Subject: How popular was Magnum PI?

Written By: 90s Guy on 03/13/15 at 5:26 pm

I've been on a Magnum PI kick since it's on Netflix...I'm curious for people who were alive and old enough to remember the '80s...How popular was Magnum PI during it's eight year run (1980-1988)?

Ummm, extremely?  :D

Any show with an 8 season run speaks for itself. I think what set it apart from shows like A-Team and Airwolf is that Magnum also spoke to an older (and therefore wider) audience. Mums, Dads, kids - it was a pretty universal show. MacGyver pretty much reached the same audience.

Like many TV shows with such runs, they tend to often start moderately, build to a peak, and then fade away leading to cancellation. In Magnum, P.I.'s case, it started moderately popular being a Top 20 show in its first two seasons, but generally hitting its peak in 1983, with Season 3 being the #3 rated show and Season 4 being the #6 rated Neilsen show. It was just about as popular as Dallas, Dynasty, Simon & Simon, and the early run of The A-Team. By Season 6 though, Magnum, PI had fallen into the 30s, mostly due to the fact that it was scheduled against The Cosby Show and Family Ties by then. When it moved to Wednesdays in 1986, it was too late by then, as it was still competing against moderately popular Dynasty and the show had poor-lead ins. Of course this lead to an intended finale with Magnum's death only to use the dream plot as a bailout device.

That's interesting!  Women really liked Tom Selleck.

We have a couple of seasons on DVD. It was a very popular show.

It was on TV here in Germany and I watched a couple of episodes. I actually liked it but didn't watch many episodes as I wasn't much of a TV watcher.

Amadán means, as Gibbo correctly translated, 'idiot'. It is an Irish word, usually reserved for males. A female idiot would be 'oínseach'.

Go to the top of the class, Gibbo.

To answer your question, I can't speak for the character as I never watched the show (wouldn't have been allowed to even if I had wanted to actually) but he is. He thinks he's God's gift to women and also posed for pictures with his young daughter with her wearing a disguise such as a fake nose and comedy glasses and such. Berk!

Tom Selleck was to be the Indiana Jones, but thank goodness that Harrison Ford got the part.

Magnum PI was popular enough for this to be at Toys "R" Us in 1983:

It's not even on Ebay.  ;)

Women back then thought he was a hunk. Tall, hot and sexy with a hairy chest.

I've never considered him a hunk. He had facial hair for one thing.

I did earlier but all I saw was the Ferrari and Magnum set. Then, I checked again a few minutes ago and saw a loose Thomas Magnum action figure in good condition going for 500 dollars.

Here's the link:

So that turns you off?

Definitely. Although Australian actor Gerard Maguire isn't too bad looking and he also has a moustache.

I just prefer the clean shaven look, it's smarter.

I used to sport a mustache and goatee but then I just decided 11 years ago to just go clean shaven for good, no more facial hair.
