Subject: Which birth years would have been best to experience the 80s?

The question is self explanatory.

To experience childhood: 1975-1976

To experience pop culture: 1965-1966

It depends. The '80s young adult experience, then around 1960. Teenage experience around 1970. Childhood experience around 1975-1977. I like 1965 for a mix of teenage and young adult experience.

1962 to have been the ultimate young adult during the 1980s (turn 21 in 1983 and 27 in 1989).

1970 to have been the ultimate 1980s teen (turn 13 in 1983 and 19 in 1989).

1978 to have been the ultimate 1980s kid (turn 5 in 1983 and 11 in 1989...peak childhood from 1983-1988).

Personally, I wish I was born in 1970.

Yeah 1970 is kinda cool, they got a taste of late childhood in the early '80s and were very young adults by 1989. They kinda got a little of everything actually. I guess you could say they truly "grew up" in the '80s more than anybody.

Yeah I think the early 60s would be the best age to go clubbing and vacationing in the 80s.

But wouldn't someone born in 1955 or 1956 be the prime age of young adult in the 80s because they graduated college in the late 70s?

I think 1959 borns because they turned 21 in 1980 (most of them started college in 1977) and turned 30 in 1989. They are bonafide adults of the '80s.

I'd say it's more '59 or '60 if you're talking lining up your 20s with the '80s, 1955 is still an '80s young adult too though were well into their 30s by 1989 so they're on the older side of '80s young adults. The median is probably like 1959. I guess 1959 really is the optimal '80s young adult turning 21 in 1980 exactly and 30 in 1989 like thereignman said.

What's considered a young adult?

To me, once you're 30, a person doesn't have to keep saying 'young adult' anymore, just simply 'adult'.

My mom was born in 1949 and likes some '80s and she was in her 30s. My dad is born in 1952 and also likes some '80s. It's more early-mid '80s for them though. They do know early '80s music pretty well though it seems. Yeah I guess questions like this sorta depend on the person. Being in your 30s (in your real prime) and being born in 1949 for example is actually pretty cool too I think.

I would have loved to have been born in 1976, to live in the 1980's as a child, then the 1990's as a teenager. That would have been bliss.  8)

Young adult is mainly your 20s, it can sorta overlap late teens and early 30s to an extent, but the focus is definitely the 20s.

Your 20s are your youngest adult years but I think the 30s when you've acquired some wisdom and are also still physically young and also decently established in your career are your true adult prime. Then again I'm talking from the perspective of a 30 year old. LOL.  ;D

Yeah she was 38, my dad is a bit younger he was 34. My dad's mom actually had her youngest kid at age 42. She was in her 30s when she had my dad. She was already 29 when she her oldest actually. My mom's parents were apparently around 40 when they had her, so they were born in like around 1908/1908. I never met them though.

Nice. You turned 20 in 1980 and turned 29 in 1989. You were pretty much a "prime" young adult of the 1980s.

I feel as though my parents were at the right age to have experienced the 80s. My Mum was born in 1964 and my Dad was born in 1967, so they were in their adolescence and young adulthood during the 80s. Even though, my Dad isn't too bothered about 80s culture and much prefers the 90s.

Someone born in 1949 was also 18-20 during the psychedelic Late 60s. :P

However, I personally wouldn't have liked to have been born in the Late 40s. The 50s-Early 60s don't appeal to me, so I wouldn't have liked to have experienced my childhood during those years.

Same here....I wouldn't want to have grown up in the 1950s and early 1960s. The oldest year I would want to be born is 1967 (however, 1970 is my ideal birth year, lol).

The '80s seems like a pretty good time to be a 30 something though doesn't it? The recovering economy and getting settled down at height of your career, and still being pretty young! You're still pretty young being in your 30s and can like some pop culture (the more mature aspects at least). Again think from an adult perspective! You guys keep talking about being freaking 10 years old LOL.  ;D

I guess it's because we're young guys (SharksFan99 turned 18 on March 13 and I don't turn 18 until July 13). However, I would've wanted to be a twenty something in the 1980s not 30s...that's "too mature" ;).

