Subject: The British Eighties

Great Britain churned out some great music in the 80s.
What are some of your favourite songs?

Remember Dead or Alive?  In the UK, they had far bigger success than North America saw which is a shame because we missed out on some good songs.  Here they are with one of my favourites ...

In 1981, 10cc released their 8th album titled Ten Out of 10.  Though it failed to chart in both the UK and the US, it was a surprise success in Canada where the album and single Don't Turn Me Away both reached the Top 40.  Every hear a song that is so relaxing, you could just listen to it all day?  This one is in my Top 10 favourites of the 80s ...

Sorry but gonna have to start with Five Star. I've tried to find a video I've not posted before lol. You could always count on them for good pop / soul music and a colourful 80s video to boot.

Good choices everyone!  I love Five Star a lot!

Here is one from 1989 by an indie pop group called Easterhouse.  They never reached the UK singles chart, but this one did make it to #82 on the US chart.  Not a big hit by any means, but still a hit, and a fantastically catchy one at that!

Back in the 80s, I was in love with Samantha Fox (who wasn't?).  As the 80s came to an end, so did her reign of hit singles.  Her last major hit came in 1989 with a cover of I Only Wanna Be With You that made the Top 40 in the UK, US and Canada.  Still my favourite song of hers!

Joe Jackson's 1982 album Night & Day produced a couple of big hits in the U.S.:

Speaking of alternate versions of songs, here's an interesting one.  'Pale Shelter' is a 1982 song by Tears for Fears that was released as their second single in the UK, however it failed to chart.  A new version was eventually released in 1983 and made the UK Top 5.

Though the song was not commercially released in America, their record label decided to release a special edit of the original 1982 version in Canada titled 'Pale Shelter (You Don't Give Me Love)' and not only did it reach #12, it was the 83rd best selling single that year in Canada.  I prefer the UK 1983 version myself only because it is the one most commonly heard here, even though it was not the version that was the hit here

I liked the English Beat in the early '80s - loved this song, though it flew under the radar:

Back in the 80s, I was in love with Samantha Fox (who wasn't?).

I wasn't! I'm female. I was in love with Tomas Ledin (and still am).

The best British single of the 1980s was 'The Living Years' by Mike and the Mechanics.

Most people know the song 'Family Man' by Hall and Oates, which was a smash hit in 1983, but the original version of Family Man was written and performed by Mike Oldfield (with vocals by Maggie Reilly) in 1982.  It was not a hit everywhere, and only reached #45 in the UK, but it made it to #29 in Canada and was such the hit here that when Hall and Oates decided to release their version, they did not release it here for fear it would not do well.

I do not believe Oldfield ever made a video for his, but damn that guitar solo.  I just love it so!
