Subject: Were people in the 80s exited for the year 2000?

Written By: temaichi on 08/17/17 at 10:14 am

Did people in the 80s realise that they were about to enter into a new millenium and was it exiting at the time or was it a small deal for you guys? What were your predictions for the year 2000 at the time. Let me know!  :)

Back in the 1980s as I can recall, people rarely talk about the 2000s, for it was too far ahead. The only time that era was mentioned was in context with Back To The Future.

I don't think anyone was exited about it until the late 90ies.
The year 2000 was still way too far away in the 80ies.

I'd have to say no.  The 2000s did have that futuristic mystique, but felt far away.  In the 1980s people were excited about the 1980s - or else upset about the 1980s.  It would be like someone being excited for 2030 today.  (I know 2030 isn't special, but in the 80s we just didn't care yet...)

Back in the eighties, we just worried about where the next money came from to pay the bills for the following day, with no consideration to 20 years time!

In the late '80s, people were by far more anticipating the '90s than they were for the 21st century at that point. Disney's Epcot Center had a posted for its park opening proclaiming "The 21st Century begins October 1982", meaning that it was by far still a vision of the future at that point, and although Century 21 Real Estate and the New York department store was around, it didn't have anything to really mean that a new era was soon at hand. I'd say around 1995 was when the excitement started to really build in earnest, especially with the sudden blossoming of the Internet. This is similar to being excited for summer in the late winter, and some people are, when in reality, most are much more willing to have spring first.

We were all looking forward to hoverboards, which have, as yet, never arrived!

I don't recall a lot of millennium fever in the 80s. There was more attention on another totemic year, 1984. Despite the fact that George Orwell's dystopian masterpiece was randomly named "1984"  when his publisher would not allow him to use his intended title "1948" (the year of publication), causing him to simply reverse the last two digits of the year, the year "1984" took on great symbolic significance from then on.  So there was a lot of "1984 is here" type coverage going on. At midnight on Dec 31, 1983 the New Year's Eve party I was at played David Bowie's "1984" from the classic "Diamond Dogs" album (released in 1974) which was largely based on Orwell's book. I suspect a lot of other parties and radio stations did the same thing.

Back in the 80s, my family and I didn't think about the year 2000. It was too far away into the future...But we were excited about the 90s! When I was in 4th grade, we even sang a song about it in school lol.

Back in 4th grade (1999-2000) my teacher told us about writing the date in the future. She said we would be writing the next years like this 20xx instead of this 19xx.

This is what Ebony magazine in August 1985 predicted that Michael Jackson would look like in the year 2000:http://www.verbicidemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/1985_predictions_what_Michael_Jackson_will_look_like_in_the_year_2000.jpg

It's safe to say that they were terribly wrong ;D.

Actually no. His vitiligo had already started but in 1985, he was still hiding it from the public.
