Subject: Did people have straight hair in the 80s?

Written By: 97er on 08/03/15 at 2:29 pm

What I mean by straight hair is no perms, no exaggerated volume, no tease, etc.

I was looking at my parents' old picture albums and it seems like EVERYONE had big hair and even if people didn't want to go fully big, it was at least teased a little.

While giant hair was a huge fad in the 1980s, there were still plenty of hairstyles from the decade that were straight and not all crimped, just look at some of these photos from popular media of the time:

If anything, the big, permed-up hair fad was alive and well deep into the 90s, at least for women.  Cases in point:

I didn't have 'big' or 'teased' hair, but I was in possession of a mullet at one stage...

Now I just wish I had hair!  :P

I think having straight hair in the 80s was the miniority at the time. Most people pretty much wanted to be like their celebrity idols.

I thought hairstyles were teased and permed with Aqua Net back in those days.

Yeah, but it was a minority back in the 80s when people had straight hair.

My pride and joy was a mop of dark brown curls and then puberty happened and it went wavy.  :)

Lots of people - men and women - wore straight hair in the 80's.  It wasn't frowned on or anything.  It just wasn't the "hot" fashion statement at that time.  But I will add, I seldom saw people wear their hair as "bone straight" as I see these days - there were no flat irons (  ;D ), plus it looked more seemly then to have at least a little shape and/or volume, even with straight styles.

True, but it seems total baldness for men wasn't that cool until early 1990's - it caught on slowly, for a little while, then it really took off sometime between the late 90's and early 00's.

Chris, the drummer, used setting lotion, Mark the bass player/singer, didn't used gel, and Sergio, the guitar player, I believe used mousse.

I think big hair was at its peak in the late eighties.

OT: It seems like generally odd/interesting clothing was more common than stereotypical pastel and neon. Is it just me?

I had straight hair in the 1980s. I still have straight hair now. In fact, I have always had straight hair and always will. Simply because I hate curly hair!

More recently, I have found another reason to hate curly hair - my worst enemy has it, although hers is natural.

1988 is the first time I remember my mom going to my head with a hot comb to straighten my natural 4C texture hair.Roughly the first 14 years of my life was a weekly visit with the hot comb and burns on my ears and neck.

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b191/guarinigirl2000/ospic2.jpg

Here's two sides of the same coin. This is me with my mother, Rita, the day of my kindergarten graduation in May, 1991. You can see my hair has been straightened and slicked into a side pony, while my mother wore her hair in a large, fluffy Jherri Curl--and it had been that since about 1984 and she kept it until about 2002. And you've seen my pictures, I prefer straight hair. (But if I could ever get big hair like Apollonia in Purple Rain, stand back!)

Not being still when she told me to. She and my hairdresser battled this for years until I switched to perms. But I quit with perms when I started dialysis. Every picture you see of me now, it's a wig. LOL. I don't mind admitting it. Because of vitamin issues because of dialysis my real hair just could handle the constant heat treatment and especially not the chemical straightener. But in the long run it saves me hundreds every year. LOL.

I'd say towards the mid-late 90s and then it somehow morphed into the S-curl. Here it is on singer Ginuwine:
