Subject: 80s songs that were covers of songs before the 80s

Here is one that many do not know is a cover song, but mostly due to the original being only a hit in Canada …

I can probably think of several songs that fit this category.

For example, Kim Wilde's rendition of "You Keep Me Hangin' On" (1986/87) is a cover song. It was originally performed by The Supremes in 1966 and covered the following year by Vanilla Fudge.

Not going to post any Youtube links because three of them exceeds the recommended capacity of two as implemented by our LMs.

Speaking of The Supremes, their 1966 hit "You Can't Hurry Love" (released as a single right before "You Keep Me Hangin' On") was covered by Phil Collins as a solo artist in 1982.

(Didn't we already have a topic for this?  I vaguely remember posting a whole list of 60s/70s songs that were covered in the 80s.  Or maybe it was part of another topic like 60s nostalgia in the 80s or something like that?)

Anyway,

Little Eva - "The Locomotion" (1962) covered by Kylie Minogue (1987) (also famously covered by Grand Funk Railroad in 1974)

eKpVQm41f8Y

POWsFzSFLCE

Another one is "I Fought the Law" by the Crickets (1960).  It was famously covered by the Bobby Fuller Four in 1965 and by The Clash in 1979.  However, there've been many other covers, including one by The Dead Kennedys in 1986 and Richard Clapton in 1982.

I recall my list included some other 60s songs that have already been mentioned in this topic: "I Think We're Alone Now", "You Can't Hurry Love", "Tainted Love".

In the 80s, there were a lot of covers of songs made famous by The Supremes, the most successful of which was either You can't hurry love by Phil Collins or the already mentioned You keep me hangin' on by Kim Wilde, but how about some you may not know about?

Here is an Ottawa based dance-pop group called One to One with a cover of Love child.  This peaked at #42 in Canada during 1989.  Next to it is the 1968 original by Diana Ross and the Supremes

Here is a Toronto based singer named Eria Faachin.  In 1989, she peaked at #99 in Canada with I hear a symphony.  Despite the low chart placing, I can tell you this was well played and well loved.  It's so good!  Next to it, is The Supremes' original from 1965 to compare

Here is British singer Shakin' Stevens with Come see about me which peaked at UK #24 in 1987.  Next to it is the 1964 Supremes original.  On an interesting note, while Stevens version never charted in North America, it peaked higher in the UK than Supremes, whose original only reached UK #27

"People Are Strange" by Echo & The Bunnymen (1987) also comes to mind. The original was by The Doors in 1967.

One notable difference between the cover and the original is the instrumental break. In the cover, it's a completely different arrangement, and longer too. In fact, Echo & Bunnymen's version was produced by Ray Manzarek, who was a member of The Doors!

"A Hazy Shade Of Winter" by the Bangles, from 1987, is a cover of a song that was originally performed by Simon & Garfunkel in 1966.

"It's Gonna Take A Miracle" by Deniece Williams, from 1982, is a cover of a song originally performed by The Royalettes in 1965. (It had originally been intended for Little Anthony & The Imperials, but they never recorded it due to a royalty dispute with the song's writers/label owners Teddy Randazzo and Don Costa at the group's record label, DCP (Don Costa Productions) Records.)

In 1985, the British group Bronski Beat had a massive hit in the UK with I Feel Love (Medley) featuring Marc Almond of Soft Cell.  It is a cover of the 1977 Donna Summer hit of the same name, also featuring lyrics from her 1975 hit Love to Love You Baby and includes elements from the 1961 UK #1 hit Johnny Remember Me by John Leyton.

There is an alternate version of the Bronski Beat version that doesn't have the Johnny Remember Me lyrics, which is actually the one I prefer only because I have no nostalgia for John Leyton as he was not popular in North America

Four years earlier, in 1982, they covered the Velvelettes' 1964 hit "He Was Really Sayin' Somethin'", although the cover version was retitled "Really Saying Something" (they dropped the phrase "He Was", and spelled out the apostrophized words), with native UK trio Fun Boy Three providing backing vocals.

I was watching a show that had the best selling U.K. singles for 1983 chart run down and I was struck by how many were covers.

Tracy Ullman had a hit with They Don’t Know a cover of a Kirsty MacColl song originally released in 1979

Paul Young had two hits with cover versions. Love of the Common People was first released in 67 by The Four Preps, a version by Nicky Thomas reached number 9 in the U.K. charts in 1970, before Paul Young took it to number 2.

He also sang Wherever I Lay My Hat (That’s My Home), originally a B side to Marvin Gaye’s Too Busy Thinking ‘Bout My Baby

UB40 covered Red, Red Wine, a song originally written and performed by Neil Diamond

The Flying Lizards version was recorded using a small tape recorder in a room similar to what you see in the music video.  Production cost of the song was around $30.  Quite possibly the cheapest recorded song ever to become a Top 10 hit!

This one is actually from 1979, but it slid into 1980 for some countries.  This cover of Money (That's What I Want) by a British band called The Flying Lizards peaked at #5 in the UK during August of 1979, but it also peaked at #50 in the US during January of 1980 and #7 in Canada during April of 1980

The Flying Lizards version was recorded using a small tape recorder in a room similar to what you see in the music video.  Production cost of the song was around $30.  Quite possibly the cheapest recorded song ever to become a Top 10 hit!

Barrett Strong - Money (That's What I Want) (1959)

I do know the Flying Lizards' version, and the fact that it's on the cusp of decades. :) I also know that the Beatles recorded a cover version of it in the 1960s, and it has received some airplay (at least where I'm at).
