Subject: Fads Before TMNT

Written By: naf140230 on 04/28/18 at 11:00 am

I saw this old forum: http://www.inthe00s.com/index.php?topic=46291.0

I was wondering. Were there any fads that came before Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?

How about Transformers, G.I. Joe, and Thundercats? They were popular during the Eighties, too.

I added the Transformers, but G.I. Joe and Thundercats were never that big.

One of the fads that inspired TMNT was ninjas. That was a big thing in the mid-80s.

G.I. Joe commercials were even around in Puerto Rico en Espanol by 1983. In addition to the toys, there was a popular cartoon as well. It was HUGE in the mid-80s. Thundercats was sort of moderate in popularity, sort of on the level of Strawberry Shortcake, Jem, Go Bots, and Voltron.

Other '80s not mentioned (pre-1988):

Aerobics (1981-1992 was its heyday, but still residually popular)
Breakdancing (1983-1985)
Madonna-type fashion (1985-1986)
Members Only Jackets (1982-1986)
Michael Jackson and the Moonwalk (1983-early 1985)
Roller Disco (transcends '70s/'80s like Star Wars)
Video Arcades and Atari (1979-1983)

Thundercats and GI Joe are my favourite cartoon and toyline from the 80s. They were massive! By the time TMNT came round in 1987, I was getting a bit old for cartoons and action figures, so that fad totally passed me by. Never watched the cartoon, films or bought the toys.

Some great additions to the fads... I loved Swatches (had at least 3 between 87 and 92), friendship bracelets, Bermuda shorts etc.

What about Panini sticker books? They were pretty popular from 83 onwards. I used to have the Dinosaur one and Thundercats.

G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero was never on the level of Masters of the Universe or Transformers, but it was more of a hit with boys than Thundercats was.

The big question is, where is that sticker album now?

Micronauts anyone?  Introduced in the mid/late 70's but they took me into the 80's as a kid.  Recently bought several NIB for my office display case...

1955: Davy Crockett. From what I understand, this was a craze on the same level as the Turtles in 1990, the Power Rangers in 1994, and Pokémon in 1999.

Okay, but wrong decade. This is about fads in the 1980s.

Baseball Cards: 1987-1993

My complete 1987 and 1988 Topps sets are only worth about $15 each unfortunately, or around two cents a card. Conversely, late 1950s complete sets were worth thousands back then.

Well, I found something that makes it seem that after Star Wars, first came He-Man, then Transformers, then The Real Ghostbusters, then Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, then Power Rangers, in terms of fads. Here it is: http://www.denofgeek.com/tv/20773/did-cartoons-reach-their-prime-in-the-1980s

I personally disagree about The Real Ghostbusters.

Not just baseball, but I think that sports cards in general were in around that time.

Meh, marginally popular AT BEST.  It was a fad.  A fad is a fad.  No more popular than the NEXT!  Can we move on from this OFFENSIVE post please??
