Subject: Favorite 80's things

Written By: JordanK1982 on 12/04/16 at 6:23 am

What things do you like best from the 80's?  Music, movies, fashion, TV shows, whatever pops into your head.

I'll start. One thing I really like about the decade was the fashion. The freedom of expression that the 80's brought came out of nowhere and left us too soon. I love all the different styles and things people did with their clothes back then.

The military influenced look is something I really like. Doc Martens, buzz cuts, sleeveless shirts, bandanas and camouflage cargo pants.

Another look I like is the skater look. Had influences from the military look but overall it was a colorful mesh of many things from Punk to Heavy Metal to New Wave to Deathrock.

I like the baggy clothes and loose t-shirts that finally became more widespread during the 80's as opposed to the tighter clothes of the previous few decades. Growing up in the 90's we were always looking out for the right cuts. Loose and baggy; no tight sh!t. The 80's were sorta the same thing but very slightly less of the baggy and a lot more colors. With some slight adjustments, the way I dressed in 1995 I could dress in 1985 and probably fit in pretty well.

Yeah, they had it at the arcade! I used to play it with my brother all the time. And when my sister was old enough in the early 90's, all three of us would go down and spend 100's of dollars at the arcade playing all types of these games. :D

Some of my favorite albums of the 80's:

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/3d/Oingo_Boingo-Nothing_to_Fear.jpg

Aside from composing scores for his best buddy Tim Burton, Danny Elfman also played in Oingo Boingo back in the 80's. They're a really cool New Wave band. Nothing to Fear is probably my favorite of theirs with songs like Private Life, Grey Matter and Wild Sex. Really goofy and fun. They're even on the Weird Science soundtrack.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/9/9c/BadReligionSuffer.jpg/220px-BadReligionSuffer.jpghttps://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/c/cb/BadReligionNoControl.jpg/220px-BadReligionNoControl.jpg

Both these albums blew my mind at 14. I already knew about Stranger than Fiction and Recipe for Hate but it was Suffer and No Control that really hit me. Speedy 80's-styled LA Hardcore Punk done no better. I couldn't believe how fast Greg was singing on songs like Big Bang and Sometimes I Feel Like. The lyrics were also one of the bands strongest points with songs like Delirium of Disorder with it's powerful yet maybe even nihilistic tone and the sarcastic I Want to Conquer The World that criticizes both fake politicians and lazy slacktivists (Green Day, this one's for you).

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/07/BeastieBoysPaul'sBoutique.jpg

Most people usually give Licensed to Ill all the attention when it comes to 80's Beasties but it's Paul's Boutique that really showed what they could do. It has some of the coolest sampling (in songs like Car Thief, Hey Ladies and Shake Your Rump) and the best rhymes they ever spit (i.e. High Plains Drifter & Three Minute Rule). It's my favorite along with Check Your Head.

There were slacktivists in the '80s?  :(

I've only listened to AC/DC / U2 / Aerosmith. I should give some of these a listen, after I get through that '90s thread  ;D

I personally believe the whole crazy SJW slacktivist mindset go going in the 80's. I've seen a couple of fanzines that deal with the same stuff but it was a very underground fringe thing. Even other underground communities like the Punk, Metal and Alternative scenes didn't wanna deal with those people. Slacktivism wasn't as bad until the internet so it wasn't so bad in the 80's but people who walk the walk and don't talk the talk have always been common.

Still going through the songs I sent, eh? Well, here's more!! Just some songs off the albums I mentioned. Enjoy! ;)

Glad you liked 'em! That Beastie Boys songs is definitely one of their best. Paul's Boutique is crazily underrated. Such a shame, too, considering it's a complete masterpiece of rhyme and sampling. 8)

On the whole I think I prefer early 80s music most of all. The synthesizers sounded better and the songs had more of a "punk" edge to them, more guitar riffing.

The mid 80s are when the synths began sounding cheesier (apparently Yamaha was having trouble transitioning to digital at first), though there were still great songs from that time period.

To be honest, the early 80's are my least favorite part of the decade. Mid 1982-1990 is the best. Aside from some good hits and movies, the early part of the decade always seemed kinda bland to me. I like cheesy synths. :P

This song is so cheesy with it's synth and sax but I love it:

My oldest cousin had one of these illuminated mirrors late in the 80s I think 1987. I use to spend hours messing around with it and watching her put on her make up!

My favorite thing about the 80s, quite honestly, was the aesthetic of the Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Ironically, their 90s designs were much more 80s in their boxiness... go figure.

Other than that, my fondness for the 80s is pretty much limited to a select few films, if only because they represent sheer 80s-ness. The first two installments of Beverly Hills Cop, Cobra, Die Hard, etc. immediately come to mind.

I used to play Pac-Man almost all the time and spent loads of quarters on the arcade games.

Ok, if you were an 80s little girl like I was then you probably remember Shy Violet. She was the Violet of the color kids on the Rainbow Brite cartoon and dolls. She was MY FAVORITE of all the color kids. Sadly I did have a Shy Violet doll of my own, but lost it throughout the years :\'( She was so cute and purple! Lol.

I had developed an I need something to hold in my left hand and shake.  To this day, I have a piece of stretch magic in my hand that I usually shake when I'm not typing or something.

There are a LOT of things I love about the 80's.  New Wave music is at the very top of the list.  Saturday morning cartoons, John Hughes and Indiana Jones movies (plus many more, of course), the NBC Thursday night sitcoms, are a few other things.

Tough question. New Order and Depeche Mode are my two favorite bands, so I'll go with them, though of course they're no longer strictly New Wave (then again, what band really is?).  I'd also rank Duran Duran, The Human League, ABC, A Flock of Seagulls, Tears for Fears, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, Ultravox, and The Cure at the top of my New Wave rankings.
