Subject: Adventure/Fantasy Movies

Written By: CatwomanofV on 07/01/13 at 6:19 pm

The 80s were full of Adventure/Fantasy movies. Some that I can think of off the top of head were:

-Conan movies
-Red Sonja
-Beastmaster
-Dragonslayer
-The Sword & The Sorcerer
-Ladyhawke

I sure there were more but I can't think of more off the top of my head. They don't seem to make them anymore today. Yeah, they were kind of cheesy but I kind of like them anyway.

I like all the ones that I listed but I think Ladyhawke is probably my favorite.

Did you like them and if so, which ones? And did I miss any?

Beastmaster was probably my favorite.
I saw that flick about a dozen times on HBO back in the 80s!!
Here's one some of you might remember The Barbarians starring the Barbarian Brothers! Was low budget, but I recall liking it a lot as a kid...

Last night after I turned off the computer, I remembered Willow.

I don't know if I would consider Goonies in this category. They weren't quite in a different place, a different time like all the others.

I just thought of a few more:

-Labyrinth
-The Last Unicorn
-Time Bandits
-The Dark Crystal
-Legend

The two Ewok movies (Caravan of Courage and Battle for Endor) and Masters of the Universe spring to mind, but they may be crossing into sci-fi territory. Still pretty fantasy-like.

I would like to see The Sword & The Sorcerer again. Another title I haven't seen since the 80's when I was a young lad.
I'm thinking that is the one where the dude has a massive 3 bladed sword?? I remember thinking it was outrageously cool as a kid. Probably cheezy today.

Anyone remember the animated film Fire & Ice from the 80's?

Was directed by Ralph Bakshi, who did many animated films in the 70's and 80's. Fritz the Cat, Heavy Traffic, and even The Lord of the Rings film.
Now that I think of it he had another fantasy film in the 80's. Wizards.

Don't forget "American Pop" (1981)

Here's another one in the adventure genre
The High Road to China (1983)

They originally wanted Tom Selleck to play Indiana Jones.  I'm sooooo glad they chose Harrison Ford instead!

No mentions yet of Return to Oz?

It was critically panned for deviating from the style and aesthetic of the original, but it did the original Baum novels justice. Always loved this film as a kid. I must have rented it it from our local video store dozens of times. Now I own it on DVD!
