Subject: Great 80s Duets

Written By: whistledog on 05/24/21 at 1:47 pm

This was Johnny Gill's first entry in the US Hot 100 (and Stacy's 5th) where it peaked at #75 in 1984.

Stacy Lattisaw and Johnny Gill - Perfect Combination (1984)

-------------------------------------

This was the first solo single by April Wine lead singer Myles Goodwyn.  It is a cover of the 1971 hit by Lee Michaels.  What's great about this cover was Myles decided that the "she said" parts of the lyrics should be sung by a woman so he brought in heavy metal singer Lee Aaron to do just that and the end result was fantastic!  This reached #47 in Canada

"Islands in the Stream" is a song written and later recorded by the Bee Gees. It was sung by American country music artists Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton. It was released in August 1983 as the first single from Rogers's album Eyes That See in the Dark. Named after the Ernest Hemingway novel, it was originally written for Marvin Gaye in an R&B style, only later to be changed for the Kenny Rogers album.

The single release of this is only credited as performed by The Parachute Club, but it is still considered to be a duet.  Not sure why they did that because the appearance of Oates' name might have helped this song become a hit in the US.  He did promote it on MTV, but it never found an audience in America.  This reached #24 in Canada and the music video won the 1987 Juno Award (Canada's version of the Grammy) for Video of the Year

You must have read my mind because I was thinking of starting a thread about duets.

Yes, it peaked at US #1 on November 24.  Here in Canada, it peaked at #2 on December 29, 1979, however it was actually the 38th top single in the US and 58th top single in Canada of the year 1980, so it had a longer chart run in the 80s than the 70s.  It gets a pass!

Remember Dave Loggins and his 1974 hit Please Come to Boston?  He never was able to match the success his second cousin Kenny had, but he also was not a one hit wonder.  In 1983, he had a hit duet with Anne Murray that peaked at #79 in Canada and topped the country charts in both Canada and the USA

Not to be confused with American R&B singer Tracie Spencer

Originally a 1960 hit for Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs, this cover is by Italo Disco singers named David Marx and Tracy Spencer.  I don't know much about this duo or where this was a hit, but I sure do enjoy it quite much!

"Up Where We Belong" is a song written by Jack Nitzsche, Buffy Sainte-Marie and Will Jennings that was recorded by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes for the 1982 film An Officer and a Gentleman.

And it contains a misheard lyric...

This was the first English language hit for Celine Dion and peaked at #41 in Canada.  Interestingly enough, 2 years prior to this song, Celine did not know how to speak English, but learned in 2 months and as we all know, it didn't work out for her at all lol

David Grant and Jaki Graham are two R&B singers from the UK who had almost zero success in North America, but they were both quite popular in their native land as solo artists and came together twice in 1985 with a pair of really great songs, both which peaked in the UK Top 20.

This one was originally a hit for The (Detroit) Spinners in 1972 ...
