Subject: Eliminate One Thing from the 1980s

If you could erase one thing from the 1980s, what would it be? For me, it would either be the Think Big! store or high hair.

In retrospect, the 80s were the new 1950s. 80s nostalgia has been around since the 1990s and does not look to be slowing down. The Awesome 80s Prom Broadway show from 2004 failed to do what Grease did for the 1950s. The 1950s has more originality to them than the 1980s did. Our micro-generation loves 80s music and cartoons more than the fashion because it is upbeat and positive (who doesn’t want to be walking on sunshine)? The new clothes from the 1980s were too ugly and laughably bad to revisit in an unironic way.

Talk about Sunday afternoon movies and not even a good one. Almost made me not want to pick up Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade. The 1990 Coca Cola promotion for Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade on VHS and the reviews made me change my mind on Last Crusade.

- Police Academy sequels. The Police Academy movies were never as good as the 1984 classic and there were so many of them.
- The Influence MTV had on music in the mid to late 1980s. Everything became high production which had music fans missing music from the 50s, 60s, 70s, and early 80s.

Everyone has watched the Smurfs. It’s been a while since the Snorks were on Cartoon Network or Boomerang (clever name for channel). I’ve seen the Care Bears movies, but not the show. Most 30 minute toy commercials of the 80s were alike. Good versus evil alllllll ooooooof the time.

The idea for Garbage Pail Kids started with an unproduced Wacky Pack card. Topps figures they could take the idea much further by making a series of cards for the Garbage Pail Kids. My parents thought GPK were trashy cards that belonged in the hands of adults also. My poor micro-generation. First, Garbage Pail Kids, then Skateboard Smack Ups, and lastly Slap Wraps in 1990. :\'(

It is possible but unlikely that Rock Hudson would still be alive if there were no AIDS. He was born in 1925 which would have made him 95 years old here in 2020. Like I said, possible but unlikely. If he were alive he would be in the "some very old celebrities still alive" topic. ;)

A few years ago there was a very popular podcast that looked into the whole Richard Simmons mystery.

I'm not sure what conclusions they came to, as I have not heard it, but I definitely think he has something to hide, to have disappeared from the public this way. And I don't mean his sexuality which has always been an open secret.

He probably had enough of the public side of life?
If excellently made, I would like to watch it.

It's an audio podcast, not a video. Looks like it can be heard here:

Why would you say that? I had one and it was a Cadillac compared to Atari. And it would even play Atari cartridges.

Not all of the games were Donkey Kong, some were on the level of Atari games.

I agree many of the games were Atari level. That’s what you had for computing power at the time. But coleco had a steering wheel and gas pedal. And a controller keypad with overlays that operated multiple functions in the game like opening color coded doors. The controller itself even had 2 buttons where the Atari had 1. Not saying one is better than the other but the coleco certainly had its strong points.

At hair salons, but if girls really want to get the 80s look, all they have to do is get out of bed.

It doesn't have to be an 80s look. I use Aquanet even when I pull my hair back into a chignon. It holds fly aways in place really well.

Aqua Net is more associated with the 80s nowadays than the 50s and 60s when it was new.

Donald Trump.
Wow Cat I didnt realise he was even known back then!! (The first I saw him was on Home Alone II -- When did he become publicly known??)
If you could erase one thing from the 1980s, what would it be? For me, it would either be the Think Big! store or high hair.
I would eliminate digital from ever happening..... It ruined so much beautiful analogue stuff its not funny.....

Trump was known pretty much from the mid-80s onward. He was something of a "Paris Hilton" of the 80s, always being talked about as being as parties, clubs, events, etc. They used to write about him in "Spy" magazine, etc. A businessman, but also a socialite. That was the image back then. And generally he was always reported about in a favorable way. Keep in mind, this was the 80s, the era when greed was legitimized and all things material were considered good ("Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous"!). Trump embodied that and was a popular figure of the time.
