Subject: Most Boring Day of the Nineteen Eightees

Written By: wsmith4 on 09/10/18 at 12:05 pm

January 13 1987

Faked sick to stay home from school
Watched The Hogan Family, Our House, and a unicorn movie that will forever elude me
Took naps
Ate grilled cheese
WAS SO BORED I CRIED

What was YOUR most boring day?

There wasn't ever a boring day in the 1980s for me. Everyday was fun. :)

Really?  :o

The ‘90s were a breath of fresh air compared to the ‘80s for me.

The ‘80s were dry, whereas the early ‘90s were a lot livelier.

Agreed!

I thought the earliest months of each ‘80s year were pretty boring when I was growing up.

Things took off much faster in the first seven months of every year in the early 1990s (1990-1992).

In January of 1990, The Simpsons shirts were in stores. In the January of the following year, Hypercolor shirts were new to stores. Love See No Color shirts were released in the spring of ‘92.

The early ‘90s > 1980s

What was YOUR most boring day?
For starters, It was Tuesday, under the sign of Capricorn. The US president was Ronald Reagan (Republican). Famous people born on this day include Lee Seung-gi and Parker Croft. In that special week of January people in US were listening to Shake You Down by Gregory Abbott. In UK Reet Petite by Jackie Wilson was in the top 5 hits. Dead of Winter, directed by Arthur Penn, was one of the most viewed movies released in 1987 while Fatherhood by Bill Cosby was one of the best selling books. On TV people were watching Unnatural Causes. If you liked videogames you were probably playing Battleships (video game) or Deflektor.
But much more happened that day: find out below..

How could the '80s be boring?  ;) We faced an existential threat from the USSR during the waning days of the Cold War, and "The Day After" scared the crap out of a whole generation of kids. It terrified some twelve-year-olds so much that their hair turned prematurely gray. Nukes and mushroom clouds were staples of pop culture back then. You routinely saw them in several MTV videos. You would panic if you heard the emergency broadcast system or a severe storm siren at a weird time. "It's 12:27 PM, and there's not a cloud in the sky, so it can't be for a tornado!" There was never a dull moment when you lived close to an Air Force base.

What was your favorite part of the 1980s? The  very early ‘80s? Second part of the early ‘80s? Mid ‘80s? Late ‘80s?

Mid to late 80s!

The same for me.  :)

1986 was my favorite year.

The year of the mid ‘80s that ultimately set up the late ‘80s. It was an amazing year.

I miss those times.  :\'(

Those times were very different from now. There’s no way anyone could get away with wearing half of the clothes we wore back then today. Those light pastels of 1986 and 1987…  8-P

ALF was the Stranger Things of the late 1980s. The merchandise was at every department store from late ‘87 to mid ‘88.

It was pretty popular with early Xennials at the time. Then, ALF became too obnoxious in the fall of 1988 and the show lost a lot of viewers. The only people still watching were the same Xennials that had his merchandise.

I know where I was on that date, and it was not a boring day for me, I was meeting the in-laws at the opposite side of the world.

May of 1980? I don't think so, I would've started kindergarten September 1980.

I thought you might have started 1st grade then, given you turned 6 earlier in the year.

I remember that year I was left with a small patch without hair because of stupid me being 6 years old while My Mother was doing something I was playing with a pair of small scissors and gave myself a haircut and you can clearly see it in most of my photos. ::)

No one knew that at the time though. I wish it had returned for two more seasons. I would not have watched it on NBC, but I would have caught it in reruns on another channel.
