Subject: Brit Pop

Written By: Criz on 05/01/02 at 01:12 p.m.

Does anyone like Brit-pop, or any any indie music from the mid 90's? There is some stuff that I think is just fantastic - and I don't think anyone has mentioned this genre on the board. The first Oasis albums are pretty good, especially 'What's The Story, Morning Glory?' and a lot of Blur's stuff also. I quite like The Bluetones, Shed Seven, Suede, Ash, OSC, James and even some of the new indie bands, such as Travis and Stereophonics (to name but a few ;) ) Some of my favourite indie/brit pop songs are:

James - Sit Down
Pulp - Disco 2000
Shed Seven - On Standby
The Bluetones - Slight Return
Ash - Shining Light
Manic Street Preachers - Design For Life
OSC - Day We Caught The Train
Oasis - Don't Look Bank In Anger
Blur - Girls & Boys
Suede - Animal Nitrate

Anyone else into this kind of music?

I like two songs by Oasis, "Wonderwall" and "Champagne Supernova". I've heard of most of the groups you've mentioned, but I've never listened to them. Or I probably have, I just don't realize it. :)

IMHO, this is probably one of the best genres of the 90s! Too bad most of it, doesn't get played in the US anymore, but I love Oasis, Suede, and Rialto (they came out with a new album this year!). If these guys were played on the radio it would mean the end of Korn and Limp Bizkit's reign of terror on OC airwaves.

I own every Suede album and a bunch of singles from their Head Music release. Beautiful music, especially "Leaving," "Let Go," and "Heroine" (one of my all-time favourites!). Morrissey is excellent too - I'm still missing two of his albums (Southpaw Grammar and World Of Morrissey: though the reviews for them weren't quite so good :-/  ). Does Radiohead count as Britpop? I absolutely adore this band. Same as Suede: I own every album plus a bunch of singles that have some really cool B-sides...BTW, anyone hear of Travis's "Baby One More Time"? It just goes to show the song isn't to be taking lightly (just Britney...)

Haven't you heard, TB? The stations are trying to restore Metallica to the terror throne. ;)

I admit that I'm more of a fan of The Masses/Classes by MSP than anything else. I don't like D4L or IYTTY Children WBN as much. :-X

This doesn't count, but Kent, a band from Sweden, has a very cool Britpop sound - as long as you don't mind the language barrier (Swedish is like the Evil version of German!). They have released one or two albums in English. I HIGHLY recommend getting their 1998 (or is it 1997? Hmph!) album Isola (this one's available in English as well as Swedish) - especially if one happens to like Suede and James. Kind of a throwback to all the insipid pop and rock that they're known for (not that I mind it, though).

I'm just getting back into the Phonics having listened to their latest(?) choon (sic), Handbags and Gladrags. A VERY good musical offering.

I have 'Word Gets Around' and 'Performance and Cocktails'. I have to say, I'm not really into the phonics new stuff, its getting mellower and more placid and dreary. Favourites tracks being '1000' trees', 'Local Boy in the Photgraph' off first album and pretty much everything on 2nd album! :)

Manics - Interiors (.or indeed, most of Everything Must Go album)
Teenage Fanclub - The Concept is good (as any song that starts with the line "she wears denim wherever she goes/ says shes gonna buy some records by the Status Quo" should be, but anything from their later album "Grand Prix" is better
The Wildhearts - Sick of Drugs

never really got britpop though

My pick of the Brit-pop 90s bunch were 'Supergrass'... their debut rocked!! Anyone else like these lads??

Also 'Blur '(up until "Parklife" then it all went pear-shaped.
I also dug 'My Life Story', particularly the track "12 Reasons why I love her"...that drummin' violin riff kicked butt! Shame theyre no longer around...  :-/

That would be Supergrass' "Allright"? It's cool  ;D Their style seems to have gone a bit darker lately.

Britpop was the only thing that made the 90's any good!! My favourite groups from that era are:

- Radiohead (debatable as to whether they'd really be considered Britpop)
- Oasis
- Pulp
- Suede
- Blur
- Happy Mondays

Absolutely Vile

Pulp Disco 2000!!! Jarvis Cocker!!! Also the manic street preachers..one of the greatest bands ever, not sure if they are classed as 'brit pop' though..hey ho..
I think also Oasis and Blur deserve a mention...

After reading your list, Criz I didn't realise how many songs I liked from The Brit Pop era. Ocean Colour Scene, Bluetones, Blur and I liked a titchy bit of Oasis. 'Sit down' by James was his best song and I have not heard him better it IMO. 'Animal Nitrate' by Suede is a great hit (made in 1990 or thereabouts) but I didn't think much of Pulp.

Do you like the group 'Cast', Criz? They were pretty good with hits like 'Walk away' and 'Sandstorm'.

I love 'Laid'!! That and 'Tomorrow' are my favourites.

I'm not a huge Cast fan I have to say, although I do like 'Fine Time'

As for Supergrass, I only really like 'Moving' and 'Allright'

The first 2 'Phonics albums are fantastic, although now it's starting to go downhill for them. Travis are pretty cool still, like most of their singles.

The only Starsailor song I like is 'Poor Misguided Fool'.

Anyone into The Coral at the mo?
