Subject: Uncharted in North America: Black Lace

Written By: whistledog on 06/05/13 at 10:40 am

Black Lace were/are a novelty act from the UK who performed novelty/party songs.  Initially a four piece, they went down to a duo in the 80s consisting of Colin Routh and Alan Barton.  They began their career placing 7th in the Eurovision Song contest in 1979 with Mary Ann

SINGLES:
1979 - Mary Ann
1983 - Superman (Gioca Jouer)
1984 - Agadoo
1985 - Do the Conga
1985 - El Vino Collapso
1985 - I Speaka Da Lingo
1985 - The Hokey Cokey
1986 - Viva La Mexico
1986 - Wig Wam Bam
1989 - I Am the Music Man
1990 - Gang Bang
1998 - Agadoo (new version)

The Hokey Cokey is a cover of the legendary party song of the same name, Wig Wam Bam is a cover of the 1972 Sweet song, and Agadoo is a cover of a 70s French song first made famous by Canadian singer Patrick Zabe.  Over the last few years, Canadians will recognize the melody of Agadoo used as the jingle in a popular commercial for Vanilla Mini-Wheats

Though Black Lace never had success in North America, Agadoo was spoofed in the 1986 UK #1 hit The Chicken Song by Spitting Image that reached #90 in Canada.

In 1984, Black Lace released an album titled Party Party.  I don't know if Black Lace had any physical releases in North America, but I have an album titled Party Party that does not have an artist tag.  It has a 1984 release year, and the exact same song listing as the Black Lace album, but the singers sound a bit different

Superman (Gioca Jouer) / Agadoo

Alan Barton (he on the left) eventually decided to add a modicum of respectability to his career by taking over lead vocal duties with Smokie (who were still a big draw in Europe) when Chris Norman called it a day...sadly, Alan lost his life when the tour bus crashed in Germany...

There was also a rather risque version of 'Superman' stuck on the back of one of their 12"s...a favourite with some DJ's, as I recall...

"Do The Conga" and "Agadoo" were big party favourites when I was a kid. Our family had both on vinyl.
