IMO the second best year of the decade for movies (after 1984). There were some other fine films not listed here like Broadcast News, Empire of the Sun, Ironweed, and Moonstruck. However, there was a surplus of made-for-video films (the b-movies of the era) and Bill Cosby selling out on Leonard Part 6, the "Worst Picture" according to Razzies. While The Last Emperor won Best Picture (and eight other Oscars) as well as featured Talking Heads David Byrne on the soundtrack and is an important retrospective in Chinese history (shortly before it became the People's Republic), I prefer the more adventurous and fun films like La Bamba (whenver that one song that appears near the end plays on the radio, it always makes me cry), Dirty Dancing (so much better than that new remake), Spaceballs (still the best Star Wars-influenced film), Wall Street (a period piece done in the present), and Lethal Weapon (a fine take on urban gangs, along with a fine cast).

The Lost Boys is great! I saw it for the first time a few months back and was surprised that I ended up liking it as much as I did. RIP Corey Haim.

I voted for:

The Lost Boys
Planes, Trains And Automobiles
Predator
Lethal Weapon
The Princess Bride

I'd have loved to have found room to vote for Adventures In Babysitting, The Untouchables, and Robocop, though.

Seeing a list like that reminds me the movies of the 80's was equal to the music.
