LeRoux whom you may remember for the 1981 hit Nobody Said it Was Easy (Lookin' For the Lights)

I will say my favorite soundtrack from the 80's was The Return of the Living Dead soundtrack.
It had a some songs made especially for the movie. Like 45 Grave's Party Time (Zombie version) which was a lot different than the original song as far as the lyrics went. It also just included some kick ass songs from bands (some famous, some never famous, but mostly punk) that were around at the time. We listen to the soundtrack to this day! In fact this time of the year is a perfect time to give it a listen!!

1. Surfin' Dead - The Cramps
2. Partytime (Zombie Version) - 45 Grave
3. Nothing For You - TSOL
4. Eyes Without A Face - The Flesheaters
5. Burn The Flames - Roky Erickson
6. Dead Beat Dance - The Damned
7. Take A Walk - Tall Boys
8. Love Under Will - The Jet Black Berries
9. Tonight (We'll Make Love Until We Die) - SSQ
10. Trash's Theme - SSQ

Breakfast Club- Right On Track (1987)

But that song was not from a movie?

Breakfast Club did have a soundtrack song though.  It was a cover of The Beatles 'Drive My Car' and is from the 1988 movie 'License to Drive'

Non-musical movies who's soundtracks were as much of a hit as the movies were:

-Flashdance
-Footloose
-Dirty Dancing (and even had a SECOND soundtrack album)
-Top Gun

Almost every song on these soundtracks were a hit.

Others that weren't quite as popular:

-Valley Girl
-The Breakfast Club
-St. Elmo's Fire (?)

I'm sure there are more but I can't think of them right now.

St. Elmo's Fire

That soundtrack to St. Elmo's Fire produced 3 singles.  The known ones were St. Elmo's Fire (Man in Motion) by John Parr and Love Theme From St. Elmo's Fire by David Foster.  I don't know if the 3rd single was released outside of Canada, but it earned major radio play in Canada.  It was called If I Turn You Away by a singer named Vikki Moss.
