Subject: Scary Bad 80s Eye Shadow and Makeup

Written By: Retrolover on 08/02/19 at 4:57 pm

Name people who wore that awful 80s makeup and eyeshadow from 1982 or 1983 to 1989.

Here is my list:

Olivia Newton John  :o

Boy George

Katrina of Katrina and the Waves  :o

The dancing models/mannequins from Robert Palmer’s “Addicted to Love” music video

Tamara Faye Messner (Sorry, RIP)  :o

Joan Cusack in Working Girl (1988)  :o

Florence Griffith Joyner (RIP)  :o

No pictures please. The eyeshadow and makeup was scary when us, children of the 80s, witnessed it the first time around on Boomers and early Xers.

Here's my $0.02 -

The 1980s was the first decade where on-screen entertaining men first started wearing "girly" makeup in a big way.  Not only that, guys were coloring their hair, not discreetly - it was "in your face".  Maybe today that doesn't sound strange, but at that time it was eyebrow-raising.

(I will add, Boy George was not the rule, even then - he was the exception, over the top...)

I'll just toss in one more name: Adam Ant

Forgot all about Adam Ant.

I didn’t realize that Madonna and Cyndi Lauper were guilty of wearing that horrible eye shadow up to the brow also. Grace Jones did a few shoots with the eye shadow and heavy neon makeup and blush on as well.

The makeup looked okay on Alyssa Milano and Whitney Houston, though.

Actually the glam rock era of the early 70s ushered all that in. Marc Bolan of T. Rex was famous for his eye makeup. And frequently glitter on his face.  And suddenly all the male rock stars were wearing eye makeup. Of course Keith Richards from the Stones had been doing it for years as well. Then there was Alice Cooper and his particular brand of shock. And the New York Dolls. And "Rock and Roll Animal" era Lou Reed.  And Iggy Pop. And of course Bowie, but he's always been his own branch of the tree.

And even further back there was Little Richard who often boasted "I was wearing makeup in the 50s when it was considered sinful even for women to wear it!". But back then he was an exception to the rule.

There was definitely a Ziggy Stardust influence on ladies in the 80s.

It never scared me at all. My mom (and all of the adult women I grew up around) use to do their make up like that in the 80s. Heavy eye shadow, liner. It looked nice at the time, but it's out dated now.  ;D

A lot of the singers that included Whitney Houston, Madonna, Cyndi Lauper and Prince to name a few wore heavy eye shadow back in the 1980's. I could also name Sade and Dee Snider from Twisted Sister wore it too.

The 80s were the “art house” decade. Some might blame The Talking Heads for this and others could say Devo. Nonetheless, the 80s were perfect for people who appreciate the arts.

That awful eye shadow, blush, and face paint were also used to imitate Japanese people in the early to mid 80s. These come to mind for me:

Aneka in the “Japanese Boy” video

The women in “China Girl” music video by David Bowie

The Japanese women, lead singer, karate fighter, and background dancers in the “Karate Rap” music video

Duran Duran sometimes in their early music videos (“Hungry Like the Wolf”)

The woman in the music video to Alphaville’s “Big in Japan”

I didn’t mind it at the time either, but that’s because no one knew that late 60s would be back in vogue from 1990 to today. Say what you will, but 1989 was the best thing to happen to people in the 80s.

Punks in the 80s wore it, also. I don’t remember the scent of any of the makeups from the 80s, but it seemed more powdery than what you see in stores today.

It looked normal on celebrities of the time like Cyndi Lauper and Whitney Houston, but the average woman could not pull it off correctly.
