Subject: The difference between Jefferson Starship and Starship

Written By: Zelek2 on 02/22/16 at 5:16 pm

A lot of people don't realize this, but Jefferson Starship and Starship are two COMPLETELY different bands, not the same. The main difference is that Jefferson Starship rocks, whereas Starship sucks (in my opinion, no offence to those who like them). ;D

To be fair, Starship was "spun off" from Jefferson Starship.

It is actually the same band, technically speaking.  Paul Kanter (who passed away last month) took legal action against the remaining members in 1984 over the Jefferson Starship name.  He won, which led to the band being forced to drop the Jefferson prefix.

People only hate Starship because it is common in popular media to hate them  They had fun songs that I grew up with and I still listen to their songs.

I'm fine with people liking Starship, but to me, they seem like every 80s musical cliche rolled into one. :P

standing here beside you want so much to give you
this love in my heart that I'm feeling for you."----Nothing's gonna stop us now by Starship

We Built This City or Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now. They're both so good that I just don't know which one to pick! But I'll probably go with We Built This City due to how iconic it is. Forget Jefferson Airplane, Starship revolutionized music!

I'm most partial to the mid-70's Marty Balin era of Jefferson Starship.

Sure it might be light rock but it's also soulful and jazzy and I think Marty Balin has a fantastic voice.

It was on this day in 1975, that Jefferson Starship gave a free concert in New York's Central Park in front of 60,000 fans. The band and concert sponsor, WNEW-FM, were forced to pay $14,000 for cleaning up and damage done to the park after the event.

Written By: yelimsexa on 05/14/17 at 8:27 pm

As previously mentioned, Paul Kantner is the key difference, since he left the group right before it dropped the Jefferson in its name, and the '90s version as "Jefferson Starship: The Next Generation" also carried Kantner, and he was also one of the founding members of Jefferson Airplane.

The key to Starship is Mickey Thomas, since he has been touring since 1992 as "Starship featuring Mickey Thomas". He's  going on an '80s Rewind Tour this summer as a solo act with Naked Eyes, The Motels, Billy Ocean, and Taylor Dayne. As a result the promoters are billing Mickey as being part of Starship, despite joining the band in 1979 in the middle of the JS:TOB (the original band), but likely got that billing since his biggest hits came during that MTV-friendly phase. Interestingly, JS:TNG came after a brief, mostly reunited Jefferson Airplane during the final months of Starship.

Mostly, one was an early psychedelic rock band with a foundation in blues and folk, and the other was a purely pop band based on catchy tunes and heavy synthesizer.

I like both, and see them as the same.

But a lot of groups go through changes as members come and go.  Look at Pink Floyd pre and post Sid Barrett, Genesis pre-post the Peter Gabriel - Phil Collins changeover, the two that come most immediately to mind.  Both bands made large changes in their songs as one member left and another took over the "lead role".

And that can even happen without a name change.  Without knowing the band, listen to She Love You, Why Don't We Do It in the Road?, and The Long and Winding Road and try to imagine all 3 songs came in that order, in less than a decade.  All 3 very different from each other.
