Subject: New York City in 1987

Interesting how it's changed! It's much more gentrified now, back in 1987 a middle class person could actually afford to live there. I love how much character it had back then, even if it was more dangerous. The Manhattan of late 90s to present, is well, could kinda just be anywhere else.  :(

Why 1987?

Why 1987?

I was looking up videos of NYC from the 80s one time and came upon this one.

One time on a class trip, a friend of mine & I ate our lunch right where that was shot-that island in the middle of Times Square. Why? Why not.  ;D ;D ;D

Small world? Is the island still there do you think or has it been re-modeled and paved over?

Back in the 1980s, my first impressions of New York were Charles Bronson, the NY Giants, Run DMC, and Break Dancing lol.

I was just in New York back in 2011. Times Square is a lot BRIGHTER these days compared to that youtube video of 1987.

I find the advertisements in any Times Square video a great sampling of the current cultural trends. JVC and Maxwell were two leading manufacturers of VHS tapes, Panasonic had Camcorders, VCRs, and TVs, and Fuji Film was a nice brand of non-digital point and shoot cameras. Mita copiers reflects the growth of electronic printing from PC's. I see an ad for the then-new FOX network A Chorus Line was THE musical of the '80s in terms of popularity . Suntory Whisky was still there through the '90s after a brighter screen was installed. Then you have some advertisements that are still there (Canon, Coca-Cola) though much more simple in design compared to today's.

I've been to NY and Tokyo. I'd say Tokyo wins hands down for having the best advertisement to the masses. Every where you go in Tokyo, there are huge neon signs, gigantic LCD screens, and most importantly people ushering you in to buy things in their stores. Very impressive when I was there. They know customer service.

Are these traffic islands still there anyway? Times Square became a pedestrian zone not too long ago.

We didn't have Mac Taylor back then, but we did have Cagney & Lacey. And then they'd get hauled in front of Judge Harry Stone for sentencing, and serenading by Mel Torme!

I lived there then, well in Freshchester anyway, but we used to trip in to the city from time to time.  I lived there from late 87 til end of 88.  I also lived there from 79 - 82, another interested period.

Like, Hi, Fer Shurr,

If you were in NYC during 1988, and you watched "Oliver & Company" in a theatre, did Disney's ideas about the New York City of the late 1980s match up with your reality, or did you think that Disney was totally off, with regards to their portrayal of 1987/1988 New York City?

Funny, I don't see that much differences between the 1997 one and between my first visit to NYC in October 2006 (which would also fit to the 2nd video you have posted).

Yeah it seems like 1987 to 1997 is the biggest change.

Times Square's changed a lot in appearance but not really the city as a whole. I'm sure the social fabric has changed more than the appearance of things though.

And I actually think the change from 1997 to 2007 is fairly big in Times Square. In 1987 there wasn't as much neon but the cars and design of the signs in 1997 look a lot more old fashioned than the ones from '07.

Have you been to New York in real life? When I watch the 1997 video I am pretty much seeing the Times Square that I have seen in 2006 - unlike the 1987 one which is really really different from '97.

woww it does have that new yorker colour and vibe back in 1987, the late 90s - now is a different new york, an actual future city with like very high end cosmopolitan and sleek design since the late 90s... now I can't wait to see the 2017 New York Times square

Are you sure about that? 2017 is the year the Piano Man said that he'd...
"Seen The Lights Go Out On Broadway,
I watched the mighty skyline fall.
The boats were waiting at the Battery,
the union went on strike, the never sailed at all!"

Then again, it certainly feels like Hurricane Sandy made that happen!

I can't believe that 2017 is only 4 years away...
So I don't think it will be that much different. Just some slimmer iPads and advanced smartphones I guess.

Well 4 years can make a huge difference. Like 1989 to 1993 for example. I believe Internet will be more widely available everywhere and music will sound more futuristic with holographic pop stars and vocoloid singers.

I don't think 1989 and 1993 were really that different. I'd say 1963 vs. 1967 would be a much better example of a large 4 year difference.
