Subject: 1984: The Best '80s year

Written By: 90s Guy on 04/18/15 at 5:17 am

I would argue 1984 was the height of the '80s. A time before the hideously bad '80s trends came into being, a year which introduced some of the best movies of the decade and arguably the last year in the '80s in which movies were consistently good; Also, great music. Just as a sampler, here's what came out movie and music wise in 1984:

Music:

1984 - Van Halen
Bon Jovi - Bon Jovi
Run-D.M.C. - Run D.M.C.
Reckoning - R.E.M.
Grace Under Pressure - Rush
Ride the Lightning - Metallica
W.A.S.P. - W.A.S.P.
Powerslave - Iron Maiden

In film:

Ghostbusters
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
The Terminator
Gremlins
Karate Kid
Police Academy
Beverly Hills Cop
Purple Rain
Red Dawn
Revenge of the Nerds
Sixteen Candles
Splash

Video games:

Paperboy
King's Quest

I'd argue it's the 80s best year. What say you?

In my mind it's one of the best years for pop culture ever.

It goes along with 1956, 1964, 1967, and others. An iconic year.

1984 may have had the best collection of films in the one year although the best films of the 80's were scattered over other years (e.g 1985 Back To the Future, 1981 Raiders of the Lost Ark, 1982 ET etc).

I think 1983 was a more iconic year in music. The disco era melds into the new romantic music. 1985 was also bigger for music (in my opinion).

I think 1985 was the best year for movies of the entire decade! :) With 1982 at a CLOSE second! ;)

Nena was at number one with "99 Red Balloons".

She had a German version.
She had a hit with both versions, English and German.

I always thought that 1984 was the year that defined the 80's, and not just because that is the year I graduated. I agree that some of the best music and movies were from that year.

It seems like eons ago when Mark Holmes and Platinum Blonde were so popular but still what I would have done to be a fly on the wall when they were recording this album.

Is was a great year for game shows as well. The current iteration of Jeopardy! (RIP Alex Trebek) premiered, along with a TV version of the board game Scrabble, a refreshed version of Password Plus called Super Password, and the charades game Body Language. Press Your Luck's Michael Larson found a way to "beat the game" by memorizing all of its board patterns, while Wheel of Fortune pretty much became a household world to the point that Mick Jagger featured a single sleeve with the Wheel on it. You also had The $25,000 Pyramid and The Price Is Right continue to be as popular as ever. Even some of the short-lived ones like Trivia Trap and Hot Potato were fun to watch. Sadly, we lost Jack Berry that year after collapsing in Central Park, but Bill Cullen continued on with The Joker's Wild, and Tic Tac Dough with Wink Martindale was still alive. And of course the Olympics in Sarajevo and Los Angeles too.

It was such a cheery, optimistic year following the paranoia of the early '70s, the bitterness of the post-Vietnam/OPEC disco years, and the apathetic mood to start the '80s. The pulsating synth music promised a more interconnected world that would be more efficient and energetic.

For some reason I have the impression that it was a very bright and optimistic year! I'm not saying I'm right, it's just my impression!