Yeah it's all perspective. I went through the same thing, I was attracted to some 35 year olds when I was 18 but thought they were "older" and all, and thought girls my age were the most attractive. Then 18 year old faces start looking like baby faces when you're 30 and 35 year old faces look so young still. And then 30 somethings and even 40 somethings become the peak of beauty to you. Yeah 35 is not "young adult" as in barely legal and all that but it's still very young in life definitely. It's very weird but that's how it is. I've only just barely started the aging process at 30 but that's how it is.

I can only imagine like a 75 year old thinking of those girls under 60 are such youngsters with baby faces, it's so true. I mean 55 is really such a kid compared to 75 tbh. Then the 95 year olds probably thinking the under 80 crowd is a bunch of youngsters, 75 is also a young kid compared to 95 definitely... Eventually we all run out of time obviously (there's not too many 115 year olds out there to compare to the 95 year olds) but this is basically how adulthood works in a nutshell.  ;D

Well being a '76er I was biased and voted for my birth year. I love the 80s I experienced, and had I been any older, I might not have had the same affinity to cartoons and toys like Thundercats, GI Joe etc. And kids tv like Punky Brewster, Whiz Kids, Cosby Show.

I have friends who are older and to them 80s music is Adam Ant and Duran Duran, whereas my 80s is more of the fun poppy stuff from 84-86... Five Star, Whitney, MJ etc.

So depending what you're into will determine what you vote for.

What's considered a young adult?

To me, once you're 30, a person doesn't have to keep saying 'young adult' anymore, just simply 'adult'.

and once you're in your 40's they say "sir" or "ma'am".

Nice. You turned 20 in 1980 and turned 29 in 1989. You were pretty much a "prime" young adult of the 1980s.

Time passes fast dude and ages you thought were so old as a kid you realize are you're still a young man or woman then. Yeah you're not a "kid" when you're 35 years old but you're still damn young tbh.  ;)

But when you reach your early to mid 40's people call you "sir" or mister".

A young adult is someone ages 18-29.

I've seen it being 18-25; however, it doesn't make sense because that term is actually a synonym for teenager, juvenile etc.

In one of my high school classes, all the other students and I were even called young adults.

I'm still in school, and none of my teachers call us young adults. They just say "We're all adults here."

Yeah when I was 18 I thought 30 was older and 40 was almost dead.
I felt that way as well, but not anymore. Besides, one can still be old and hot ;)

At 30 you're just entering your prime, trust me. Not that the teens and 20s aren't fun but 30s and 40s is still young too.
Think someone's one prime can be at any age. I mean, people have been creating themselves since they were adolescents.

Eventually we all run out of time obviously (there's not too many 115 year olds out there to compare to the 95 year olds) but this is basically how adulthood works in a nutshell.  ;D

Time passes fast dude and ages you thought were so old as a kid you realize are you're still a young man or woman then. Yeah you're not a "kid" when you're 35 years old but you're still damn young tbh.  ;)

I have had thoughts about the age thing for sometime after looking at many discussions about the topic, and it's definitely a relative thing personally; however, it's not relative objectively.

Yes, I know that you mentioned that the 30s (and even 40s) are still young; however, folks in those age ranges are not as young as those in their 20s physically, or even mentally.

However, one can absolutely still look good at those age ranges. :D ;)

As much as I adore 1980s culture, the experience of living through that decade would have been flat-out ruined for me personally by the homophobia and serious lack of visibility for lesbians. Therefore, I only would have wanted to live the 80s as part of my childhood, before being queer would've been a primary focus in my life. As a kid, I still would have been able to listen to and enjoy plenty of the music, movies, and television shows the decade produced while they were brand new. I may not have grown up with Pokemon or The Sims, but I at least would've had stuff like Jem, the NES, and Back to the Future to appreciate.

It's true. A person first gets their first date, at what age? 14, or 15. Perhaps I would have loved to have turned 15 in 1991, or something along those lines.

There were a fair number of big events for the LGBT community around 1993, like gay rights being a serious political topic for the first time, RuPaul releasing "Supermodel," Melissa Etheridge coming out of the closet (which bolstered her career success and made her one of the most successful female rock singers of the mid 90s), and the movie Philadelphia changing several people's understanding of the AIDS epidemic and its ties to the gay community. Unlike the 80s, the 90s had several movies and television episodes dedicate to LGBT issues and characters, and 1993 was about the time the gay rights movement finally picked up momentum once again.

