Heh. As far as I'm informed, Matt Groening created the characters of Homer - named after his movie-making father, Marge - named after his mother Margaret, Bart - an anagram of Brat, named after and based on his childhood traits and the way he used to live his life at 10 years old, Lisa - named after his intelligent, musical younger sister, and Maggie, named after his younger sister Margaret Junior, in the 20 minutes waiting for late public transport in mid-late 86. The first short was shown on April 19th 1987, and was called Good Night. Written by Matt Groening, it shows Homer and Marge (as yet un-named) saying goodnight to the children, and going to sleep, and Bart trying to comprehend the inner workings of the human psyche.

Shorts included "No Burping", "Good Night", the two-episode epic  "Maggie In Peril" (don't worry, she is saved by helium balloons, if you haven't seen it already), and my favourite, "Bathtime", featuring Bart as Bart Simpseau, famous underwater explorer.

Don't know if this is the answer you wanted or not, but the first episode of the 30-minute Fox TV series as we know it aired on December 17, 1989, here in the U.S...

But as Screwball54 and Bobo both said, they did appear earlier in shorts on "The Tracey Ullman Show", starting in '87...
