1989 is just untouchable. Back to the Future Part II is one of my all-time favourite films, but the year also produced other wonderfully entertaining flicks such as Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, The Little Mermaid, Tim Burton's Batman, Field of Dreams, Dead Poets Society, Henry V, and still several more beyond that. Even The Wizard, though technically not a good movie, was friggin' cool in the way it promoted Nintendo through a feature film, while Star Trek V: The Final Frontier is just amusing for its Shatnerized absurdity. Even though 1984 and 1985 are close seconds here, 1989 is definitely my favourite year ever for movies.

This was hard. But I'm going with 1985. There's a special place for 1985 in my heart<3 because that was the year I first went to the cinema for the very first time in my life!. I was just 5 years old, and I remember we watched The Goonies.

I absolutely agree.

I absolutely agree.

I love how your use of bolding says more specifically what you don't agree with than what you do. I take it you don't find much camp appeal in Star Trek V, nor do you think 1984 and 1985 are nearly as good for cinema as 1989 is? :P

Darnit, I was going to make a thread like this, oh well. I'll give my opinion, it's '85, and for two reasons; Back To The Future, and The Goonies.

Partially yes. I'm not a big fan of Star Trek (it's OK) but also you said "1984 and 1985 are close seconds here" but I personally like 1987 for movies more than 1984 and 1985. I still like '84 and '85 though.

My ranking for '80s movies by year:

1. 1989
2. 1987
3. 1985
4. 1984
5. 1988
6. 1986
7. 1982
8. 1983
9. 1980
10. 1981

1989 has a slight edge due to Bill and Ted being my favorite movie of all time. Really, 1982-1989 as a whole was just so rich with good movies that it's hard for me to pick a favorite. Off the top of my head: 89, 87, 84 and 82 stick out to me the most.

1980, even though it still reeked of the '70s. I'm partial to horror films and it was the strongest year by far.

The Empire Strikes Back, The Shining, Superman II (released in 1981 in the U.S.) Airplane, Raging Bull, The Elephant Man, Caddyshack, The Blues Brothers, Friday the 13th, Ordinary People, Maniac, My Bodyguard, Flash Gordon, Dressed to Kill, Altered States

Back To The Future was a great film.

1984, 1985, & 1989 were my all time favorite years for movies in the 80's as well :D!

If I had to choose, perhaps I'll go with 1984. That year produced nothing but stellar 80's classics like Indiana Jones: And The Temple of Doom, The Karate Kid, Gremlins, Ghostbusters, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Beverly Hills Cops, The Terminator, Footloose, Star Trek III, etc.

My overall ranking for films for the decade, from best to least:

1984
1987
1985
1980 (the best year of the horror/slasher genre and of course the best Star Wars film ever made)
1989
1982
1983
1988
1986 (the soundtracks were better than the films!)
1981 (The songs "Endless Love" and "Arthur" just describe this year- meh)

I can't decide.  1989 had a lot of god movies, and I'm tempted to vote for that year, but they don't have as many five star movies as some other years, like 1981 and 1982.  I'll have to abstain for now.