He coined the term in either the late 40s or early 50s. I don't know what the expectancy was then but it is now around 80 years depending on the country wether it's a first or third world country. It think it was the same then as it is now. I know mid life starts at 40 and ends at 60 and from 60 on it's senior

It was around 70 at that time, so there's no way that a young adult was between 20-39. Besides, folks back then were much more mature compared to today. Currently according to him, that means middle age is probably about 30-40 years, and not 20 as it was believed to be.

Yeah, but that doesn't mean the expectancy has largely increased. Anyway, people may mature later these days; however, most are already sophisticated before reaching 30. Those who are childish are actually in the minority.

I know, I was playing about the maturity thing. But the thing that once constituted being consider "grown up" have definitely changed. It's common place for grown adults to be into comic books, video games, ect...things that used to be looked at as "too immature" for adults. People have their adult responsibilities with jobs, kids, marriage, yet still enjoy the things mentioned above, it's become the norm.

So you have people in their 30s and 60s left in the cusp. In your 30s you're just kinda adult not really young adult, but not middle aged yet either. In your 60s you're like older adult beyond middle age, but not really senior citizen yet either.

I agree with you.

Wow, you missed a bunch 'o years there...  ???

Saw The Cars, The Fixx, Wang Chung, Oingo Boingo, Psych Furs, Depeche Mode, Van Halen, Skinny Puppy, Ministry, ABC, Berlin, The Cure, Devo, Gary Numan, Front 242, INXS , Split Enz, Black Flag, PIL, Pet Shop Boys, Clan of Xymox, Flock of Seagulls, etc... live and I was born in '69!  I feel so freaking fortunate to have been a music nut and ALIVE during this time in music.  It was freaking AMAZING...

Lucky dude! So many good bands!!!!

I think between 1967 til around 1972 would be the prime time to be born if you really wanna experience the 80's.

I can't believe nobody has said 1987-1988 yet. Being an '80s teen or '80s kid is cool and everything, but being an '80s toddler was totally boss! 8)

How about 1993? I had an Atari and an NES and went to the arcade every other day in the summer!

Yeah, but did you listen to Huey Lewis and the News in your crib like true '80s toddlers did? If not, then you really missed out. Power of Love is great bottle drinking music!

It was nice to "relive" the era by trying that, but some of your friends would give you blind stars for not having a Nintendo 64, Playstation, or later a PS2 or XBOX. And "retro" video arcades really didn't become a thing until a few years into the 2000s, so it was predominantly 3D games, redemption games, and a few pinball machines that we'rent like the classic Alphanumeric machines with their own sound effects. To fully appreciate the '80s, you had to start out by feeling the '70s atmosphere (lack of electronics, "dinosaur" rock bands with a little punk later on, disco, a bad economy) so that you could be wowed when you first got that PC, video game console, cable TV package, VCR, new wave group, allowance from an improved economy, etc. so that you really felt like you were a real part of that decade. This explains why those born from the mid-'60s-early '70s had the best effect, since they missed out on the lingering '60s prosperity/atmosphere but felt happy for the first time with the '80s trends. Those born from the mid-70s-early '80s started out with the '80s atmosphere, but took it for granted and saw it evolve into the '90s feel before they were out of adolescence and some didn't like the changes as much as others, although they are still the best for the childhood trends of the decade. I'd say 1968 was pretty much the best (with 1969 a close second), since when the '80s ended, they were just graduating college and tackling on responsibilities. They also saw their favorite celebrities as either companions or big brothers/sisters as opposed to mamas/papas for those born in the later '70s/early '80s, so they can relate to them better.

I agree although young adult to me would be more 18 to 25. Late 20s you have more of an adult mentality where in your early 20s you still have some residual the "teen" midset.

I think that's a decade that would be best to experience as a young adult. At least that's what I'd want to do anyway. So that's why I went for 1965/1966 you'd be 18/17 by the time 1983 arrives! Which would be awesome for me as I love the mid part of the decade the most I think.
