Here's a thread dedicated to one of favorite years, if not my favorite years of the 80's. It was fun year filled with great memories.

The year of the late 80s where we were all getting tired of the 80s and finally getting closer to the early 90s.

I loved "Our House" too. Thing is, I've never seen it since it's initial run, so have no idea how it holds up or really what the episodes were like. YouTube doesn't have much either.

As for Dino Riders, my dad bought me back the VHS. As always went crazy over them! I begged for the toys but never got them as they weren't sold where I was I don't think. Even wrote a letter to my sister abroad noting down which ones i wanted from the adverts on the vhs, but she didn't get me them either lol. Sad times.

Nobody’s Fool by Kenny Loggins. Was one of, if not the first, song I joined this board to ID on the early 2000s. Before the board reset in 2004.

Reminds me of one of the few l times we got to go to the Mackinac Bridge when I was a kid. That song along with Fortress Around Your Heart by Sting we’re playing as I watched the bridge out the back window until the highway curved and it disappeared from view and I was sad. So as an adult I go all the time (well not right now).

I associate that song with 1989 but that was when it was popular in the US, while in Europe it was out earlier. The interesting thing is their album was re-released in the US with the title "Girl You Know It's True", while their original release in Europe was titled "All Or Nothing".

Oh, you's be surprised what people get away with. The general public is generally dumb, unfortunately. I mean it even won a Grammy! Unti they were finally caught and the Grammy was revoked. What I didn't understand is why, at that point, they didn't just give the Grammy to the people that ACTUALLY sang the song. Then, of course, I realized that the real people singing were complicit in the subterfuge, making them part of the conspiracy. Disgraceful! Horrid! Another awful thing from the awful 80s. No soul.

Lip-syncing was very common in the 80s. No-one ever had to prove they could sing live back then. It was just a given.

Even on UK weekly chart show "Top of the Pops", no-one started singing live on the show until 1991 officially - and that was only acts who agreed.

And I quote from a news article...

"In 1991, however, the producers relaxed their rules on miming, allowing artists the option of singing live over a backing track instead. Yes, there had been live performances before – New Order were the first to go fully live when they sang Blue Monday in 1983 – but they were few and far between. And there was a good reason for that – they were usually rubbish".

So what would've happened if there was no lip-syncing? ???

I started 4th grade in fall of '88. It was one of my best school years. It just had a very good vibe. I remember being obsessed with geography after the cross country road trip with my family in the Summer of '88, especially the Colorado Rockies, Grand Canyon, and the California coast. I planned to take that same trip in the summer of 2020 to reenact the memory, but since it was 2020 so that didn't work out. Like most memories of my life, that road trip has a soundtrack to it that I will always associate with it when I hear those songs which include "Perfect World" by Huey Lewis and the News, "1-2-3" by Gloria Estefan, and "Don't Worry, Be Happy".

1988 was the year Leonard Cohen's now-classic "I'm Your Man" album was released, sparking off his spectacular comeback (actually more a return to the spotlight) which lasted the rest of his life.

This is one of the classic songs from it. It actually turned out to be a VERY prophetic song.

Here's my list of all the things I think 1988 is remembered for:

- Music: Rick Astley, George Michael, Billy Ocean, Tracy Chapman, "Don't Worry, Be Happy", Erasure, NWA, Guns N Roses, Poison, Bobby Brown
- Movies: Beetlejuice, Rain Man, Last Temptation of Christ, Big, Coming to America, Cocktail, Die Hard, Who Framed Roger Rabbit
- TV: The Wonder Years, Rosanne, Murphy Brown, 48 Hours, America's Most Wanted
- Mike Tyson (including the Nintendo game)
- Super Mario Bros. 2
- California Raisins
- Ernest
- The Elections between George Bush Sr. and Michael Dukakis (Bush's famous "read my lips" speech at the RNC)
- The summer Olympics in Seoul
- The winter Olympics in Calgary (particularly the Jamaican bobsledding team)
- The drought and the Yellowstone wildfires
- Pan Am plane crash in Scotland right before Christmas

That's all I can think of. Please feel free to add anything.

1988 was the last year that Palace Amusements in Asbury Park, New Jersey operated. The seaside resort was virtually dead for the next two decades, although its slowly starting its revival over the past decade. Still, for a resort that contained the world's longest-running Ferris wheel at the time it went dark, its just another one of the casualties that will make some recall their glory years. Its quite ironic since this closed a year after native Bruce Springsteen's "Tunnel of Love" album was released.

https://www.legendsofamerica.com/palace-amusements-asbury-park-nj/

But the less is said about the Baltimore Orioles and 1988, the better. They're nearly 1988 bad nowadays, but 2018 was their low point.

I never thought of it that way. Also Al Gore was the only other VP that ran for president since then. I always thought of the 2020 elections to be similar to 1992 in which the incumbent president did not get reelected, making Trump the first one termer since Bush Sr. I also thought the 2004 elections were similar to 1988 since it was a Bush vs. a Massachusetts Democrat, even though in 2004 Bush Jr. was the incumbent up for reelection. 2004 had other similarities to 1988 as well, such as "The Passion of the Christ" which was like "The Last Temptation of Christ". Also both years had movies about a royal prince coming to America and starting a romantic relationship with an everyday American woman, and about a 13 year old who wishes to be around 30 and it becomes true when they wake up. Also in 2004 Britney Spears covered a Bobby Brown song from 1988, right around the same time of year in October.

That is true. In fact, the calendar for 2020 was identical to that of 1992 (leap year starting on a Wednesday, making Leap Day on a Saturday).

I also thought the 2004 elections were similar to 1988 since it was a Bush vs. a Massachusetts Democrat, even though in 2004 Bush Jr. was the incumbent up for reelection.

I had not realized that. Thanks for pointing it out! Yep, Mike Dukakis was from Massachusetts, as was John Kerry when he ran 16 years later. (Not only that, Daddy Bush was born in Massachusetts.)

Interesting, I had not realized that either. And you're right about Britney covering Bobby Brown's "My Prerogative"; I remember that.
