Subject: Legends in Canadian Music: Streetheart

Written By: whistledog on 09/12/13 at 3:13 pm

In 1976, musicians Daryl Gutheil (Keyboards) and Ken "Spider" Sinnaeve (Bass) formed a group called Witness Incorporated.  With the addition of Kenny Shields (Voice), Paul Dean (Guitar) and Matt Frenette (Drums), they changed their name to Streetheart in 1977 and released their debut album Meanwhile Back in Paris ... in 1978.  Following its release, Dean left the group to work on a new project with Mike Reno, who was then a replacement singer for a popular Canadian band called Moxy

In 1979, Streetheart released their 2nd album Under Heaven, Over Hell and gave them their first chart single with Here Comes the Night.  Following this success, Frenette left the band to join Dean and Reno in what would become Loverboy.  In 1980, while Loverboy shopped for a record deal, the 2nd single from Under Heaven, Over Hell, a cover of the Rolling Stones song Under My Thumb hit the Canadian Top 20.  That same year, Loverboy landed a record deal and would go on to international success, something Streetheart never did in their career.

Replacements for Dean and Frenette came and went and in 1983 after 6 studio albums, Streetheart decided to call it quits.  Spider Sinnaeve went on to do session work before joining Tom Cochrane's band Red Rider, staying with them from 1986-1990, then through Cochrane's solo career from 1991 until 1998.  In 2001, he was asked to replace the late Scott Smith in Loverboy and is still with them today.  This means that 60% of Loverboy is comprised of original members of Streetheart

In 1999, Kenny Shields re-formed Streetheart with original founding member Daryl Gutheil and returning also is Jeff Neill (guitar) whose first appearance with the band was the self-titled 1982 album.  Though there has not been a new album from them, they still tour with the hits they had.  Throughout their career, they achieved 6 gold albums (4 of them eventually going Platinum), 1 gold single and a 1979 Juno Award, and are one of few bands that kept their same logo and featured it on all of their albums.  Today, they are often billed as Kenny Shields and Streetheart

THE HIT SINGLES ...

1979 | Here Comes the Night
1980 | Under My Thumb
1980 | Draggin' You Down
1982 | What Kind of Love is This?

Don't let the singles chart positions fool you.  Their songs were played on the radio quite a bit.  Here Comes the Night is still heard quite often on the local radio station I listen to.  They also had other singles that though never charted, were radio favourites.  Such songs include Tin Solder from 1981 and One More Time from 1982.  In the video (or promo clip as they were then called) for Under My Thumb (see below), Matt Frenette can be seen playing the drums, even though by the time that song had charted, he was no longer a band member

Streetheart was a decent Canadian band, probably most well known for their raunchy version of "Under my thumb", and it's quite a good cover of the Rolling Stones's song. I am surprised "here comes the night" only managed to reach #60 in the charts.  I'm familiar with all 4 youtube songs there.

A few of the bands songs did get a fair amount of radio play back in 1978-1983. It was a band that got some airplay on AM radio and FM radio. Toronto stations Q-107 and CHUM-FM had them on quite regularly during that time period.

I am surprised One More Time never even charted.  I remember that song well from radio.  I even have a K-Tel compilation from 1983 called Hit Explosion and it's on there

The only reason I can think of is that Streetheart was heard more on FM than AM. Didn't chart on AM but heard more on FM, like Helix or Coney Hatch and other bands from that era. Just a guess...

But I find it interesting that "One more time" got into a "Hit explosion" K-Tel album after not exploding into being hit. lol

That particular K-Tel album also had Words by Missing Persons, which was familiar on radio, but it also never charted.  Perhaps the album should have been called Radio Explosion lol

That's also not a big hit. I remember it. I don't think it even got as much radio time as the Streetheart song.

When I Was 15 my band did a cover of Streetheart's "One More Time." I swear to god I sounded like Kenny Shields.
