Subject: Colorful lamps/decor from the 80s

Written By: violet_shy on 05/19/20 at 5:16 pm

I was just remembering a very elaborate lamp like centerpiece that my aunt use to have in her living room. This was in 1988/1989. The best I can describe it is it was like a centerpiece, and it had many projecting stems that would light up and change colors. I guess it was made to resemble an artificial plant? Anyone know what they were called? I've been trying to remember what exactly they were, but I can't remember that much.  ???

Yes we had loads too. Big fan ones and then smaller ones interspersed with fake flowers etc. I used to love sneakily breaking bits off lol. They're called fibre optic lamps.

Ooo thank you! Now I can search for the one my aunt had. And thanks for posting the photo, I hadn't seen one in 32 years!

While we are on the topic of era-specific lamps, it made me think of a certain style of inexpensive lamp from the 60s and early 70s. I'm not sure what they were called, but possibly "rotation lamps". The shades were two plastic cylinders (one fit inside the other) both hooked onto a bulb,, and the heat from the bulb made each cylinder spin (both spun in the opposite direction of each other, I'm sure there must have been some basic scientific principal to this)) which cast a faux-psychedelic kind of effect. The shades came in many colors and patterns. Head shops and such places sold them. These were good while listening to music.

Is this what you're referring to?

No. The ones I'm talking about have two rotating shades, one inside the other. Look at the picture I posted. The one you posted looks like only the inside rotates, if that. The inside looks like it's clamped down by a little fixture.

I had and loved this one in my bedroom in the late '80s:

In the 80s, when I was 7 or 8 my oldest cousin had a mirror like this one. She would allow me to watch her put on her make up using this mirror. The lights would turn into different lighting colors and shades.

Hmm, well I remember my neighbour and my grandparents buying them in the seventies. One was a lava lamp and the other had glitter or tinsel bits inside
